This is the second time I have stayed here. Really beautiful property with an all-inclusive reality but not at all an all-inclusive vibe. Fabulous! Very high end and we'll worth it. Gorgeous beach, many dining options and excellent entertainment. Fine dining at an all inclusive price.

Room Tip: Choose a room close to the water. Rooms close to lobby are a trek to the beach and hubbub with no...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

My wife and I just got back from a week at the El Dorado royale. We stayed from the 7th of December and returned on the 14th. From the very start Jan and I were impressed with well maintained grounds. The staff greeted us with a smile and a glass of Champaign. We arrived at 11:30 am and we were told our room would not be ready until 3 pm, but we were welcome to use the resort. Getting to your suitcase is not a problem so we changed into our summer gear. Flying from Toronto we really were not dressed for the heat!
When our room was ready a bell hop loaded us up in a golf cart and gave us a tour of the place before bringing us to our room. We had opted for a pool side view centrally located in the resort. We stayed in the 600 section that close to the lobby, spa, bar, pool, workout room, beach and several dinning areas.
Our room was large on the second floor, king size bed, small couch, table and two chairs, large shower, and a nice porch. The resort is about a mile in length which we loved, went for a morning and evening walk almost every day! The place is a bit spread out, but there are large 8 seating golf carts cruising all over the place to give you a ride.
The beach is made of white sand but a bit rough. There are plenty of beach chairs and small huts to get you out of the sun.
The Food at every place we ate Was good to very good depending where you ate. Out favorite restaurants were ,Fuentes (theater restaurant) , Santa Fe Grill, Kampai (Japanese's). For daytime Breakfast we liked Kampai, and lunch "Health bar" or Jo Jo'
The dress code during the day is very relaxed, men all you need is a tee shirt, shorts and sandals are fine. For the ladies a sun dress, or shorts and a cover top with sandals. Evening is a bit more restricted so I recommend you read up on there dress codes.
The bars are all stocked with a wide variety of liquor and tap or can beer. If you hang at the bar next to Jo Jo's say Hi to Elio (hope that's how you spell it!) alway greets you with a smile!
Just a little warning about the concierge, great people always willing to help in any way they can. The only down fall is the try to get you to go a tour of the resort and tell you how to become a club member, and it's "no cost". Well I had read other reviews warning of this so I did not get suckered in, Remember nothing is free in Mexico! What they are trying to do is sell you a vacation club membership, and they start out for around $4000.00 dollars. The only plus is if you go they will set you up for a free massage or a romantic candle light dinner on the beach. They both sell for around $ 125.00 +
I guess I will end this by giving special thanks to all the staff, everyone of you were fantastic!

An extra, extra thank you goes out to;

Sammy our sever @ Jo Jo's and concota

My wife and I were married here and then experience was incredible, minus a few hiccups along the way. I'll start with the hiccups. We had booked through destinationwedding.com, which we would never do again, and we'd booked our travel to and from the airport through Lomas travel which we'll never do again. Jackie from Lomas travel was an incredible pain and ignorant to deal with. After not getting the answers that "She needed" from the wedding party, she continued to annoy the guests with similar questions. We had booked a trip out in town to see some ruins and go to a cenote and Lomas travel confronted us in the lobby of the hotel while everyone was getting ready to go, in front of everyone, and tried to get more information why we didn't want to book through them and why another tour group was there for us. It helps when the travel agency is there for you and not for their own need. Lomas travel made it clear that they don't care what we wanted and that we "needed" to help them. Steer clear of Jackie and Lomas travel.

On to the good stuff. We were greeted by the wedding coordinators and staff and they were all marvelous. Patti, Urania, Maritza (sorry for the spelling) and 1 name has slipped my memory, were all AMAZING. That team of women worked so hard for us it was incredible. They were at our beckon call whenever we needed them and they just did an amazing job getting us to our goal of getting married and being happy getting to that goal.

Our initial room was too small for my wife to get ready with a bunch of girls and a photographer around her so they upgraded us to the Casitas. The upgrade was amazing. We were on the second floor with an outdoor pool and outdoor bed just in case you wanted to sleep out there. An outdoor shower that had no roof and was free to the outside, an indoor shower with a ridiculously awesome rain head and a Jaccuzi tub inside the room. We were greeted with a bottle of champagne in our first room and then another bottle when we had moved rooms. They were very easy and free flowing when it came to the booze.

The restaurants are all fun and exciting. Rincon Mexicano was great for breakfast and dinner. D'Italia was a nice dinner experience. And The pizzeria and Joe Joe's was great for lunch and a quick bite to eat. There was always a place to grab a drink (alcoholic and non) and I used the healthbar(purely non alcoholic smoothies and health drinks) after every time I went to the gym.

Sarani was our photographer for the wedding who did a great job keeping us moving and in the right place when we needed to be. The wedding coordinators were with us the entire time making sure everything was going smoothly and how we wanted it to. As a matter of fact Maritza was with us until 10:30pm and she had another wedding to start the next early morning.

Checking out was a little bit of a hassle. Carolina at the front desk was less than charming and I felt like I was bothering her asking to check out of our room a little early. She made no mention that I would also have to check out of the Casitas before I left. I later found that out right before rushing to our car.

Overall the experience and the wedding was awesome. The wedding coordinators did their very best to make sure that we got what we were looking for and that it was done smoothly and not seen by our guests. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others. But remember, Lomas travel and Destination weddings made the trip less enjoyable and actually more difficult.

Room Tip: The premium selection of the resort is very nice and the views of the ocean, though impeded by palm...

We have stayed at quite a number of All Inclusive hotels in the Caribbean but this has to be the best and will be a hard act to follow. The restaurants are all very good and the food excellent. The staff are all very friendly and well trained and always have a ready smile. We enjoyed the experience of Mexico. Visits to Chinchin Itza and Tulum are definately to be recommended Although both are Mayan ruins, they are very different and the beach and sea at Tulum are great. We would like to thank all the staff for making our visit to the El Dorado so enjoyable and really enjoyed our tour of the Greenhouses with Luiz, who also works hard in other areas. Zuly was also very helpful. Ana kept our lovely spacious room immaculate. We have only just returned and wish we were back there!! Go, you won't be disappointed.

Karisma certainly knows what they are doing! My husband and I have been to about 15 all-inclusive resorts (3 in Mexico) between the two of us and we would definitely visit another Karisma property.

The two major things that stood out to us were the incredible staff members and the delicious food. With the exception of one (who just seemed to be a bit cranky that day) every staff member was polite, welcoming, and accommodating. Each time we sat down in a restaurant, the waiter introduced himself and stated that he would have the pleasure of serving us. The staff seemed truly happy to be doing their jobs and everyone greeted us as we walked by. Karisma must have quite a training program.

The food was probably the best food that I have ever had at an all inclusive. Yes, the portions were on the smaller side (with the exception of Santa Fe Grill) but we just ordered an extra appetizer at each meal. What impressed me was that at EVERY meal, the hostesses asked if we have any food allergies. Gluten-free bread was also offered at most of the restaurants. I also noticed that (besides the Italian restaurants) most dishes were served with veggies, rice, or potato (no gluten). People with food allergies and dietary restrictions would have no problem eating at this resort. We also enjoyed the 24 hour room service.

Some of our favorites were Rincon Mexican for Breakfast, Jojo's or La Isla for lunch, and Kampai for dinner.

Karisma also has its own green house where they grow much of the food they serve. I appreciated their focus on sustainability and concern for the environment.

Another plus- I enjoyed having the concierge close to our room. The property is huge so going to the front desk to make reservations, book a seat on the shuttle to Playa del Carmen, or informing them about an issue with the room can be annoying and time consuming. Having the concierge right there to take care of everything was wonderful.

The property is HUGE. There are numerous pools (some not on the map) and more than enough bars. Go explore! The grounds are beautiful and meticulously groomed.

Room: We were upgraded to the jacuzzi luxury suite. The room was very nice, but our jacuzzi didn't work well, so I would have been fine without it. There is NO privacy in this level of room. There is only glass that separates the bedroom from bathroom. Yes there are partial doors to the shower and toilet, but be prepared to hear and see everything. I rated the room as 'average' because over the course of our stay, our phone, remote control, and jacuzzi had to be reported as not working.

Beach: If you want to spend the whole vacation in the ocean, you may want to choose another resort. You can swim, but the sandbags and coral will definitely get in your way. I would recommend bringing water shoes. Some days, the tide was too rough to go in.

Nightlife- the evening entertainment is pretty decent, but once that's over, there is nothing to do but drink at the bar. I wish there was a disco as it would have been nice to go dancing. We enjoyed Karaoke and the Michael Jackson show.

My one complaint would have to be about the massage cancellation policy. The spa staff circles the beach and pool to book massages. They can be very convincing, even though I found the services to be more expensive than other resorts. However, if you cancel with less than 6 hours, be prepared to pay 50% of the service! Insane. Side note: my husband raved about his deep tissue massage by Kia.

Overall, I would recommend this resort to couples looking for a relaxing, fun vacation. We certainly relaxed but also enjoyed going to the gym, running along the ocean, renting bicycles, going on our own bar crawl, playing beach volleyball, spending the night in Playa del Carmen and meeting others. We are looking into our next vacation at one of the other Karisma resorts.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 4400 building and were very pleased with the location. Very quiet.

This review my seem a bit one sided, thats because i have never ever wanted to leave a resort, while on holiday. We travelled with Thomson on 28 November 2013 and went extra leg room. This was by the toilets and i would recommend you sit in row 30, DEF. This will avoid people standing in front of you all through your flight.
This was our first time in Mexico and the airport was a nightmare, 2 1/2 hrs to get through customs etc.
Then we got to our coach and the holiday started! The Thomson rep was a hoot on the coach and the fun and friendliness of the Mexican people was outstanding. It was 30 minute transfer on the coach and the hotel was superb. The food was the best i have ever eaten in a resort, all inclusive gourmet cuisine, asian, italian, grill, author food (chef cooks and you wine taste). All premium drinks, i drank Bombay gin, JD, Grey Goose vodka etc. Room service was all included. The staff were outstanding, Peter in la cabana, esperanza/daniela in Cocatal and Alfonso in d'italia. The place was spotless, the weather good, entertainment was fun and all nations got on well together.
Room was excellent, block 10, away from all the noise
only complaint was wifi was $104 for 2 weeks. But Thomson are looking to have this included in packages in the future.
Would i recommend this hotel? Yes, would i go back? Yes
If you read bad reviews, i having been would take any notice
Well done the el dorado royale, see you next year :)

Stayed at this hotel in October. The staff and grounds are amazing, they do their best to fill any request. Food was really good and we particularly enjoyed the culinary theatre and Santa Fe, especially the waiters singing happy birthday! There was a problem with our room and we ended up moving three times during our two week stay which was not enjoyable. This was the third Karisma property we have stayed at, but no one informed us they have a scheme for returning guests until we met our second concierge who told us to contact the hotel should we decide to return. We are returning for christmas but contacting the hotel is proving to be a problem. I have emailed the hotel with a few questions, but received no reply, and after reading the latest reviews I am a little concerned. This is the first hotel we have ever visited twice.
