“we had a good time,food was so,so”
Reviewed November 29, 2010

it was our first trip to the dominican.
we stayed from nov.19-nov 26.
check in was fast and hassle free.
this resort has alot of good, but some bad also.

the good was the grounds are beautiful and the beach is spectacular.
the staff were very friendly and the animation worked hard to keep you entertained.
we had no problem making reservations for the a la carte restaurants at anytime of the day, the day before.

room was out dated,a little small but was clean and served our purpose.
requested a ocean/beach front room and they gave us one.
shower had instant hot water and really good pressure.
room was cleaned everyday before 11.00 am.

the food was so,so.
after a couple of days it started to wear on us,in the buffets it is mass produced and some of it was pretty bland.the staff have a hard time keeping up cleaning off tables so others could be seated.
myself and the kids ended up with mild cases of crampy guts after 2 days and had it most of the time we were there, it came and went. wife was ok and never had it.
dont know if it was different spices or not but a week of eating here was enough.

we didnt like the food at any of the a la carte restaurants.

the drinks suck, very cheap booze at all the pool bars.
beer on tap only served in plastic cups.
juices and some mixes are very very sweet.
only premium drinks at the lobby bar.

this trip didnt cost us alot so,basically we got what we paid for.
its not bad but im sure there are better....for more $$$$.
there are italians everywhere, they can be rude and very loud, and dont much care/respect other hotel guests.

We reserved and prepay for a sea view room two month in advance, when we got to the hotel there was no sea view room available, so we got a different type of room. They promesed a credit for the difference in price, We still wating for it. People at reception were very rude. In the restaurant the food was cold all the time.

My wife and I (both retired) took the red eye from LAX to SDQ so that we could arrive at about 3:00 pm at the resort on 11/2/10. Prearranged SDQ pick up with IBK since we made the resosrt reservations directly with Wyndham and used frequuent flyer miles for the trip. Always try to arrive at trip destinations during mid week to avoid crowded check in.

Arranged round trip with IBK over the internet ($210 RT for two). The site was klugey, but a few e-mails with Bronley bdejesus@ibkservicios.com got the job done. SDQ arrival required a $10 tourist card PP for entry and a seperate line befor going thru imigration. IBK was waiting when we left imigration with our name on a sign. The drive to the resort took about two hours in a 6-8 passenger van with no other passangers. Most of the roads were very good - some parts had mixed pot holes (small and large). Good driver and safe trip.

Check in was a breeze. We were given VIP tags due to either being a Wyndham rewards member or the ocean front room that we stayed in. We were able to reserve the Al a carts for the entire week if we chose and booked the first three available dinners to start. Ate at the Buffet the night of arrival. Both guest services and registration staff spoke good english and very pleasant and helpful to deal with.

Bell hop accompanied us to our room on the third floor ocean front. No elevators, easy walk and climb. The room was clean and refrigerator stocked. Flat screen LCD TV was a suprise (many english speaking channels from US -were able to watch survivor and amazing race). Water pressure and temp was the best. Always had plenty of bottled water to drink and brush teeth. The tap water was not recommended to drink (typical). The balcony was adequate with good view of the ocean and beach through the many palm trees. Beach towles were in the room on arrival and exchanged several times during the week stay. The safe deposit box battery died after the third closure. Maintenance replaced it within 1 hour after visiting the front desk. No bugs were seen in the room other than an occasional mosquito once or twice. Some evening noise due to the annimation programs (bearable and probably the same throughout the entire resort). Had to go to VWDB ( 5 min. walk) to get a late lunch at the snack bar - hot dog was the easiest.

The food at La Yuca was good+ but not exceptional. Breakfast always good if you like fresh eggs prepared to your liking and good fruit. Bacon was served two to three times during the trip. Lunch always had many good choices - pasta station and grill station plus sandwiches and salads. La Terraza buffet had a wider selection for lunch that included french fries (popular). Note: Beef is never a good choice (too tough) in buffets or al a carts at all inclusives in the Caribbean. Chicken was always available and my favorite choice at lunch. We had two dinners at the buffet during our stay and had no complaints. Similar to lunch buffet with a little more upscale selection.

The al a carts were good and all three course meals. La Roca had good selections but food was average in this open air resturant. Service was good and prompt. II Palco ( enclosed) was the best of the al a carts with above average selections well prepared and the best service. The grouper was absolutely the best meal of the trip followed by the Oso Buco the next night. Viva Mexico was better than La Roca and had well prepared Mexican fare. Fajitas and enchalada were prepared well. They have to add a margerita service to become a real mexican resturant. We had reservations to Atlantis, but were Tomas'ed out due to storm wave action. We did not eat at either Bambu not Viva Cafe due to closures/schedule and preference for II Palco.

The bars were great with good service and drinks. Some bars did not have all the ingredients for all drinks. One afternoon there was no soda to be had at any of the bars at the resort. The lobby bar was the best and leas crowded until the week end. It displayed name brands for most of the selections. The Palace bar had lots of activity but maintined good service. There was a coffee bar, some self serve beverage dispensers and limited food (cookies and small sandwiches) available. There is a small bar between the two resorts open during the day that was the least busy and close to the palapa of our choice. Great service and little wait. The Beach bar was always busy but still had adequate service and choices as the Palace bar. Extremely busy during the weekend. House wines were minimally adequate and wine menu selections expensive - just like beef - not the best choice - stick with the bar selections.

Tomas - I watched the NOAA hurricane center for a week prior to the trip to make sure that we were not going to be in the direct path of Tomas. Two days prior to the trip I felt comfortable that we would not see the worst of the storm. The day we arrived the seas were quiet and calm with very little wave action. Wed saw more wave action, but we were able to snorkel, but uncomfortable around the coral due to the surge. Thur, Fri, Sat and Sun were not snorkling days due to visability and moderate wave action. Local beaches here in so cal have much larger surf on a regular basis. people were in the water every day, but not snorkling. Mon was the best day for snorkling and was enjoyed. Tues was our travel out day. The wave action disrupted three resturants for three days - fri, sat and sun. Waves were breaking against the coral and flooding the resturants (Atlantis, la Roca, and la Cafe). They were back in business Monday. Surfing was available on sat and sun. Friday was the windiest and rainest day of the trip and very few people stayed at the beach for any length of time.

The beach was one of the best aspects of the resort. Easy entry anmost anywhere. Parts were elevated above the water by coral drop offs 2-8 ft high. Lots of shells to pick up if interested. never seriously bothered by hawkers on long walks west past the art stores on the beach, past Catalonia and one other resort. Very pretty. Therre was plenty of shade at the beach with palapas and palm trees. Some areas had as much sun as you wanted. Palapa towl drops were necessary if you wanted a specific one for the day. Spent most of the day in the water, reading or walking on the beach. Very relaxing.

Only trip we took was to Tobacalera de Garcia in la Ramona. The cigar factory is the largest in the caribbean with 4700 enployees. A tour can be arranged by sending an e-mai to tour@lapalmascigar.com. Geudy Vargas will reply. The personal tour we had was by Stevens Avila, and was great. The $60 taxi ride was worth it. They make romeo&julite, montecristo to name a few of their brands. Wanted to go to Catalina, but Tomas got in our way.

Take a stroll outside the resort to the shops, etc. Lots of art work and souviners. Tours (1/2 - 1 day) can be arranged at several locations. The coffee shop with free wifi was out of business, but ther was an internet shop along the road if you need access. The resort wifi did not work for me when I had tried. Guest services said they were working on it. I would not plan on having it available unless you see a positive note in a later review. My lap top did not fit into the safe deposit box but remained safe in the closet. There were many shops within the resort to also browse through if you wanted. The eveniong shows and Disco were not our interest so I can not comment on them.

We heard many langueges spoken at the resort and never gave it a second thought. Most resorts in the caribbean have a high mixture languages represented. Ran into at least five goups that spoke English.

All in all this was a great trip that was slightly compromised by hurrican tomas. The resort, staff and facilities were all a great value with no issues to complain about. Would like to return another day to take advantage of clear water and snorkling. We travel alot and never try to go to resorts during peak season when everything is stressed - common sense.

Hope everyone enjoys traveling as well as we do. -

September 4 ~ 12, 2010
We were exhausted from so much fun. It only rained the day we left.
Sailboats we great, 30 minutes at each turn. Available 9am to 6pm except during sailing classes at about 11am.
Try the trapeze too...the most scary part is when you must put both hands on the bar...I laughed at myself.
All the staff were nice, even though we only spoke English, we had no problems.
Food was great at the buffet for breakfast and lunch. The variety was very good, we have nothing but praise for this setup. Each day when we all set at our table, we would look to see what each of us picked out, we taste tested many items from each of our selections.
My favs...french toast, green oranges, hot chocolate, watermelon juice, scrabled eggs, cold milk.
We went to all the reservation required cafes and the Italian gets or vote as the best.
1. Italian
2. Mexican
3. Café at waters edge
We did not like the Oriental, maybe our taste needs that night were just not in line with the food.
There are 6 or 7 resturants there, I don't remember all.
Good thing about the buffet is that it was always available as a backup.
The late night pizza café was tasty too. It opens at 7pm until very late.

There were no bugs to be seen, I really think they must still use DDT down there, as we did not even see any mosquitoes. I did see the guy on a scooter fogging the streets outside the hotel.
Our room was well cleaned each morning, with towel swans to surprise us upon return, each day different style.
The local iguana was friendly as an old house cat.
Immaculate landscaping too.
So many towels each day…maybe the $2 tip we left in room was appreciated more than you think.

Drinks at the poolside bar were nice and convenient, and you could carry drinks to your beach side lounge chair.
September must be an unpopular time, as we had no problems with finding locations on the beach, reservations, taking out the sailboats or waiting in line for most any activity.

Snorkling off the beach was fantastic. Bring some bread from breakfast and see the feeding frenzy underwater.
If you have the need for a camera before your travel, I suggest looking into a waterproof.
We bought a Fuji xp10, and it did so well above and under the water, great special effects too.

Didn’t use the room safe, put valuables in a large suitcase and locked it.

Negatives: Pools close at 6pm. It would have been nice to see an adult only pool open to about 10pm, they probably have reasons based on past history, but the lighted pools sure look inviting after dark.
I did have a little musty smell from the AC, sprayed it with Clorox that we brought with us.
The wifi was about $1 a minute as we paid for 24 hours, but it worked for only the 10 minutes while we were at front desk.

Organized crime: At the aeroport outside Santo Domingo, the Htz rental car agency is the practicing scam artist at its worst. More to it than this, but Htz has lost us as a customer at all locations.

Everywhere else we went, we felt safe. At most all locations for shopping, there were guards in the parking lots. As we drove around the area between Santo Domingo/Bayahide/Punta Cana we enjoyed the freedom of being in our rental car. We never felt unsafe, even at night. We did miss a few turns, but managed to get back on track. There we lots of fuel stops that took both DR $ and USA $. Driving requires being alert and is very active. The motorscooters are everywhere, and they know how to drive. Don’t feel threatened by their passing or getting in front of you at red lights. They speed off way before you will. You passing them again as you reach speed is expected. Tailgating is normal by all. It is to your advantage to have a small car to maneuver thru traffic. Yes we saw a few stray cows and goats, and your windshield will be cleaned at red lights if you are 1st or 2nd in line.
I see much construction on large future highways underway, in a few years driving in DR will be vastly improved. And it looked like a few shopping centers will soon be opening.

We walked to the other resorts nearby, all seemed excellent choices.
The negatives about this resort had us worried, but all turned out to be false in our case.

Hi,
We're used to go to resorts at the Dominican Republic but none with this poor quality.
The room was small and old. The best to say about it was that there was hot water right away.
At the bars, drinks were often not available. I'm not a full time drinker but it just kept happening that when I asked for something as simple as a beer they never had it.
Food and drinks were of very poor quality.
Beach was nice though.
No pool bar at any pool.
I suppose they will answer as usually with the "sorry that we did not meet your expectations" and this will be absolutely right. It surely did not!!

We had a great time, food was very good rooms very good etc etc.
Beautiful beach plenty to do would highly recommend.Sure 90% of the guests were Italian we got along great with everybody and made some great friends.I am from England originally and my wife American so do not be put off by the negatives of people
who complain about peoples different mannerisms around the world.Alot of British and Americans leave alot to desire when travelling.Go have a good time!

We read the reviews before we go on our trips and find them to be helpful. This trip was no different. We used a airport transfer to take us to our resort and back. Sun Excursion the cost was about $80 total for the both of us, and they had great service, on time, very friendly and helpful. The e-mail for them superturlrm@turissimo.com.
Our reservations were at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach. Just like the reviews read the front desk was not very friendly and did not make you feel welcomed. The Bellboy took us up to our room and told us there are only about 2% Americans 85% Italians and the rest are German. We thought not a problem and then he took us to our room. The room was clean but very plain with a small television that only would get two channels( not a problem we were there for the water, beach and fun). When we first enter the room he turn on the air conditioning and as soon as he left it started to blow out hot air. lol
We decided to go over to the Viva Wyndham Dominiucus Palace and asked if we could see one of there rooms. The room seemed a little more updated with a flat screen television and we had a beautiful front ocean view and the cost to move was minimal. The walls are very thin and you can hear the people in the next room like they are there with you. Not bad and at times funny:) The front desk was a little friendlier, so we did move to the Palace.
The food was plenty, but like all the reviews before we went, are like most all-inclusive resorts. One night we did decided to pay the extra $20 a person and go to their fine dining at the Atlantis. It was no better than the La Roca right next to it and there was no extra charge at the La Roca.
The scuba Diving was good. The water was clear and warm. The Dive master was good and there were lots of fish and life.
The Spa was not very good and I wished I had just saved my money.
Something did not seem right and I'm not sure what it was exactly. Maybe because we were Americans, but I think if I should go back to this island, I would pick a resort that didn't have a review that read AMERICAS BEWARE!
