“50th bday trip”
Reviewed February 12, 2014 via mobile

We had a wonderful time traveling with two other couples to the El Dorado Royale. The food was excellent. We never had a meal we didn't like. Portions were on the small side at dinner, so I would recommend getting an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. We ordered room service for breakfast and lunch and therefore maximized our pool time. We just brought lunch out to the pool and ate there. The food is just as good as you order in the restaurants. Utilize the beach butler as much as possible. He brought us plenty of water and drinks and a cooler for the beach.
We stayed in the Casitas and when we go back we will definitely stay in the Casitas again.
I recommend bringing lots of one's for tips. We had an excellent service during our stay. Another tip make your dining reservations early as the restaurants to fill up.

we too were on the same flight as becs x leeds and we were the stagglers, unfortunately my husbands case did not arrive and were asked to keep it to ourselves, this was the start of disaster's holiday. the hotel was fantastic and thomsons did wat they could , the case was put on the next flight from Manchester which was sat , still no case till Sunday afternoon only to find half the clothes were stolen. a trip to wall mart for some essential clothing took most of the day. getting back to the hotel we too had to que up for meals every evening , it took most of the evening to b served and eat. also had a bit of a time trying to get a bed on the beach as it was so hot by the pool.our room was lovely and the bes so comfortable we were going to upgrade when we arrived but was put off with everything hat went on with the case glad we didn't as it was much quieter down that end and out the way of everything, drinks were great and i loved the cocktails just so annoying over the case and the queuing at restaurants.

My wife and I stayed here for 10 days from 29 Jan
CONS
...Very long and frustrating wait at check-in:
Arriving after long flight and feeling exhausted it's the last thing anyone wants. Staff would not communicate with us and kept speaking to other staff via phone and walkie-talkie. We sat waiting in the lobby whilst everyone else had long since been taken to their rooms
Turned out we had been upgraded because it was my wife's birthday and an anniversary but
the room wasn't quite ready. All they needed to do was tell us and be up front about it!
....Waiting to be seated at restaurants:
Even when prebooked, the procedure to allocate you a table is very long winded and on the face of it overly complicated. It constantly causes long queues which seems ridiculous when you can plainly see lots of empty tables and busy staff setting up and clearing
Why not have some restaurants buffet styles?
.....Dress Code:
The seemingly arbitrary rule which allows some people to enter restaurants for their evening meal wearing trainers, shorts and baseball caps. There is a pretentiousness in the hotel's Dress Code and in the restaurants themselves
Maybe just insist on the dress code in certain restaurants?
PROS
Beautiful place and fantastic rooms
Very cheery staff, all very helpful
Shuttle carts are useful to get around
Great Food
Beach Butlers always on hand
Plenty of sun loungers and Bali beds

Some tips

....Tipping: We were told that tipping is the norm but we did not tip every time, mainly just those staff who had dealt with us regularly. ALL staff were very polite and friendly whether you
tipped or not. Truth is that some people think that tipping is an alternative to being polite or
civil to the staff
.....Use your Concierge: Every block has it's own concierge. They book the restaurants, advise and help with everything you need
.....The Naay Spa: They may keep trying to sell you a session but the couples massage was a fantastic, but pricey treat in lovely surroundings
.....Free shuttle to Playa del Carmen:
If you need a change of scenery take advantage of the hotel's shuttle into the resort. Mariachis, souvenir shops, bars and unpretentious but fantastic restaurants

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a Casitas - great room, location a bit far from main area but worth it!

After an excellent holiday last year to El Dorado Seaside Suites we were very excited to go with friends to the Royale, On arrival we were pleasantly surprised, the grounds are beautifully kept by hard working gardeners. The room was lovely, as before and one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in. It was annoying to be on the ground floor having lots of noisy people passing the room. The nightmare started in the evening, dressed up and looking forward to our Al a carte meal - if only we could get in to the restaurants! We tried to go early hoping to get in but there was always a queue, that didn't worry us too much, we could always have a drink while waiting.
Lots of people were really angry, how ridiculous, not being able to get in to the restaurants!
We were turned away from Jo Jo's one night and not offered to go on a list, then saw other people going in, it didn't take long to find out that if a 'member' turns up they go before non members. We were really annoyed, it didn't say in the First Choice brochure when they advertise the al a carte meals that you would struggle to get in most of them. We made reservations after a few days but that wasn't made easy, being told they would get back to you if any places were available, then to be told the only availability is in five days time. We were very embarrassed in front of our friends who we had persuaded to come with us especially for the meals. It ruined our holiday, we did complain mostly to be told they knew it was a problem! I would not recommend this hotel it is too stressful in the evenings. After complaining several times we were offered an 'upgrade' to another Hotel nearby, the Generation, which wasn't finished, work was still being carried out. The room was amazing, the pool a good size and the staff much more attentive. We did miss the walkways and gardens though at the Royale.
After all that I would like to mention a couple of staff who went out of their way to look after us, Maggie at the quiet pool in the Royale worked hard and always had a smile for you, nothing was too much trouble. Also Adrian at the Generation was incredible, we went to the reception a few times because things were not right, usually we were met with shrugged shoulders, listening but doing nothing. Adrian made us feel that it was important to help us and he did.
I would normally read reviews and think some people just like to moan, but there were lots of people complaining about the same thing,

Room Tip: I would choose a higher room so you don't get lots of noisy people passing. We had a swim up roo...

It is truly disheartening to hear that your stay was less than a 4-Diamond experience. I have sent you a private message in an effort to find out more specifically where the service breakdowns occurred and review your reservation. This is certainly not indicative of the quality service standards El Dorado Royale strives to provide.
Alternatively , Please feel free to contact our Head of Customer services at customerservices@karismamexico.com . We value your patronage and look forward to helping rectify this situation.

We spent a week there early Feb. 14' and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food is considered gourmet and I would whole heartedly agree and would have preferred a little less of that style for myself... but each to their own. Dinner you want to make reservations right when you arrive for each night if they are full; otherwise plan to wait or relocate. Breakfast and lunch tend to be the same foods over and over but still decent. Room service is great, but a larger selection would have been better. The accommodations were as expected, we were at the bottom of the barrel and there was absolutely nothing wrong with that. It was still more than we needed. Clean, beds were comfortable and fridge was stocked daily. We had bathrobes to use that we very comfy. We were on the 3rd floor with no elevators, so please note that if you need them they are not available. Service is exceptional, we had one night that was not but it was immediately taken care of... Jorge was our Concierge (Members/RCI) he was wonderful... truly appreciated him. The rest of the staff was great as well; the entertainment staff was great as well we did the bike tour and played volleyball both were great! With regards to the entertainment the movie that get's played every evening in my opinion is terrible. Please play a movie that is more upbeat, we are on vacation for crying out loud! There was two nights in a row they were either horror or some other sad drama. I think it kills the mood for fun; play something uplifting, Dirty Dancing, even Grease?? Just my opinion but I know a few others made the same comment, plus very few even watched due to the genre. The beach; well my only thing really keeping this from a 5 is the beach... I understand why its so rocky(due to a storm) but they are working on it. However, the trash and whatnot was terrible. I would have liked to see someone (staff) down at the beach a few times a day cleaning that up... I actually did a lot of cleaning of it while I was there, just cause I couldn't stand to see something so beautiful have all the trash. The Spa; we used this a lot, 4 days of spa treatments. The facility is nice but the pool jets could use some work... the treatments were wonderful and very relaxing. My only issue was that I requested a woman and had a man 3 of the 4 times; not that is a horrible thing just my preference. My husband always had the woman and even when we asked to switch they were clearly opposed to it; odd. I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday while I was there and they sure made it wonderful! Door banner on our room, a towel birthday cake on the bed with rose petals, a real cake in our room and a candle lit dinner on the beach... wonderful!!! Overall it is a wonderful resort with great food, drinks and entertainment and we do plan to visit again. Happy travels!

Room Tip: If you need the elevator request a first floor room... there are no elevators!

I traveled to El Dorado with my sister from Jan 26-Feb 3 2014 for a business trip. The drinks and food where pretty good, but there was no Buffets, only a la carte dinning! The lighting at night was poor,.. omg you could barely see where you're going, and it's a HUGE resort! Room service was * so so* Our room wasn't cleaned 2 days during the week. We were missing towels a few days and water almost every day, and we had no snacks all week in our fridge...our maid was busy drinking our beer instead!!! There was also to curtains or walls in the bathroom, everything was open concept, so we saw each other's butt all week! lol The beach in the Maya Rivera is not that great!! A lot of seaweed, rocks and fish everywhere..and not the *Finding Nemo* kind.,lol!! Staff was friendly, and entertainment at night was pretty good! :) We also noticed that there wasn't a lot of flowers (like in the Dominican) and some trees where dead..didn't have any sprinklers at night to water the vegetation!! Overall, it was a very quiet resort, never crowded cause it was so Big! We enjoyed our stay overall, but wouldn't rate it a 5 1/2 star, 4 diamond!!

We truly appreciate your honest and thorough feedback. It is great to hear your stay with us was overall an enjoyable one with the exception of the houskeeping inconsistencies. It is extremely concerning to learn of these experiences . We will be certain to share your valuable feedback with our head of Housekeeping as this is not the typical level of service we aim to provide. We genuinely hope you give us another opportunity to better serve you in the future.
