Stayed at the Del Mar from May 11-18 with 5 friends in the age range of late 20s/early 30s.
Immaculate and breathtaking. Definitely worth taking as many pictures as possible of the wildlife and scenic views. Very very clean. Do not feed the animals. And bring some OFF to avoid late night bugs....because they def. bite.
A friend and I stayed in 1526 which was close to the pool on the second floor. Two "queen" beds, a descent sized patio, etc. The room was clean and the maid(s) did a great job daily of restocking the mini fridge, making a few cool towel animals, providing an ample amount of towels, and cleaning the floor which was usually covered in sand. The shower however was a shower/tub combo. There is not a shower head but rather a hose that shoots out the water. Also, there was not a curtain of door so descent chance you could get water on the bathroom floor. This may have to do with having queen beds. The other two rooms reserved had king beds with a shower and no tub.
We hung out mostly by the pool bars which was clean and always attended to. Never saw plastic cups or cigarette butts hanging around. If you swim towards the water falls, the pool does get dirtier at there are most trees and bushes and the leaves commonly fall or blow into the water. Water was very warm and relaxing as well as huge. Never had a problem finding a group of beach chairs.
Again, very clean and clear and pristine. Had drink service the one day on the beach which was really nice. Just tip...and they will keep coming back over and over. It was easy to find beach chairs as well.
This is what I liked best about the resort. The Star Friends are the ones who plan and put on the daily activities. They are goofy, social, and make sure that everyone is having a good time. Between out group, some of us did archery, rifle shooting, soccer, volleyball, beach games, biking, yoga, boccie, etc. They men/women who put on the games are hilarious and I recommend trying at least one game or two so they learn your name. Many of the same people who do the beach/pool activities also perform in the shows as night. These people work and sweat their butts off. Special shout out to Edu and Ishmael who provided the best entertainment and jokes. Also saw the Magic show the one night which was not bad at all. It serves its purpose.
The best booze is at the lobby bars which is where we ended up every night. I actually liked the drinks at the pool. The bartenders will make whatever you want. If they don't put enough liquor in your drinks, then you ask them to "top it off" and they will pour more on top of the drink. No reason to complain about that. The mojitos are fabulous as they have tons of fresh mint available. I also liked how the restaurants and lobby bars had espressos....some times you need a pep at night or in the AM. The only beer we can find on draft was Dos Equis which we soon nicknamed to Dos Sickeees. Pool bar tequila is bottom shelf so just drink more of it. A lot of people also brought their own drinking mugs and tumblers and the bartenders filled them willingly.
This is the only reason I rated the resort a 4 instead of a 5. The breakfast buffets were the best out of all the buffets although how can you screw . I guess I was just sick of buffets 2-3 times a day for 4 days. I had the lunch buffet once which was a smaller version of the dinner buffet. Most of my mid day food came from the beach buffet which was good enough to coat my stomach to allow more alcohol. The dinner buffets were not that extravagant plus food was hardly labeled. A lot of the meats were also really tough on the buffets. Room service was plentiful but it is the same quality of what sits under the heat lamps at the buffet.
The specialty restaurants were pretty good however many of the meats at the Brazilian were flavorless. Id rate it a 5/6 out of a 10. The Japanese and Steakhouses were the best so I gave them a 7/8 out of a 010. My favorite was the Japanese. It is mostly for show however the sushi, miso soup, and stir fry of shrimp, chicken, and beef had lots of flavor. At the Steakhouse I had a tenderloin which was very good. The steakhouse also has a small salad bar with leaf lettuce, not really any veggies, some salads, and cheeses.
I did not buy anything on this trip. The resort has small gift shops in the lobby where a friend proceeded to pay $15 US dollars for a can of OFF...so make sure you bring your own. Also cigarettes are $9 a pack so if you smoke, bring enough to last you. One day we went to 5th Ave in downtown Playa Del Carmen. It was nice to get away from the resort however it was nothing special. Just lots of Mexicans yelling for your business and selling things you can get at the dollar store in America. My one friend bought a wooden penguin wearing a sombrero which the guy wanted $30 which we bartered for $15. The same one was then located at the shops for $4.....laugh! Cigarettes were $4 a pack so much cheaper then at the resort.
We booked through Apple Vacations at at $999 for a week with nonstop flights which is very very hard to beat. I would return because the pros outweighs the cons however I might also want to explore different resorts in the area. All in all, it was a very fun and stress free trip. The staff is amazingly friendly. I do recommend tipping here and there esp. at the bars because they definitely remember you. Again, there is also pool/beach games all day and the nightly entertainment is not bad either.
