This is a very nice resort. It was clean, the grounds are very well kept, the gardens are beautiful. The pools are large and there are many of them with plenty of pool chairs in the sun and shade. You can go from Maya to Lindo to Pariso as the resorts are all connected and it's easy to find your way around. The beach is long, fairly wide and clean. The rooms are comfortable and clean. Our maid service was great and getting extra towels or bottled water was as simple as asking for them. They may want to check the A/C in the rooms, it worked fine but come the really hot weather it may need a boost. The food was good, not great but good. Most of the buffets serve the same things and dinners were good at the restaurants. If you are looking for gourmet food you won't find it here. Room service was prompt. Most if not all hotel staff speak pretty good english, they are polite and the service was good throughout the resort. The nightly shows were good and fun, and considering the performers are hotel staff who work all day, they do a very nice job. We had a very nice stay and I would stay here again.

We just returned from the Iberostar Maya whew we went with our 2 kids (6 & 2 years old) from NY. We went on the wednesday prior to start of school spring recess to get a better flight deal. We also booked the hotel room about 2 months in advance. Yet, when we got to our room, it was disappointing as the view was at best mediocre. The balcony was right next to a thick set of trees...it was claustrophobic. They showed another room which still had almost the same amount of trees and what little clearing there was showed nothing of interest. We could at least see the sky here. To get a room with pool-view, they expected us to call back the next day and check for room availability after people checked-out. We decided to settle for this room than "inconvenience" (as evidenced by the bell-boy & impatient concierge on phone) them further or ourselves by showing us more apt rooms. (BTW, the only beach-view rooms they have are presidential suites!)
On trying to get to one of their several restaurants for the buffet dinner (theres 3-4 that serves buffet for breakfast/lunch/dinner...rest are a la carte), we got lost for 45 minutes even with the help of almost 10 people who work there (most didn't understand english). For a la carte, they expect us to reserve at one of the 4-5 restaurants well in advance (1-2 days). They gave a hard time to reserve late in the day for same night. But when we got to the restaurants, they were barely even half full. In the end, buffet or a la carte, food was pathetic. Buffet seems styled after what you'd get on cruise ships. A la carte is very limited and hardly authentic or appealing. Service was terrible everywhere. In the hundreds of servers we came across, only 3 stood out in being friendly and helpful. Everwhere else, they were gruff and unpleasant. The pool bar servers were outrightly racist. We're indian. The smiles came as soon as they moved on from me to the caucasian next to me. (Believe me, I was full of smiles and trying my spanish and trying to engage anyone in a conversation.)
As for accessing the Internet, despite charging an extra so much, most of the time it didn't work properly.
The final thing is the resort was too large, over-crowded and designed ridiculously. It was hard to move between beach, pool and room in any practical manner. Every path was unnecessarily long and mainly to highlight some aesthtic artifact/architecture of a building.
If you have little kids and/or are looking for an intimate, service-oriented, practical beach resort, which is value-for-money & AI, find another resort. I surely will not go back even when the kids are older.

I stayed at the Iberostar Maya in Dec 09 with one of my girlfriends. Even though the resort was probably only at about 60% capacity, we still had an amazing time!!! This is a very large resort, so if you don't like to walk - this isn't the place for you. We didn't mind it - the grounds were so beautiful, and it felt good to walk off all our food and drinks! It was a little confusing at first though - it took us a few days to figure out where everything on the resort was located. Also, you cannot see the beach from any of the rooms or restaurants. There is a walkway/ bridge you must walk on (about 100 yards) before you get to the beach.

This review is pretty long, so i apologize, but just wanted to make sure I cover all points. I know how important it is to read reviews before you choose a resort. Please don't listen to any of the bad reviews on this place - from my experience, they are in no way true!!

SERVICE: I cannot say enough about the service here....they treated you practically like royalty! Tipping didn't seem to make a difference in the quality of service. We tipped occasionally, and it was very much appreciated. Our server Ezequiel at the Italian restaurant was so amazing, he even remembered our names all the way thru dinner!

RESORT: Everything was absolutely beautiful....from the grounds to the lobby to the pools. There were flowers and palm trees everywhere. Everything was very well maintained, and you constantly saw workers cleaning/picking up trash. Check-in was fairly easy and quick, and they even took us directly to our room in a golf cart. No carrying your own luggage - they take it right up to your room.

THE ROOM: Our suite was very nice and large. I believe we were in building 63 or 64, and had a large balcony with 2 sitting chairs, a table and a hammock (which was so uncomfortable, we couldn't even lay in it!) We had an amazing view of the small pool right outside our building. It was very nice and quiet - hardly anyone ever used this pool. We had a nice sitting area with couch, chairs, and a desk. Our beds were fairly hard, as most reviews have stated....but we still slept fine. Nothing too much to complain about! The bathroom was also a very nice size and just beautiful! A 2 person jacuzzi tub, a glass shower, and double sinks. Everything was marble and looked brand new. Our mini-bar was stocked daily with water, sodas, and beer (Dos Equis). There were a few times we wanted extra water - we asked the maid and had it almost immediately.

ROOM SERVICE: The cleaning staff was excellent! Even though they tended to come at different times throughout the day, they kept everything immaculate. Always brought an abundance of clean towels, and each day we had a different towel animal made for us. We tipped them about $2/ day.

FOOD: The food was okay to good. Some things were better than others. The buffets for breakfast were very good - large selection & had a made to order omelet station. Lunch buffets - there were 2 on the Maya side. One was by the main pool and not air conditioned, but there was another one that was air conditioned by the theater . Both were decent, but same selection every day. There was also a beach-side grill that offered burgers, fries, salad, etc. The one day we ate at the Del Mar lunch buffet and we liked this much better the Maya side. The buffet for dinner was also just ok. Most foods were pretty bland, but there was a large selection. Ala Carte restaurants - we ate at the Japanese twice. This was our favorite restaurant! (Hibachi style but you could also order off the menu). The Italian restaurant - service was superb, but food was just mediocre. Cajun restaurant was good, but not spicy like you would expect. One thing i noticed on the entire resort that their steak just has a different taste than you are used to in the states.

ROOM SERVICE: There was a limited menu, but this is included as well. Only ordered twice - once for breakfast and once at about 2am. Both times it came within a half hour of ordering! The pizza on the room service menu is def better than at the buffet!

BEACH: This is what you come here for!!! Absolutely gorgeous!! The sand was white, and the water was a very pretty blue. Very clean. We never had a problem getting a beach chair or palpaya, and we usually didn't even get to the beach till 10 or 11am. There was also occasional beach service for drinks - a waitress would walk around, but was sporadic, so you were better off just going to the beach bar yourself. Which isn't a problem - it was just a few steps away!

DRINKS: Excellent - they would make you whatever you wanted. They didn't skimp on the alcohol, and they had top shelf liquor. However, if you want top shelf, you have to ask for it. HINT - try the tequila slammers (its a shot)!!! I don't even like tequila, but these were amazing. The only beer available on the resort is Dos Equis.

POOLS: The main pool was HUGE and very nice! Since it was so large, you could always find a spot to yourself. Never crowded. There was a very nice pool bar, half was located under a waterfall. Lazy river ride was nice and relaxing. The wave pool, i don't believe worked the entire time we were there.

ACTIVITIES/ NIGHTLIFE: We didn't take part in any of the daytime activities, but there were things such as water aerobics and salsa dancing lessons. I was disappointed in the watersports. We wanted to take the catamarans out one day, but were told it was about $40 to get a half-hour lesson on how to use them. There wasn't too much of a nightlife - the resort was very empty at night. This could have been due to the fact that we went there in the off-season. But don't walk anywhere alone at night as it's so deserted. There are always theworkers w/ the little golf carts that will drive you to whatever part of the resort you want to go to. We actually really enjoyed the nightly shows that started around 9pm or so. There was a different one every night and they were all very good for a resort!! There was a bar right in the theater and table service as well. All bars including the lobby bar and sports bar were completely dead at night. Make sure you go to the Galaxy nightclub! This was so much fun, and definitely where the nightlife is at. They have 2 bars and a nice size dance floor. They play alot of good music - hip hop, etc. I believe it didn't open till about 11 or midnight.

Overall, we loved this resort and cannot wait to go back! We met some great friends here too! Even though the food was just mediocre, that didn't stop us from still having an amazing vacation. There is a huge selection, so you definitely won't go hungry (they aren't kidding when they say 24 hr food service!) . We didn't get sick from any of the food or from drinking the water/ice in the restaurants. Just make sure you brush your teeth in the room with bottled water! Definitely walk through the other resorts - there is always something new to see. At the Del Mar, there was a pool that ran the entire length of the resort, with waterfalls at the end. (Great photo opportunity!) If you have any questions, feel free to message me! :)

We have stayed at number of resorts in the Caribbean and the service, accomodations and amenities at this Iberostar are top notch in all cases. The staff is constantly working on keeping this place perfect. This is without a doubt the cleanest resort that is not brand new that we have ever stayed at. While I'm on the subject of the staff, they are extremely friendly...everyone from the bellman to the housekeeping staff.

The resort is very large, so you need to decide if you would like a large resort that features a ton of amenities, or a smaller resort that would not have as many options.

ROOMS - We stayed on the Maya side. The rooms in this section are very large with a nice sitting area and great bathroom that features a double vanity, whirlpool tub and glass shower. The resort is very large and depending on where your room is located can create quite a walk from end to the other...some will complain about that, but we found ourselves eating so much all day long that the long walks reduced the guilt.

FOOD - with regard to the food, breakfast was very good regardless of the location. We tried every restaurant for dinner with the exception of the seafood choice and thought they were all excellent. The buffets for lunch were just marginal. The beach grille down by the Del Mar side had a better selection than the one by the Maya side. We tried room service just once for dinner and I would rate it as just okay. Nice option if you don't feel like going out for.

BEACH - One thing to be prepared for is that this resort does not have a real "beach" feel. The beach is separated by about 100 yards of "jungle" from the resort so you really don't even see the beach or ocean until you go through the paths to get to the beach. It's a great beach once you get there though.

ACTIVITIES - there is tons to do here. Beach volleyball or soccer, pool volleyball, water polo, basketball, a lazy river, wave pool and the list goes on. We played golf one day and were impressed by the course condition and challenge of the layout. Nice driving range, putting green and practice area. We also used the Spa and the treatment rooms and sauna, whirlpools, locker rooms, etc., are first class. There is also a nice fitness center.

What would we like to see changed.....they require reservations at all the restaurants in the evening. I can see that being necessary for perhaps a couple of options, but not each one. You end up eating either too early or too late based on availability. It's frustrating when you walk by a restaurant that isn't even half full but they won't let you eat there without a reservation. The other change I would like to see if is the requirement for long pants for men at each restaurant at night. I can understand that restriction for the more formal options, but not the casual ones such as the Mexican restaurant or buffets. Another change we would like to see would be to just have pool and beach towels available rather than a card program to "check them out." This resort is expensive to require customers to do this.

I wouldn't recommend this resort for a honeymoon or a couple on a vacation...stick to an adult's only all inclusive, but for families or groups this resort is a great option.

this is an amazing resort. I have been in pervious years to the lower ones, so this year my mom brought me to the Maya. When we got there the lobby was really nice and we were greeted with drinks ( non- alcoholic.... pretty much the only non alcoholic drink i had while i was there ) . Because we came a few days before the big spring break rush we got upgraded from a junior suite to a regular suite. Which means that the room was just bigger and had a nice Jacuzzi. Unfortunately, the resort was running at only 57% capacity the first day so i was sure that i was going to be having a terrible time.
Fortunately i managed to get a adult bracelet so i could go to the club ( Galaxy) . The club i would say is where its at at night. There is a teen club too, but it isn't as fun... for obvious reasons. Galaxy is two floors and has two bars, and pretty good service if you offer a tip, or if your girl . Even when the resort wasn't at full capacity there were lots of people there. There are some good seating areas, and there is security that check your bracelets to make sure you didnt glue an adult bracelet together to get in. I met some pretty cool people there and i never felt like i was in danger.

The food at the resort was... about the same as every other mexican resort.. I have been going to mexico every single year since i was about 5 and i have been all around to different resorts and usually the food is Okay. It wasn't like i was eating much anyways because i find the alcohol makes me less hungry.. But the food was pretty good, if you like cheese you will be happy! The buffets have theme nights so sometimes its italian, or chinese and seafood. Alll in all.. the food is pretty average. We didnt try any restaurants though, just buffets. The breakfast buffets were really good though, lots of selection. And they have a vegetarian section and a health food section.

The Shows are night were entertaining.. i mean, most shows are usually cheessy. But if you get a few drinks in yourself and participate it can be really fun! Plus watching all the drunk teenagers is always funny. The star friends were really really nice to us.. and they always came to the club to hang out and dance, which is nice if you dont know anyone because they will MAKE you make friends . Only if you ask them of course. there are tons of activities during the day, like dancing and... all that stuff. Sometimes they even have bull riding ( the fake kind). You wont be bored if you get involved :)

I took a little stroll into the adult resort next door ( haha, ooopps) it was empty.. literally. I think i saw... 6 people. So if you want a fun time.. i would go for the maya. Its also nice to stay at the maya so you can go to all the other 4 resorts ( besides for the adult one) . So you can go to ANY of the restaurants or pools or bars. The Bar in the lobby of the Maya is beautiful, it has a HUUUGEEE snake above it and you just kinda want to sit there and pretend your in tulum or something. The swim up bars are pretty good, i really spent No time in the pool surprisingly... the beach is where it is at. There is volleyball tournaments all day and food on the beach, ( hamburgers, hotdogs, fries, fruit salad) . We also went banana boating, it was really fun... its 20$ for 20 minutes... and trust me... 20 minutes is enough . The lazy river is really fun with a beer in hand .

The staff will try to get you to go to a HUGe club/ show called " Coco Bongo" . I wasn't allowed to go because you have to be 18 , but as much as you hear about it... its apparently NOT overrated and its actually a really great show. The spring breakers were not that bad... i mean... if you go during march... your gonna have spring breakers so dont complain. There were alot of teens, but no grad trips without parents or anything crazy like that. Long story short, its a great resort. Good for OLDER teens are march break ( 17,18,19) or if you can get them an adult bracelet . I saw lots of kids making friends and having fun and there are ice-creams bars !!!! Oh... and the drinks they make... very alchaholic... you can expect there to be more rum then coke in a rum and coke .

i would recomend this resort to anyone who wants a nice vacation, families. But not really single people because they just look sad and lonely. Also the resort requires alot of walking so if you have a disability you might have a few problems. But the rooms have elevators if you are not on the ground floor. OHH!! and there is 24/7 room service, which we ordered every night after the club, it is realy nice and convient.
