“Birthday Present for My Husband”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

I took my husband on this trip to celebrate his 30th birthday from April 4th-9th. The grounds are immaculate and very well kept. Our room had a few hiccups such as the toilet would run non stop unless you jiggled the handle and pushed it up a bit and the lock for the door got stuck so we couldn't shut our door without it blowing back open but the staff resolved that IMMEDIATELY! Staff was very attentive and always smiling and willing to help. The food is okay nothing too special, I would definitely try to eat at the restaurants every night instead if at all possible. The beach is breath taking and the snorkeling is even better! We saw all sorts of fish and even an eel. We made it a habit to try snorkeling every day since you were bound to see something different each time. Also, there is a little bar close to the beach where they make nutella filled crepes and other types as well which are fantastic. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking if you sit near the pier or on the beach facing the lighthouse bar.

We originally booked the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Resort and were transfered to the Catalonia. At first we hate the idea of a transfer, but it paid of afterall.
The hotel is amazing, everything works just fine. The staff couldnt have been friendlier, courteous and more prepared to help us anytime.
The food and drinks were great. Nothing special about those 3 extra restaurants, but the buffet is more than ideal in any ocasion. Dont worry about drinking the water, using ice in your drinks or about the cups used to serve them, everything is spotless clean!
We had an outstanding relaxing experience. We stayed for 5 nights and loved every minute of it.
Thank you Catalonia for our experience, keep the good job and good workers like Miguelin at Rodeo Steakhouse, Guerina at the Boutique, Jason, Jonathan, Juliana, Francisca, Yoselyn, Flor at the concierge and so many other around the complex. We loved them all.

Room Tip: get the Superior rooms on the second floors.

Not one of my favorites on the island. Food was fair and commercial, grounds were relatively clean, beach, not as most other hotels and disappointing for Bayahibe.

Not someplace I would return to. Liquors were not top shelf and very commercial. Had to double check what I was drinking!

Dear guest,

thank you for the review of our hotel on Trip Advisor.

We regret not having been able to totally fulfill your expectations and we would like to ensure you that we take all your comments very seriously and share them with our staff in order to improve.

Regarding your comments about the quality of our liquors, we have a variety of imported drinks in our bars such as J&B, Johnny Walker, Stolichnaya vodka, etc., which are part of the all inclusive package.

We appreciate you nice comments about our grounds.

We hope to have another chance to serve you.

Yours sincerely,
Roberto Iglesias.

Just got back from DR and what a wonderful vacation it has turned out to be. Read ALL reviews and was very nervous before getting there. My original booking at cheapcarribbean.com had us stay at Viva Wyndham Dominicus, and once upon arrival we were told about an overbooking problem. Just like so many other reviews. Thus we were sent to Catalonia Gran Dominicus. What a treat for us! The staff is super friendly. If you speak a little spanish, it will make them even friendlier. Charming accommodations. Villa-like buildings. Sure it's no Four Seasons, but then again, you are NOT paying for one, so you should NOT expect to be in one! Comfortable bed, AC, hot shower, mini fridge, TV with few english channels. Enough for spending some sleep-time. Beach is beautiful. Pool is awesome. Many levels of depth. Bars with all sorts of beverages throughout. Go early to save shaded space near beach. A common practice in any resort. Food is actually pretty good for buffet. It is not always the same. Similar, but always changing. Chefs are always grilling, cooking fish, meat, pasta. Not gourmet, but good enough. Drinks are always good. Service is excellent. Most guests are from Europe. Very international. Lots of activities throughout the day. Many activities specifically catered for French or Italian guests.ONLY negative was the annoying hotel staff that tries to sell time shares. They were very persistent. Many of them. Though they are very friendly and nice, even after you refuse their offer. We would go back in a heartbeat even if it has become such a nuisance to be inside an airport or airplane in the US, and the car ride to the hotel is almost 2 hrs long. Just remember that you are NO LONGER in the US and that time has a different pace here. Don't take everything so seriously. Relax and enjoy.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet. Even if you get 1st floor, there is a garden separating for privacy, albeit not...

My husband and I spent a week at the Catalonia Gran Dominicus during the first days of April 2014. All the people at the hotel are very friendly and try to do their best to make your stay unforgettable. The hotel is like a huge villa, with several small buildings that gave the impression of old spanish houses and surrounded by beautiful gardens with plenty of palm-trees and other trees, very nice! The rooms are clean and spacious, but as somebody wrote in his review, bathrooms are a little outdated. Internet service is intermittent, so if by any reason you need to do face-time or check your e-mail constantly, it may be a little problematic.
There are several restaurants, the main one serves the buffet, which actually is very good! there is a huge selection of fruits, Dominican food, fish and...Italian pasta!! (you have to try it, the Italian cook is excellent!). There are other 3 specialty restaurants: Tex-mex, Mexican and Italian. All of them are really nice and the service is impeccable.
There is a very nice and big pool, but obviously, most of the people want to stay at the beach, so at times, it may be difficult to find a spot with some shade. The beach is... beautiful!!! clean, peaceful, no vendors, and you can get drinks at the beach bar.
Overall it was a very, very nice experience and I congratulate all the staff for their efforts to provide a quality service with latino flavor.

Room Tip: There are up-graded rooms in a section called 'Privileged'. They are closer to the beach. Ou...

We spent one week at the Catalonia Grand Dominicus Resort in La Ramona the end of March 2014. We were two English-speaking couples. This resort draws a huge clientele from Italy, France and Germany, so we found ourselves in a minority of English speakers. Everyone is identified by language with a coloured bracelet, making it easy for staff to address you in your native tongue. Language was not a problem at this resort because all the staff that is employed to interact with clients is all very fluent in numerous languages. All other support staff was unilingual Spanish speaking. In general, the hotel staff is very friendly, cheerful and helpful.

The resort - The resort is a superb 4 star hotel with about 415 rooms. The rooms are clean and perfectly adequate. The bathrooms in the rooms are a bit old and could do with updating, but in the Privileged Section, I think this has been done. The resort caters to all groups, families, and couples. It doesn’t appear to be a student party place. The grounds are immaculately kept with all kinds of interesting trees and flowering bushes.

Privileged section - There is a privileged section for rooms, in the buffet eating area and on the beach. The privileged rooms are closer to the beach and updated, but having a privileged section for the buffet and beach areas doesn’t really make sense, but I guess it makes some people feel special.

Internet - There is free Wi-Fi access, though sporadic at times, in all parts of the resort. There is also a computer room available.

Restaurants - The resort has a buffet for breakfast, lunch and supper. There were 3 theme restaurants (Italian, Mexico and Texan) that you could go to on a first come first serve basis. The selection of food in the buffet was large and they had two specialty sections, one Italian and one Dominican Republican. All the food we had whether in the buffet or the restaurants was really quite good. I found that I ate more food that what I usually do at home; I wanted to try everything.

Pool - The swimming pool at this resort is huge with areas for everyone. There is a very shallow part for young kids, a section for water polo, a section to swim lengths and a deep section for those wanting to try the free scuba diving try-out. The pool is very clean and well kept.

Bar - There is a central bar that serves the local beer, Presidente on tap as well as a good selection of cocktails. The drink to try is Mamajuana, a drink from the Dominican Republic that is concocted by allowing rum, red wine and honey to soak in a bottle with tree bark and herbs. There is a beach bar that also has a section that serves up freshly made crepes.

Entertainment - Evening entertainment starts at the central bar with a mini disco for the very young kids led by the animators. It was fun to watch. Afterwards, a DJ played music for all who wanted to dance (and quite a few people did). The animators are there to lead the dances and invited guests to dance with them. This was followed by a show at the amphitheatre nearby. The show was enjoyed in general, but I found it very amateurish. After the show, you could go to the Disco for more fun and music.

Bugs - In general, there are very few insects, so sitting out in the evening is very comfortable. Watch out for the tiny ants found in the sand at the beach. They will come out in hordes if you have any food lying around and they will bite you also. Putting on sunscreen seems to provide enough of a barrier and a deterrent to prevent bites.

Wildlife - The local bird, the palmchat is everywhere. There are humming birds, woodpeckers, frigate birds, swallows, small hawks, seagulls and pelicans for entertainment also. Look for small geckos, land snails and crabs on any rocky outcrops by the beach.

Beach – Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. There is a bit of a decline to get down to the main beach area, but there are steps all along to ease the way. There is a lot of shade on the beach, either with natural palm trees or constructed shade areas and lots of available lounge chairs. There are 5 main resorts along this stretch, so it makes for nice long walks along the beach.
On either side of this resort there are public beaches. There are also huts selling local souvenirs and trinkets. When you walk along the beach past these shops, you are accosted by the vendors inviting you to come and spend your money. For this reason, I did not even visit these huts. Too pushy. They don’t seem to realize that in general, today, people are shoppers and know how to shop. If they would have just left me alone, I would have gladly strolled through their set-up and perhaps bought myself a few souvenirs.

Beach entertainment – The staff at the resort are quite active in interacting with the guests. There were dancing lessons on the beach, all kinds of games and water exercises to participate in. There is a beachside information booth for booking the use of kayaks, body boards, smaller snorkeling excursions, sailboards, parasailing etc. etc. etc.

Snorkeling - Our group did quite a bit of snorkelling right off of the resort beach. There is a man-made reef set up that acts as a wave breaker where you can see quite a few fish. Just 2 resorts down the beach, we found a natural rock outcropping along part of the beach by Viva Wyndham Resort. We went there a few times to snorkel where there was more natural coral reef, home to all kinds of fish (angle, trumpet head, sting ray, puffer, grouper). Make sure you bring your own snorkeling equipment and water shoes. There are sea urchins, which are not pleasant to step on. Water shoes are not needed for general swimming in the ocean if you don't venture out into the reef area.

Excursions - There are excursions available to book at the resort for all interests, whether it is a Safari tour, a historic tour through San Domingo, a snorkeling excursion on a catamaran/speed boat etc. etc. etc. All appear quite good.

During our stay, no one in our group got sick, but on return, a couple of us had sore throats and a couple of days of cleaning out the digestive system. Was this due to catching something whist in the midst of a lot of people either in the airport, on the planes or at the resort? I don’t know, but it wasn’t severe enough to cause a problem.

We booked our flight through Sunwing and landed at Punta Cana. The bus transport to La Ramona and our resort is now served by a new highway and only takes about 45 minutes. The Dominican Republic has a $10 entrance fee and a $20 exit fee payable in US cash only.

In all, I found this hotel a real gem, a fantastic hidden treasure and would return.

Let me begin by saying i have absolutely no idea why this place would get bad reviews because we have had nothing but a positive experience. Today is our last day here and i felt the need to post even before heading out. We began our vacation by being upgraded for free, room is nice and clean. We briefly had an issue with the safe, resolved in less than 10 mins. All the staff is great from reception to even the maintenance people, i fluently speak spanish so no language barrier for me and did not see anyone else having a problem either. Staff speaks many different languages and everyone seems to be able to communicate just fine even when there are limitations. I traveled with a handicap person, 2nd day in...the wheel on the wheelchair popped, we called front desk they sent someone to our location and they were able to take, fix and return the tire. This saved our whole vaca. Everyone was very accomodating to our needs, you could even call front desk to get a golf cart to drive us where we needed to go. Food, hit or miss sometimes but you can always find something that is delish. Btw free wifi dk if it is bc of upgrade or not but it is great to have, doesnt always work great but more than serves its purpose. Drinks could be stronger but the bartenders do try their best. Yes, sometimes there is a wait but never long, be patient, you are on vaca. As for the smoking and topless women...they must come in the same season as the rude employees that others encountered bc we did not find anything out of the norm. Everyone was clothed fully and i had to purposely look to find a smoker. The beach is beautiful but there is a huge drop to get to it, there are steps down as well as seating on the ledge if you do not want or cant venture all the way to the way down to the water. The hotel is not large which is a plus, we had our bearings the first day. We can no longer travel to the larger resorts and feel that this could be our new vaca spot. We are def returning and bringing others, thats is how great this place is. Dont believe the bad reviews, i do not know where they were but it for sure was not here. Please be nice to the employees, always tip and thank them for their services, they work hard to make this place great, a simple hello or thank you goes a long way.
