Resort is very nice. Very tropical. Must get taxi to get to town. We enjoyed walking around town except for the consent barrage of street vendors, who don't like to give up after many NO'S
Food a bit pricey. We went to store and got lots of food for 6 people. So we did breakfast in room and had lots of snacks (popcorn) and some dinners. Excersions were great.
The worst was the timeshare people, very persistent. some were downright rude. Be very careful the deal is a scam. Check Ripoff website before you go. Be prepared

The resort is absolutely beautiful. The pool areas is huge, pools everywhere and that's because there is no water access to the ocean. The beach area is nice with plenty of chairs but you can't get into the water easily as there is coral and rock all along the beach.

Restaurants were great, we tried all of them. But don't miss out going into town because they have wonderful restaurants there also. If you like to swim in the ocean, then take the shuttle to the town and go sit on the beach and enjoy the water. There is chairs and umbrellas available.

The timeshare presentation was horrible and very sleezy. We were approached by 5 people to buy during the presentation. The worst timeshare presentation we attended.

The room was great but we had a studio and had nothing in the room like a refrig, microwave or a coffeepot. We asked for a coffeepot and got one but the coffee we bought was awful. Tulum was great but the tour stopped at a jewelry store where we spent most of the time. If you want to go to Tulum, get a taxi or rent a car. All in all it was a very nice resort and the people were great.

The room was nice, and the bed was comfy, but this place has terrible acoustics. You can here every door open and shut through the whole hallway and in your room. You can hear the neighbors TV , and hair dryer and whirlpool bath.
There are no ocean views here.
The transport shuttles throughout the compound really only take you to the lobbies and a couple other spots, then you have to get out and wait for another. We walked everywhere cause that was much easier, also the carts were on a schedule so its not like you can just call and get picked up. You wait on their schedule. The transport to Playa del Carmen runs on a very limited schedule both there and back. The transport out to the gate has an even more limited schedule. We walked out to the gate and took a collectivo, and that was fine, but would be not comfortable in rain or hot sun.
The computers at the cyber cafe's have broken keyboards- so you spend all your time trying to log in and then get locked out, all on time you have paid for.
The waiters were nice and the service was good, and the food at all of the restaurants we ate at was fine-Frida's, Blue Fish and Havana Moon. But the restaurant hours and locations are all a little different and it takes a while to figure out what's open and where they are.
All in all, being at this resort felt a little stressful, it is not a user friendly type of place.
I didn't have a kitchen and so I was so happy that I had thought to pack my little 2 cup coffee maker. Otherwise it would have been a 15 minute walk for a 50 peso cup of coffee every morning. I like to bring my own beverages and snacks down to the beach for lunches and snacks, and then dine out for dinner. The rules and regulations of this resort forbid you to have a cooler or your own beverages at pools or beach.
The grounds are beautiful but there is not one place to duck out of the rain, and have a dry place to sit.
I'm sure this place is fine for many, but we are the type who like to explore and get off the grounds, splurge some, but are also on a budget somewhat. So for us this place was not a good fit at all.

The resort was wonderful. Pools, food, cleanliness was great. Staff exceptional. Even the resort physician was great (dehydrated son needed attention). Beach was not so great & the weather rainy. Boo!

Most of the Grand Mayan is up for sale. Whether it's the Grand Mayan, The Bliss, The Grand Bliss and The Grand Luxx. Each of these 'hotels' are individual. They try to fill The Bliss (which is not the Grand Bliss, btw) first. Make sure your reservation specifically states which of the choices you are paying for before you go (that is if you care). Most of these units are beautiful and the entire place is beautiful. Ongoing pools, lovely, lovely grounds. Most of the staff are friendly and well spoken.

The only problem with the entire complex is that they are out to sell you a unit. If you are interested in ever buying one, first, we have one to sell. But, the sales pitch is one that has many layers and if you do your due diligence you will be okay but realize that whenever you go to Mexico you have the air fare to consider.

We thought the restaurants were very high priced. The Italian one was okay but not worth what we paid (we are Italian and perhaps more critical than others would be). We could not afford the Asian restaurant. The Mexican restaurant was good but I don't know good Mexican cuisine to really give a good report on that. There is a little deli and ice cream stand there also as well as a place that makes the best crepes I've ever had.

So all in all, I would recommend The Grand Mayan Rivera Maya. Our rental there is beautiful and we are looking forward to find a low airfare to return.

Room Tip: This is not an all-inclusive hotel and you have to consider cooking in, or eating out and add pricin...

We requested to be as close to the lobby as possible because we had parents who had difficulty walking. We didn't get as close to the lobby as we would have wished, but there is a little train/shuttle service that goes to/from the lobby. You take the various color-coded shuttles depending on where you want to go on the resort.

A few of the things we really liked:
1. The amount of pool space - plenty of lounge chairs for all! And plenty of pool bars.
2. The friendly staff
3. The restaurants are pretty decent
4. Easy to leave the resort and get to Playa del Carmen or take side trips
5. Loved our trip Ek Balam and the Cenote as well as our trip to Xel Ha. All arranged through the concierge on site. Excellent advice/service.

A few things we didn't like:
1. The sales pitch, but we did get a free breakfast for anyone who wanted it in our party of 10 and just two of us stuck around to hear the spiel. Lots of pressure though - so be warned.
2. The good thing is, it's a big resort, the bad thing, it's a big resort. If you don't like walking to the amenities or waiting for the shuttle, you won't like this place.
3. We were told that the beach right on property is under-going rehab. We had to walk quite a distance to get to a designated swimming area, but it was worth it. In Cabo we actually have to drive if we want to swim in the ocean.

One other note, we ran into quite a few Minnesotans down there, which was quite fun. :-)

Room Tip: Be sure to call ahead and request room location if you have special needs. Also, do request a mattr...

We are just back from spending 1 week at this resort and all I can say is that I concur with the rest of the glorious reviews.
The place is huge and very busy and so one would expect levels of service that are sub-par but not here - from the time you :
-communicate with Concierge in preparation for the trip -very prompt & useful
-when you get the taxi pick-up arranged by the hotel(our plane landed on time but the traffic was so bad on the runway we waited for an hour to get to our bay but the taxi still waited for us!
-set foot where the Buggage service levels are wonderful
-check-in was busy but we were given our folder to complete while waiting - the building request made about
2 months was granted and so we could even walk t the Lobby when we wanted to/Shuttle took time to arrive - most welcome indeed
-Shuttle takes you to ypur building with a friendly driver(I hate the word bell boy) - we bonded with Jorge who is quite a friemdly chap

the place is daunting but one's given a map & a detailed explanation of where everything is and the shuttles are there to take one to the various attractions as marked by the flags on them.

the very few areas of improvement:
1. Even though the rooms are amazimgly beutiful & clean Dish washing seems to be something of a disgrace here - you just see a small note in the kitchen area abt this and while you might think it is not serious it is - wash your own dishes. unusual for me when there's no dishwasher which the US resorts have so that makes sense. there is no offer to pay for this service either - at least was not mentioned to us

2. Vida deception for the unsuspecting guest - Check-in person tells you to go so resort details can be explained. Even after reading a lot abt this I realised half-way through that this was where this was leading - the free breakfast & 10% off Food & Bev bill
We still chose to go for this 3-4 hour saga of begging for business - this is what it comes down to at the end - you feel for the sale people who have targets to meet. the pressure must be really high. It is a very oiled organism for sure
advantage for me was just to get to hear abt the resort & others in their stable and we got to save 30 usd pps on a great breakfast + the wonderful albeit quite full Isla Mujeres cruise that was free for 2 adults

Tipping is customary everywhere you go & happens with ease because Mexicans seem to be reared exceptionally well in the area of service.
Do request a matress cover as the beds are indeed quite hard.
