I took my Mom to this resort for her 76th birthday. We had an absolutely fabulous time.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. So what if you have to walk a lot. My mother is 76 years old and never complained once. If you don't want to walk, time it right and take the shuttle. We were not located close to the pool area either. We were in an area referred to as the "Jungle." The only time we had to wait quite a while for the shuttle was on our last night there when we went to the Mexican Fiesta Dinner and Show which was awesome and very funny.

Our condo was spotless and the cleaning ladies did a great job. So what if you don't have a dish washer. It won't kill you to wash a few dishes. We had one small problem with a squeaky fridge door which was fixed in under an hour of my putting in a service call.

My Mom and I also did the timeshare presentation - only to receive the $300 in resort credits :0) and our guy wasn't pushy at all. I told him right off the bat that we were not going to purchase a unit. I just wanted to see what the resort next door was going to be like. Once seeing it I just booked a week at the brand new Grand Bliss which is right next door to this resort. Paid $425.00 including all taxes.

Regarding the beach... no it's not Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands. You can't just walk into the water and take a dip without stepping on rocks. I suggest bring water shoes to wear or you can walk 5-10 minutes either way and the beach is much better.

I do recommend taking the shuttle ($5.00 each way) into Playa del Carmen (Walmart) to buy breakfast and luncheon meats etc. and alcohol. It is very expensive at the resort. If you are on a budget eat your breakfast and lunch in the room and go to the restaurants for dinner. If you are not on a budget spend away!!!!!

So stop your griping and walk, take the shuttle, swim in the pools, eat the great food. But overall enjoy your vacation. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone.

Best vacation ever and we've been all over the world. Great and nice staff; excellent service overall. Restaurants and food is excellent. Little market had great deli food, coffee, desserts and general groceries. I'm not taking off my wrist band from the resort until same time next year! Do not get suckered in to a timeshare presentation. They term it owner disclosure or something like that. Don't do it you also lose a $20 cash deposit. 90 min presentation is really 4-5 hours. Not worth the time it takes you from the beautiful pools and lush gardens throughout.

Eleven of us went on a short 1 wk vacation to celebrate four birthdays for my wife, son, sister-in-law, and cousin-in-law. We joined the Grand Mayan many years ago and decided to once again go to Riviera Maya because our past experiences have been excellent with the resort, staff, and activities. This time was no different as we were greeted with the gorgeous and relaxing ambiance of the entire resort. There were so many upgrades since our last visit there, like the whole new Grand Mayan pool that was semi enclosed to protect against the sun. The new Asian restaurant that served everything from sushi to Peking duck. The staff is still as wonderful and caring as always. We had some issues with our first room, but they in turn moved us to another room and upgraded other family members from a Suite to a 1 BR with kitchen. Our housekeepers Guadalupe and Ines, bar tenders Jose and Felipe, and concierge Miguel helped make this trip as relaxing as possible by meeting our several requests. Lastly, with so much to do in the area, we were only able to visit Tulum, Xcaret, and Playa Del Carmen. I would highly recommend the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya in a heartbeat!!

Room Tip: Grand Mayan buildings 1 & 2 top floor corner units facing the lagoon!

We stayed at the Mayan Palace, and were given a complimentary upgrade to the Grand Mayan upon arrival. We let the resort know about a month in advance that we had unique dietary restrictions (our entire family is Vegan), and low and behold upon arrival the executive chef and the head concierge greeted us at the room to discuss the menu we were going to have this week! We were blown away! Everyone touched their hearts whenever they were greeting you and told you their name even the housekeepers. The only critique we had is that if you book an outside tour (say with another tour company rather than through the resorts travel agency), then they force your driver to pick you up outside the main gates, and make you pay to take a taxi to the front gates of the resort. Our tour guides told us this is because they are afraid they will sell a tour to other guests and they would lose money and not book the tour themselves. This was a big turnoff. But other than that, it was truly an incredible resort, with an exceptional experience.

Room Tip: Stay at the Grand Mayan, not at the Mayan Palace.

I traveled with my BF in October we stayed for a week so we had a lot of time to experience much of the resort.
Guest room-we had a suite with a full living room and separate bedroom. The room was well appointed and very clean, we barely used the fully stocked kitchen, but if you plan to cook your own meals it appeared to have everything you would need.
The bed was fine-comfortable. The bathroom had two sinks plus a separate sink outside of the bathroom. There was a large soaking tub in the bedroom. We never once ran out of towels.

Pools-so many pools, we enjoyed the one with a bar most near our guest room. We found the bartender and server Umberto and Julio to be professional, helpful, extra friendly and overall a delight. They greeted us like they were sincerely happy to see us every time we visited and let us know about drink specials. We used the cabanas to stay comfortable in the hot humid air, and they helped us with the arrangements.

Food-Okay here I was less impressed, we really enjoyed the breakfast buffet, but the other restaurants we just okay. I am not a foodie but I do have insight as a hospitality professional and I can say the food was just so so. We didn’t try every restaurant though so maybe I missed something. Room service was fast and professional.

The resort is way out of the way so you will have to rent a car or arrange transport if you want to go in to town. You can catch the collectivo on the highway but the driveway to the lobby is about ½ a mile long, for us in the hot heat and humidity getting around was a bit uncomfortable even just walking to the pool and the restaurant…

Bottom line is I would recommend this resort and I would go back.

Room Tip: Grand Mayan is much closer to the facilities than Mayan palace or the other building.

We had never been to this area before, but have traveled to several other resorts in Mexico.
Pro's: Resort itself is beautiful...tons of gorgeous pools, great atmosphere, unique little pool bars, fun restaurants, nice staff.
Con's: The majority of the hotel is in the jungle, there are no ocean front rooms and i'm pretty sure no ocean view rooms either. If you are looking for a beachy vacation, this is not it. Hanging out by the pool is great, but it's silly to travel to a place where the beaches are beautiful and then not have it anywhere in sight. The property itself is on the beach, but it is not situated in a way that you are really looking at it unless you go out of your way to seek it out. Also the resort is so sprawling that you have to take the golf cart shuttle from you room to get to the pool, restaurants, etc. We are younger and were fine with walking (probably about a half mile from our building to the main lobby), but we had older people in our party that it was more difficult for. We really felt like anytime we left our room it was a major ordeal to get over to the main buildings. Last complaint was that the rooms had a slightly musty smell, I have read other reviews that said the same. Not sure what that's all about.
Had a fine time, but if I were to do it over again I would find a resort that has better view and ocean access and was less spread out.

Room Tip: Building 1 would be ideal for access to lobby, pools, etc.
