“RUN from the time share salespeople!!!”
Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

Our family spent Christmas week at the Mayan Palace in Riviera Maya. The grounds were pretty, the rooms clean and comfortable, beautiful pool and the resort staff was wonderful! However, I doubt I would ever return or recommend this resort to friends. Even though we had a wonderful vacation with our family, our experience with the timeshare reps has left us with bad memories. The timeshare sales people do not leave you alone from the time you check in until you sign on the dotted line!! They tell you that the presentation is only 2 hours. Plan on spending at least 5 hours! We did buy into their Vida Vacation program. However the next day we did go back to cancel. We could cancel, however they kept bringing in other sales people and managers. We finally bought into what they called the Vacation Privileges Club. Our sales person was Fernando Falcon. We came home thinking we had a decent vacation package for the next several years. However, we never received our enrollment package and when we tried to take advantage of some of the benefits, we found out Fernando had lied to our faces!! Do not fall for their lies like we did!
Another thing to be aware of... This is not an all inclusive resort. However, they do have a no cash policy. You give them your credit card information and charge everything to the room. This was fine for our family, but others were saying how easy it is to overspend on food and drinks.
One more bad experience. In the lobby is a counter where you can book tours, etc. We did book one tour to Xel Ha. The counter guy wrote down in US dollars what our cost would be. However, the charge on our credit card was $100 more and it had nothing to do with the exchange rate!! We could not get that corrected either.
I felt like we were robbed twice-once by the time share folks and a second time by the tour agent.
If you do go, be aware!! Remember, there are resorts that are just as nice or better near by!

We just returned from a two week vacation at the Mayan Palace. Let me begin by saying the resort is absolutely beautiful, very clean and the staff are very friendly. That said there are some things that are very disappointing:
- pool water was ice cold the first week we were there
- beach is horrible, lots of rocks and in my opinion a little dangerous
- the cost of food, drinks and the spa is absolutely outrageous
- staff are not very knowledgeable - they know their job only and not able to tell you anything more. We took the Playa Express to Playa del Carmen at a very reasonable cost - beats taking the cab or shuttle with their fixed prices and no negotiating permitted.

This resort is large but the grounds are stunning, with many natural mangrove areas. In fact on walking around we saw some beautiful, and large, Iguanas and a few Salamanda. There are also Crocodiles and Flamingos. We didn't have to exchange a lot of cash as everything you eat, drink, book, buy is all put onto your room bill. And we didn't find anything overly expensive.
Our room was in the Mayan Jungle, overlooking...............the jungle. It was lovely sitting on the balcony in the mornings, with a cup of tea , watching the birds. ( Just in case people are wondering, I always take a kettle, cups, tea and milk away with me, there were no tea/coffee making facilities ) The room and bathroom are large and well equipped and the bed very comfortable.
On our first day we decided to follow the map given to us and walk around the resort. We did get quite lost at times and bumped into many others who were lost as well, but it was fun and we did manage to find our way back to our room. I don't understand why so many people moan about the shuttles, we found they would stop if they saw us walking and allow us to hop on if we wanted to. And why on earth wouldn't you want to walk around the resort ? Nothing was THAT far away.
We ate mainly at Greenbreak as we found the food good and plentiful and the staff friendly and accommodating. Definitely good value, especially happy hour
Unfortunately we had to cut our 2 week holiday short due to a bereavement in the family but the concierge, Fransisco, was very helpful in arranging an early flight home for us and enabling us to stay in our room til 3 on the day we left. This meant that we didn't get to try the other restaurants or any of the other facilities.
We didn't get sucked into the timeshare spiel. Life's too short to waste 5 hours being badgered into buying into the Mayan.
Luckily we had managed to visit Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Playa Del Carmen. All well worth seeing even if it was in the pouring rain.
All in all we loved the Mayan Palace and will certainly go back. The pool area spectacular, the beach much better than other reviews led me to believe, take aqua shoes, the grounds beautiful and all the staff,we met, polite and cheerful.

Just recently stayed at this hotel for 6nigts and all i can say that it was a great stayyyy
only issues as follows
1. breakfast is extremely pricey and usually my favorite part of vacation which at this time we didn't do at $27 a person and we were four people
2. beach is not swimable, to many large rocks to go through (at least 20 feet before you can stand )
3. kids club was great but was not an all day thing like it is in other resorts
4. BIGGEST PROBLEM - NO WIFI !!!! they charge you $100 a week for wifi and it barely works , so if you are a person that will need this think again, i was at the cyber cafe allot of time on my trip

Everything was fabulous. We were treated like Royalty. My only complaint is that it was too far away from shopping etc. The shuttle service was second to none. This is a place for the entire family or for a romantic get away.

I read many of the reviews on trip advisor which helped but I found a lot of the complaints to be magnified. We rented a car (from Cancun car rental and they picked us up at the Mayan and brought us to Playa del Carmen to get the car) since everyone said that we would be in the middle of no where. It is located about 10 miles from Puerto Morales which is a great little town with free wifi in the square great restaurants a great beach and the best snorkeling at Wet Set. You could take a cab from the Mayan. Playa Del Carmen is twice as far but there are cabs and shuttles.
We said no to the presentation and did not get hassled. We decided to make a code for our family to call each other just in case we would get a lot of calls.
Buildings 21 to 10 are along the golf course and a long, long walk to the swimming pools and beach but if you like golf courses and jungle you can stay there and take a tram to the beach but we liked the distance to the pools etc from buildings 1 to 5.
Yes the beds are a little hard but if you have slept in Europe you will be fine. The rooms are extremely large and super clean with turn down service in the evenings complete with candy kisses. You can cook in the rooms but you do have to turn the range on far ahead of time to get it hot. We went to both the Wal-Mart and Mega Store in Playa del Carmen to get supplies. We ate all breakfast in our rooms, some lunches and only one dinner.
The staff were excellent. The best were the activity staff who worked all day to keep everyone entertained. (Helena) Every morning there is free exercise class on the beach at 10 am and in the pool at around noon. Bike trip for adults and activities every day for kids in a covered, enclosed cabana starting at 10 am and every night there is a free activity at 8 pm. You can reserve a cabana through Maria Wisa who is so friendly and will explain that there is no charge for the cabana if you order 350 pesos of food or drinks....easy to do and happy hour starts at 11am why not you have a place for the day to be comfortable and get the kids out of the sun. Which reminds me...there is a doctor in building 7 we used for blistered lips on a 7 year old and an ear infection on a 1 year old. .great service.
The beach does have rock right in front of all the beach chairs and you have to step down to walk in which is not ideal but you can snorkel out to the underwater sunken pottery jars and see a few fish. The bright side is that the kids loved playing in the sand and seeing what was alive in the tide pools. Really the only good snorkeling is at Puerto Morales even though you can walk to the right or left for 10 minutes to reach beaches without rock. If you go to the right just walk through that complex that is boarded up.
If you are going to eat with children I suggest the Moon restaurant on the beach, it is less formal and reasonable. The portion size is good for two people. There is entertainment every night at 9pm but one night there was a stage show that was incredible. Some people said that there was no toilet paper or dish soap and we found that to be not true. We did our dishes so there were never any charges that we did not expect, except a bottle of water that they took off the bill immediately.
We have been to all of the Mayan Palaces and like this one the best.

Room Tip: Rooms in buildings 1 to 5 are close enough to the pool area and beach area to go back and get someth...

We spent 1 week at the Mayan Palace January 18-24. We were in building 2, so very close to the pools and beach. I would recommend requesting a building close like this, as some of them are so far away! The rooms are nice, clean, well maintained, comfortable beds and chairs. The balconies are small, just room to stand, no chairs...the kitchens have quality appliances, no dishwasher or oven however. The pools are clean, as is the beach. You need to walk quite a distance to get to another resort before you can actually walk into the ocean due to the huge amount of rocks. Drinking and eating are very expensive. Drinks are 10.00 each! That is a small plastic glass at the pool, even more at the fancy restaurants. We ate at Gong one evening it was very good, but cost over 100.00 for two people.(we did have wine) the Italian place was good too. The poolside cafe was tasty for a quick lunch, but you can expect to pay at least 20.00 per person. We opted to purchase some items and cook in our room for breakfast. We went to Puerto Morales one day, found a great little place on the beach and spent the whole day there. (4 of us including taxi ride, drinks, 2 meals each for 150.00... Total, that would have been about 400.00 or more at the resort) it was a great day. We enjoyed our time at the Mayan Palace and will return...we actually bought into the timeshare. Overall it is a wonderful place! I can't wait to return when they have the Cirque auditorium finished and the new pools, and the Cirque amusement Park! Just prepare to budget your time and money and you will be more than happy with this resort!
