“Iberostar Maya excellence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

My husband and I just spent 7 nights at Iberostar Paraiso Maya April 14-21, 2013. This was our best visit to Iberostar to date. In all, we have stayed at the Iberostar complex 13 times since 2003 - including the Tucan in Playacar, the Paraiso del Mar, Lindo and Maya. The service at the Maya this year was excellent - and the Ibero management have made noticeable upgrades to services within the Maya in the past year. The evening buffet at the Maya has been upgraded to offer buffet service nightly, exclusive to Maya guests and it included crab & lobster and sushi/sashimi every night. Because we like a loose schedule (or no schedule at all) when we vacation, we did not book any of the specialty restaurants on this trip, preferring to stay at the beach until 6, then leisurely heading back to the room to shower and get ready for dinner, stopping by the lobby for a glass of champagne before deciding when and where to eat. The Maya buffet was excellent and we were quite happy with it. We also wandered over to the Beach or del Mar hotels to sit in their beautiful and active lobbies, then get a bite to eat at their buffets. We enjoy the variety of international foods, fresh salads and interesting options offered, we are not American food snobs, and do not base our vacation on food. It's almost too hot to eat a ton, so we take the moderate approach and are happy with the quality. Most people are as happy as they make their minds up to be ...so many people eat pizza and burgers there - despite amazing options,,,we don't get it...but that's the American way I guess. The conciege reps assigned to our building were attentive an checked with us daily to make sure we had all the services we wanted - and in fact they made suggestions on some things we had not considered. To help us celebrate our anniversary, the staff made a special night for us by sending up champagne and a special turndown service that was amazing (included bubble bath in the jaccuzzi and rose petals). With the Maya booking - access to the Spa wet area (European water baths, jaccuzzi, serenity pool area) was complimentary - and we enjoyed that 3 times on this trip. The massage therapists on the property are true professionals. The massage at the poolside was one of the best I have had anywhere - and is certainly on par with the services at the Iberostar spa - whose ambiance is wonderful. Our rooms were impeccably cleaned daily and we received a second towel service in the early evening. Good service from wait staff and management alike. The lazy river is fun even for adults, the pools are endless, and there are plenty of palapas at the beach so we can stay out of the sun (tip: the beach palapas become more available after 2:00 - which is when we head to the beach anyway....there is almost always a wedding on the beach to watch. And there is bar and food service at the beach as well. Iberostar is one of the few resorts that provide shuttle service several times a day to Playa del Carmen and back ($5 per person each way) which is always fun to spend an evening in town. The Iberostar's own shopping area has music every evening, a great taco shop, carousel for the kids, and a place to stroll and enjoy. We return every year in part because the tennis instructors who have been there for years are friendly, welcoming and accessible and they have become friends - the courts are good and the weather perfect for playing every day. The fitness rooms are well appointed and their fitness people are helpful. The reason we return to Iberostar Paraiso every year is: the friendliness of all the staff, the impeccably maintained property, gorgeous architecture and gardens, a variety of activities, which we can choose to do or not do, attentive service and total relaxation, We are looking forward to returning next spring to the Maya.

just returned from Iberostar Maya resort we were there 4/25 thru 5/2 ,leading up to our trip i was watching the trip advisor reviews about the maya and the lindo and i have to admit that there were some reviews that were down right nasty... but i have been there before and knew that resort was excellent when we were there in 2010.. well i have to say to any one who posted a bad review of the Maya you are full of s--t ,and must be from another resort or just impossible to please .. now to my review of this resort , this resort is just how i remembered it great food and service ,we stayed in room 6187 close to pools and beach and the best breakfast restaurant with Luis greeting us every morning and Francisco our waiter there ,top notch people ,breakfast buffet was always amazing every thing you could ever want for breakfast at you request !! the lunch buffets were just as good with an unbelievable amount of beef, fish, chicken, pork and everything in between plus several different kinds of ice cream ,i loved the coconut ...and all the bars are conveniently located thru out the resort so you didn't have to go long between drinks the best bartenders were, Jose ,Enrique at the snake bar ,Javier at the pool bar and Alejandro at the lindo bar . and temio who was in several different bars all are excellent .. then to the ala carte restaurants which seemed to have the most differing reviews that i read before our trip ..first of all if you had any problems getting reservations you didn't try very hard ,as not one but two different concierge's ,Wendy from our building and Nicholas from 63 building who was our concierge in 2010 both said they could get us into any restaurant at any time all you have to do is ask !! hows that for service ??. now to the ala carte restaurants them self our favorites were La marina (seafood) and the steakhouse both restaurants are connected by a common buffet area the first night there we ate at La marina and were amazed at what they had on the buffet alone, huge split king crab legs, dungeness crab claws , huge prawns ,squid ,mussel's calamari, whole baked fish and that was just on the buffet ,we ordered lobster tails every night off the menu usaully each one of us got 2 or 3 tails along with the buffet, incredible if you are not satisfied with that then the rib eye steak at the steak house was great also and even tasted like American beef ..now to Alejandro ( chavez) he is a manager of some of the restauarants in and around the snake bar ,he is a total professional and iberostar should take note of this !! the guy could not do enough for us , he organized our anniversary dinner and did a great job, thank you Alejandro !!! the bellboys there are some of the best i have had the pleasure of being around thanks to ,ANGEL,OSVALDO , RODDY ,FREDDY and the others that gave us rides or moved our luggage ..thanks to Diego in la marina ,Fernando and Arturo in the steakhouse also Phillipe for our anniversary dinner ..and lolly our cleaning lady was great with all the rose petals and little animals she made out of towels .you all made our vacation great ,and lastly we took a trip to tulum (thru Olympus tours Jose booked it ) in the morning one day and from there we went to akumal to swim with the turtles our tour guide for that trip was Emillio and he was great he was smart , funny ,and made that trip one that i will never forget ,if any one who reads this and is going to riviera maya most definitely should go on this tour with emillio it was excellent a must do when there !!!!!

Room Tip: third floor rooms have the best view ,al though none are ocean view

We went on a family trip last week and stayed at Paraiso Maya resort, overall we had a really great relaxing week away. We went with another couple who also have young children, and I can speak for both families with confidence that we were all very impressed with how kid/ family friendly everything was. The accommodations were wonderful, our room couldn't have been cleaner upon arrival and maintained that way throughout our stay. The staff was wonderful, attentive and very friendly. My only comment would be the very limited number of servers at the pool and beach area, each day there was only one person and they came by infrequently at best. Speaking of the pool and beach areas, we were also rather impressed with how clean everything was at all times. In addition to having courteous staff, it was more than evident that they are all very hardworking.

Our only real negative would be the food/ dining experience. I hate to use the term 'foodies', but we do appreciate a well prepared meal. Overall, I would say the food was "good, not great", the best food consistently offered was the endless supply of fresh fruit!. We had two really good meals at the Japanese Hibachi restaurant - "La Geisha", everything else during the week was bland and the daily options for breakfast and lunch in particular were the same every day, no real variety other than what you saw on your first day or two. The other comments I would make would be that reservations are required at every restaurant but the buffet for dinner, that is unless you want to be looked at like you have four heads. Not a big deal in the grand scheme, but when a reservation is required and we are literally eating dinner with maybe two other tables of diners, is it really necessary? Lastly, I am not understanding why men had to wear pants to every restaurant but the buffet. Having stayed at other all inclusive resorts in the past, I understand there is usually a restaurant or two that requires pants, but not EVERY restaurant but one! That was news to me when we arrived, so my one pair of nice pants received regular wear at night unfortunately. I get maintaining a nice appearance, but quite frankly I have nicer shorts than the jeans people were wearing to dinner. People are on vacation in a tropical climate, and wearing pants to dinner every night is not the most comfortable/ relaxing aspect of the trip.

We are certainly aware that it is through their efforts that we are able to achieve our goal of complete guest satisfaction.

We really appreciate your comment about the dress code and it will be taken into consideration. It is a dress code that all our Iberostar hotels have around the world, so our Head Office will be informed.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

My husband, 3 children ages 9, 13, and 15, my mother-in-law, and I just returned from a nine day stay at the Maya. We were there the last week of April. Overall, we had a fantastic time. We paid for a family room which was two full rooms with an adjoining door, and we had plenty of space. The entire facility was immaculate and constantly being cleaned. I have to say the best part of the trip was the service. All of the people that work at the resort are so hard working, pleasant, and accomodating! We never felt like tipping was expected, just appreciated, but we did tip a lot. The pool was really warm, clean, and had fun activities if you wanted to participate. The beach was beautiful and we never had an issue getting a covered seat at either location even when we showed up late in the day. We did two excursions. One was to xcaret and the other to Koba and we really enjoyed both excursions. We probably wouldn't stay for the night time show at xcaret again. It was nice but long and made for a very long day. If we could have left at intermission, it would have been perfect, but we had to wait until 9:40 for the bus and everyone was pretty tired by then. We have stayed at several all inclusives and this one rated well with us. The only thing that could be improved is the food. It was not horrible but more variety on the a la carte menus would be better and the buffets were okay. We ate at the japanese, french, seafood, steak, mexican, and italian restaurants. Once again, the service at all was outstanding and made for an enjoyable experience. I never left hungry and my children and husband were happy so it didn't affect my vacation. We participated in a few activities with the star friends. They were energetic and friendly with my children, but not overbearing. We mostly enjoyed just hanging out by the pool and the beach. We also took advantage of the free use of the wet spa and had an amazing time. It was beautiful with lots of hot tubs, jets, etc. and I would highly recommend checking it out. We didn't have any safety issues, nor were we hounded by vendors at any time. We stayed in building 61 which we felt was a good location. It was really close to the pool, pretty close to the beach, more of a walk to the restaurants. We loved how big the place is. We all love to walk and I didn't gain any weight which I attribute to the amount of walking we did. Our beds were comfortable. I did ask for the egg crate topper which was a tip I received from another trip advisor visitor and it made a difference. We also requested a roll away for my youngest daughter and I have to say it was the most comfortable roll away I've ever seen. My children were actually fighting over it and that never happens. Overall, I would go back for the service, the cleanliness of the place, and my children loved it.

Check in was easy, so was check out - only took a minute

Rooms were nice at the Maya. My 10 yr old enjoyed the jacuzzi tub in room. Great grounds, beautifully landscaped. Concierge at every block of rooms is very helpful. We set up Tennis times with no problem daily.
Beaches were nice with plenty of straw umbrellas to lay under. Huge waves most days which we were prepared for as we brought our own floats.
Snorkeling was not so great on the beach
Pools were huge, wave pool a hit with little ones, lazy river was OK but a bit slow. Daily activities were great. I tried the air rifle and bow and arrow contests as did by sons age 10 & 13.

Star friends were very helpful and did a great job with daily activities and they made it very fun for all- cant say enough about them.

I thought the restaurants were very good. We liked Seafood and Japanese best.

Nightly shows were fun as we attended most of them. Magic show was the best

I would recommend this hotel to any family thinking about Mexico
Can't say enough about the service or the check in and out. My Barcelo hotel check in and out was much much worse a year ago

Great job Iberostar!

GENERAL:
This is a huge property with 5 resorts and separate "mall". The Beach and the Del Mar are the oldest and least expensive. The Lindo is a step up from those and the Maya is the highest end family resort. The Grand is couples only and kind of hidden off to one side of the property. All are very nice. The differences between properties are rooms and restaurants. The Beach and Del Mar can use each other’s facilities and actually share most. The Lindo can use those as well as its own. The Maya has some exclusive facilities and can use all others with the exception of the Grand's The Lindo and Maya share the same pool WHICH IS HUGE!, lazy river and wave pool, access to beach. From my understanding the Maya is the only resort that is 100% jr. suite. That means a partial divider and split level (one step) between bed area and sitting area. The Maya grounds were very lush and the common areas beautiful but a little Disney like. The lobby, lobby bar area and most restaurants are under what is supposed to be a huge Mayan pyramid.
OUR ROOM:
We had a king and we abused our children by having them sleep on the sofa bed. Plenty of room for 4 but no privacy for parents. The bathroom was very large with a separate tub and shower. My only complaint on the room is that the shower leaks out on the floor so you have to put towels down to soak up the water. Not a huge deal but an annoyance. We were upgraded (always ask) to a larger suite that was located in building 62 on the 3rd floor on the back side facing the Grand. Very quiet and private. 62 is a little more secluded than the other building so a little longer to pool but in the middle so equal distance to beach and lobby. The rooms were always very clean. Great staff that we tipped a few bucks every day.
POOL:
Largest I have seen. Very long, stretches almost the whole length of the resort. Has a more quiet open part of the pool with water falls (also close to restaurants) moving up the pool you have the pool bar and the louder area with things always happening. Next is another area of pools that seems the most crowded. (around the middle) Then the wave pool, sports pool and finally closest to the lobby the very lazy river. Something for every pooly! NOTE: As with most resorts the pool chairs go quick so if you want a few together get up early and reserve them with a personal item and towel.
BEACH:
Beautiful large beach and crystal clear water. There are some small areas of rocks but can easily be seen and a nice stretch is located in front of Beach/Del Mar. NOTE: My only bad experience was the water activity shack. It included kayaks, small Hobies and snorkeling equipment for free and for pay tubing, scuba trips, parasailing and such. The problem is that they were jerks and were not interested in providing the free activities and always would say a storm is coming, too windy too rough, or not enough staff on duty. Funny thing is they had no issue providing the pay activities during the same time period. I think they were just lazy.
POOL and BEACH NOTES: I have seen on past reviews there are not many bathrooms. They are everywhere so do not worry. Beach bar and grill easy access for all beach goers. Beach chairs are plentiful and do not require an early reserve trip unless you want one under an umbrella.
STAFF:
Great service everywhere I do not think tips are necessary but we gave out a lot of ones to the staff that went beyond.
FOOD:
Remember this is a large all-inclusive resort. We ate at the steak, seafood, French, Japanese restaurants as well as a buffet at Lindo. The steak was way over cooked and seafood was ok the only great thing is both restaurants share a buffet area that has everything you can think off and is very good so you could go there not order an entrée and have a great meal. The French restaurant was very good with great service and no buffet but plenty of courses. The Japanese was very good typical Japanese steak house in the US. The buffet at the Lindo was almost inedible. This got us wondering is the food quality at the other resorts subpar? Over all the dinners were good, not great. The lunches were ok but the food got tiring after 3 days. Breakfast was good and had anything a person could want. Some of the best food in the resort was the Taco Bar in the mall. Absolutely delicious made to order authentic Mexican. A must even if you do not want to shop, disco, or go to the spa at the mall. The other must is the ice cream shop there if you have kids.
CONCLUSION:
Great place for families. I would not stay here on a couple’s trip. One important thing is we felt it was safe to have our 11 and 13 years olds have free run of the resort without constant supervision. Overall great vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade. Building 60 and 64 have a private pools. 62 most quiet. All are jr suites. None...

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 kids ages 4 & 2) just returned from a fantastic one-week vacation at Iberostar Maya. We couldn’t have been happier with the trip and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an easy beach vacation.

FOOD. We haven’t done all inclusive much before, so as a foodie going in I was a bit concerned about the food. I honestly couldn’t have been happier with the choices and quality of the food. At the buffets there was always something we could find that we liked (even for picky children), and the specialty restaurants provided great diversity and service. The restaurants themselves are quite pleasant. You could tell a lot of thought went into making them each special with appropriate décor, music, etc. The Rancho Steakhouse and Geisha hibachi restaurant were our favorites. I am glad we went with the Maya which offers more restaurant options than the Lindo. We did not feel a need to eat outside the resort at all. The main buffet at the Lindo offered the widest selection, but we were equally happy with the smaller buffet near the beach/pool. Everywhere we went, everything was always fresh as they continually are refreshing the buffets.

SERVICE. The service overall couldn’t be topped. We were constantly greeted with friendly smiles from the exceedingly polite and helpful staff, including the bellhops, housekeepers, wait staff, groundskeepers, and concierge (with one exception—see below).

GROUNDS. The grounds are truly beautiful and very well maintained. Everything is extremely clean and in good condition. The staff is constantly going around cleaning and up keeping the property. The resort is VERY large, but having read reviews from others I was prepared for this and found it manageable. To get from one end of the resort to the other is easily a 15 minute walk (esp with small children). For us it was worth the trade off of having a large variety of services and restaurants. It was not very crowded the week we were there, and we never had a problem finding shady seating near the pool or on the beach.

BEACH. Despite having pleasant weather all week, at the beach the first few days it was quite windy and the water was very rough, much to our disappointment. By the end of the trip things thankfully calmed down and we were able to enjoy it more.

CHILDREN / POOLS / ENTERTAINMENT. It was a great place to be with small children – there was plenty to do. We spent the most time at the pools, which were particularly nice, and the beach when we could. They also enjoyed the kiddie pool (small one by kids club), the wave pool, and the lazy river. We were also very happy to have a small pool right within our building (60), which proved very useful when our 2-year-old was napping and our 4-year-old was not. They also liked seeing the wildlife, especially the “monkey cats” (coatis) in the jungle area near the beach. Both kids really enjoyed the children’s “mini disco” at night and making friends to dance with. The adult entertainment started too late for them/us (around 9 pm), but the little we saw of it I don’t think we missed much.

There are only two suggestions I would make:

THE TOWEL SYSTEM – as others have mentioned this is a pain and unreasonable. In a place where everything is effortless and food and everything else is in such abundance, to have to keep track of cheap/thin towels or risk being fined just seems out of place. You can easily exchange them at the concierge in each building, but the stress of having to keep track of them is annoying. In fact we did have towels stolen from us when my husband was alone in the pool with our daughter. His attention while in the pool was rightly focused on our daughter. When he returned to the seats his shirt (which had been on top of the towels) remained, but the towels were missing. After speaking with the concierge, who was very rude and unapologetic about the situation, we did manage to have these replaced without charge.

DRESS CODE – you have nice restaurants. I get it. But we are on vacation, and this is a resort in a tropical climate. My husband did not appreciate having to wear long pants to dinner every night. I would suggest restricting this code to just 1-2 specialty restaurants and allowing shorts in the others.

We booked the trip through Fayette at TripGuy, whom I would also recommend.

All-in-all it was a wonderful and memorable trip!
