Celebrated our silver wedding anniversary and had a fabulous experience. It was our first time in Mexico and the service was second to none. Everywhere was so clean. The service was friendly but great and the food amazing. We were up-graded and really spoiled with lots of treats. It was the perfect way to celebrate. We definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting top class luxury

My partner and I spent 10 nights at the fab hotel early October. We were first put in room 5023 which was a big disappointment as this was in the un-refurbished block. There was a bit of a sea view but the room looked very tired with no decor. Being tired after a long flight we slept there the first night and then the next morning we went to reception and asked to be moved to a new re-furbished room. This was done without a fuss and at three o'clock we moved to our fab ground floor room 605. Although the room was not as big as others we stayed in Mexico (this was our fifth visit) the room was newly decorated, spotlessly cleaned, warm and welcoming with a very good bathroom and comfy beds. The room was well located as central to main pool with La Isla restaurant, easy walk to Jo Jo's, Cocotal and the beach.
As already mentioned by other reviewers the food was excellent in all restaurants although we preferred eating at Jo Jo's, La isla and Kampai these being open Mayan style buildings with no air con which I personally dislike. Cocotal for breakfast has a large selection buffet. When it comes to food and service you will not be disappointed by any of the restaurants and let face those who complain about portion sizes must be indeed very greedy. When you eat three meals a day believe me the portions are more than fine.
When in the hotel we spent everyday on the beach. After all why would you fly for 10 hours and spent your day around a noisy pool (young Americans tend to congregate round the swim up bars). The lovely sandy beach was never crowded and we found loungers under a palapa without any problems. One minor criticism was that the loungers compared to other Riviera Maya hotels were not the most comfortable. Saying that the beach was great and waiters/waitresses bringing you any drinks throughout the day. I was a bit apprehensive after reading negative comments about the 'plastic whale bags' put in the sea to help against beach erosion. Well these are now being colonised by sea weed/flora attracting fish and almost look natural. Thanks to these bags it was a real pleasure to swim in the warm sea and for Mexico this was the best place to snorkel without having to go on a boat trip. Another few years and it will be a real haven for sea life, so well done for the hotel to have done this.
A short mention of the Spa where I had an 80minutes relaxing massage. As usual this was not cheap but the Spa and its staff is very good. Having booked a treatment I was given an unlimited pass for my self and my partner to use the hydro room facilities which was fun.
This time we only did one trip with Thompson, the half day swimming with the turtles in Akumal Bay followed by a swim in a Cenote. This was a very good trip as we were lucky being only a small group of 8 people. Canadian guide Mary was very friendly and knowledgeable and Akumal is a lovely place. We did see quite a few turtles and the Cenote swim was very refreshing.
We did take the free shuttle from the hotel to Cancun but beware they drop you to a new not quite finished luxury shopping Mall. So my advice is just go a bit further down the road to La Isla shopping centre which is much nicer or do your research and take a taxi downtown Cancun.
Be aware that there are many weddings taking place in the hotel so if you want a quiet room ask to be in a block away from where wedding evenings are happening. Although you are not allowed to smoke in your room we had some very Ignorant American smokers above us who continually threw their cigarettes' buts onto the ground outside our terrace. May be the hotel management could provide ashtrays and leave them on the balconies/terraces and just may be these ignorant people might use them.
Last year we loved The Excellence Cancun 10 minutes drive from the El Dorado. Both are excellent hotels The Excellence had the edge for accommodation and entertainment but El Dorado has the edge on food and sea swimming/snorkelling.
One last things there is no need to bring Pesos just American Dollars with loads of one dollar bill to tip the lovely staff.

Room Tip: Make sure you are in a newly refurbished room If with Thompson no need to pay for upgrade to ocean...

First time we have been to an El Dorado Resort. Our Travel Agent said it was Paradise carved out of a jungle and she wasn't wrong. This was by far the most beautiful place we have been.

We are used to the buffet style dining so it took a little getting used to the Al la carte eating. Being this is off season it makes me wonder how they handle large crowds. The food was the best we have had. We did not have a bad meal. We only had one occasion where there was a wait to be seated so we just opted to go to another restaurant. The new restaurant was the Santa Fe. They are slowly opening it to full time. We had to book 5 days in advance and when we got ready to order they said they were out of beef.....I expressed my displeasure with that and the waiter talked to the manager and he came back and said they had beef. Oh well growing pains.

There was new construction going on at both ends of the resort. Being that is what I do for a living I was not ready to be around construction. They were very careful not to be in your space and it was very clean and kept all areas around them free and clear of debris.

Our room was great with the swim up pool and the whirlpool tub in the room. The bed was not the usual hard as a rock Mexican bed. You had at least three options for a pillow type.

The resort is big but the shuttle carts run all the time so a ride was never far away. The staff was great. A special thanks to Edgar our Concierge. He did many things to make our stay great. All the waiters and staff were nothing but friendly and helpful.

We will definitely be going back because we are now members of their Vacation Club. We have been going to this area for 15 plus years and have been to many sales pitches and did not care for any of them. Thanks to Franco we are now members of the El Dorado family and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Go for the upgrade to the swim up room.

My Wife and I stayed here from Oct26- Nov2 2013 for our one year wedding anniversary. What can I say besides that this is a top notch resort. The whole staff here is super friendly (my wife and I joked that they all take happy pills before coming to work). The grounds are super clean and very well maintained. We stayed in casita 2701 which is well worth the money. It is only 20 yards from the beach and pool. The concierge handled all dinner reservations upon our arrival and they were very quick with answers when we had a question. Food at this resort is the best I've ever had outside of the United States. We ate at a different restaurant every night and had to be rolled out of out chairs some of the nights because we were so full. Had room service one night and they were very prompt with delivery. Maintenance staff were very quick to fix things, we had a light bulb go out in the shower and it was fixed within the hour. We only have 2 complaints which are as follows: The resort is huge so therefore they provide golf carts for transit around which is very hard to come by at night, sometimes it is a 10-15 minute walk to your dinner. The other complaint is about the selling of a "timeshare". We had told the concierge that we wanted to see the presidential suites to see what they are like for when we return. The concierge agreed and at the end of showing us the suites they proceeded with a 30min (really 2 hours) sales pitch. They were extremely pushy and did not like no for an answer. So my suggestion is to not ask to see the suites and if they offer, which they will, politely decline. I had read other reviews on here about this and told myself I am not going to fall for their trick and they got me sat down trying to get us to be members(timeshare). The are very good at getting you into the sales office. This was the only true thing that we did not like, and as far as I'm concerned is very inappropriate of this resort to do this to their customers who are already paying good money to stay there. We will however still return to this resort in the future.

If you eat at JOJO'S ask for Victor, Best server I've ever had.

Room Tip: Stay in the casita side, it's well worth the upgrade

Got an upgrade from one of their othe properties and we actually felt guilty for what we got here vs. what we paid. The food is amazing for an AI and each restaurant is unique in its own way. The asian restuarant and restaurant under the lobby were our favs (best beef carpaccio I've ever had.) Also loved the smoothie / juice bar - great for breakfast or healthy snacks.

Large property but we like walking. Beach was nice with man made breaks allowing us to snorkel and feed the fish (take a few pieces of bread from breakfast) and you'll have hundreds of fish swarming you in no time. We've been to over a dozen AI's in Mexico, Cuba and DR and this is the best.

Great service, great staff, great attention to the little details really made a difference. We almost cancelled when we heard about the ongoing construction,...and we were glad we didn't. The construction zone was less than 200ft away from our room and it didn't disrupt us or even cause enough moise to be noticed at any time during our stay. thanks to JayC, Facundo, Angela, and the rest of the staff for a great vacation!!

Enjoyed a two week break at El Dorado Royale. The resort is large but the grounds are well laid out and beautifully maintained.

Regular golf buggies help you access any of the areas or restaurants you wish to visit. There are plenty of concierge stations where the staff are happy to answer any questions you have.

Our room was an ocean view second floor in Block 2; plenty of room and recently refurbished overlooking the Health Bar and pool area. Only one small criticism in regard to maid services the timing was inconsistent depending who was on duty. The room could be serviced by 10.00 or sometimes it was after 16.00; same for the evening 'turn down' sometimes happened; sometimes not??

The food was very good, if you wanted extra you only had to ask. Top brand drinks; great cocktails, the house wine was ok; although the staff do try to sell you wine from their wine list, the price is ridiculous $60 for a bottle of pinot grigio.

The weather was fabulous until the last 3 days then it rained and rained but that can happen anywhere.

We had an excellent holiday; the staff are very pleasant and eager to please; they do care that you are enjoying the resort and all it has to offer.
