“Wonderful place for peaceful holidays”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

My husband and I were staying at Gran Dominicus in October 2011. We had really great time, the surroundings are amazing. The choice and quality of food is of the highest standard as well as the choice of drinks (we loved Cuba Libre and Mojito). The service is great. Everything in and around the hotel is very well mantained and clean. We spent most of our stay on the beach which is quite wide and really nice, but we also enjoyed the swimming pool very much. We also bought two additional trips from the hotel rep. We went to Saona Island and to Santo Domingo. The excursions were well organised and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. ;) And finally - the animation team - they are really awesome, thanks to them we enjoyed our holidays even better. All in all, it's a great place for holiday and we hope to come back there sooner or later.

We had a wonderful vacation, the service was excellent and the lay-out of the resort is really cozy, everything is nearby. The place is neither too big nor too small and you feel right at home. Our renovated room ( privilege) was spacious and very close to the pool area.
We appreciated the lush gardens, and the stunning beach area lined with palm trees let you get a glimpse of the sea.
Upon our late arrival an array of just prepared dishes were waiting for us. Thanks to Omar who greeted us with various dishes. A great thank to the chef Ramon and Rafael that were a great at taking care of my wife who has a celiac condition. The animation team was great and thanks to all the girls and guys and especially Natalia who show me the basic of the meringue.

Room Tip: If you are the type to go to bed early you want to pick a room not to close to the pool area since i...

I have been several times at the Gran Dominicus resort. The beach is of white sand, clean. Well maintained, however, I suggest to upgrade to the executive rooms are they aphave recently been re,odeled and are closer to the beach, restaurants and main area. Staff is attentive and animation team great

Room Tip: Book the executive / preferred room for a an extra amount. It is worth it

We loved all four days of our stay there (including the first three days without luggage left by AirFrance in Paris, afterall five hours are not enough to move them from one plane to another).
Fortunatelly we were able to buy swim-suits, some clothes and sun cream in shops in the hotel.

We want to thank once more especially Ekaterina and Braulio at Privileged Concierge, who were very helpful and after a lot of calls in Spanish to a lot of different numbers were able to locate our luggage (lost by AirFrance) and eventually get them to the hotel.

Location, beach and swimming-pool as well as choice of restaurants and activities were perfect. We were less lucky with the room, which was located next to a service road. The room was noisy especially during delivery hours. Otherwise the room was spacious and clean, our kingsize bed was comfortable, roomy closets (not that we had any use of them as AirFrance...you know:-)) with extra blankets, cleaning service was excelent.

The choice, quality and amout of food was excelent, wine was good, fresh juices in the morning were great. We usually ate in the main Taino restaurant, but we also liked Terrace and Steak house. Crepes (and mojitos and caipirinhas:-)) from the beach creperie were lovely.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Privilege room was worth the money:-)

i never went on vacation to an all inclusive except club med.
dominican rep. does not get a good rap in the UNITED states and is a very cheap destination for europeans. i had friends from paris who moved there and why not try since mexico became so expensive.
we took the upgrade at the hotel. they booked exactly what i asked..no far from restaurant and quiet.
the public was interesting, very european, very mixed . i speak french but english was not widely spoken.
the staff was incredibly happy and helpful.
the beach was paradise although the waves were a little wilder then expected.
the food was incredible..spanish chef. Many vegies...great quality. no line/
bar served good drinks brand name. weather was perfect.
great hotel 3 hours and half from NY city!

We just got back (Feb 28-March 7-2013)

I will recommand this hotel, for people with kids, if you are looking for a young party hotel, this hotel is not for you.
Most of the travellers are french canadian, or french from Europe. Few English people also.
This hotel was sold out when we were there, and it was not busy. the complex has 400 rooms. Standard room or OK, but for the price, you should up grade to privilge, we did.

Room Privilege: Really good size, lots of closet, mini fridge, hair dryer(works great) good size shower, safe, coffee machine and 4 bottles of water every day. We had hot water, but you have to leave it open for a good 5 minutes before the hot water comes out. Air Conditionning was not strong, but enough to cool us off. Really clean, and no bugs and a lots of tv chanel. lots of pillows and 2 extra heavy blankets. Wi Fi, dont work all the time, but with the privilege status you can use the free computer, with champagne !! ;)

Beach: Are great, lots of chairs, you dont have to fight for one ... Water really salty and warm, clear, and you can see nice tropical fish by the rope/buoy. Beach towels, never had any issues, and nobody steale towels ahahahah !

Food: Was surprise, the food was really good and more taste than Cuba. Kids were really happy they had Heinz Ketchup and mustard, buffet was really good and an excellent varity of food. Red and white wine not the greatest at the buffet, get your wine at the main bar, different kind and way much better.

A la carte: Italien resto; was really good, Steak house: was ok, but our favorite was the Mexicain !!!!! we did not try the privilege resto at night, only during the day, they had nice club house for lunch !

Creperie: Must try, really good pancakes, and for you Canadian people bring your maple sirop ! we did !!!!

Activities: same everyday: Volleyball, Tennis table, Darts, exercise on the beach or pool.

Night Animation: thats my only negative point, they could have better show, but the Michael Jackson one is really good !

Kids Club: we did not use it but have to say, for the little one I was really impressed by the way its organized and how much the kids have fun !

Pool: Excellent, divided by 4 section how deep it is, really good temperature also.

They have a pool table ... they should have more ... the wait can be long.
About 8 boutiques to shop also at the hotel

Staff: Excellent, lots of them speek many languages; spanish, french, english, german ....

The SPA: really good and profesionnal, and yes they do braids for the little one !!!

Have a little market on the beach, but I suggest you walk 10 minutes on the beach toward the light house and go walk in the town of Dominicus, way much cheaper price, really safe, lots of corners stores (so they dont bug you) but a lots of little shop too .... worth the walk, dont be scare and go look, really good cigar shop in Dominicus too, and you can drink your presidente beer in the street ! brings dog treats with you, the dogs were going crazy about them !

For Tours we did book on line with Pro Excursions tours (Own by Canadian people)

Overhall, really good hotel for family, a great time ! good food, excellent weather ! (+30)

Please contact me if you have any question in English or En Francais pour les questions !

Room Tip: Reserve a Privilege Room

My husband & I are not all-inclusive types. We like to rent a car & explore on our own. However, we decided to try the Catalonia Gran Dominicus, since we only had 4 nights for our first visit to DR, and there really didn't appear to be any other option in the Santo Domingo area.

We paid around $100 extra for the upgrade to the resort's "Privileged" status. I had my doubts about doing this, but it turned out to be worth the nominal increase. We were given a very nice renovated room w/king bed in an excellent location close to the pool & beach. Other benefits: you can eat at the a la carte restaurants for 2 nights, plus 1 night and unlimited lunches at the privileged-only Terrace restaurant by the beach.

Restaurants:
Italian (La Toscana): lovely, open air setting. My dinner (grouper) was delicious. Husband had a pork dish, which he said was just OK. They serve only beer & wine (no cocktails) at the restaurants.

Steak House: Husband really enjoyed his soup & steak. My salad was iceberg, rather blah. My mahi tasted off, so I had chicken instead. Didn't try the Mexican (Mariachi). Both the steak house & Mexican are totally enclosed, so don't have a very nice atmosphere. Different restaurants are open various nights & closed others, so you have to ask.

Taino (buffet). Ate here every day for breakfast & once for dinner. Dinner we had fish grilled to order. Lots of variety, and food was surprisingly good. I loved the crossants.

Service at all the restaurants is pleasant & excellent, from the hostess to the servers. Privileged guests sit in special area near open air at Taino.

The beach & grounds are beautiful & well maintained. However, if you like shade, you will have to get your towels out on lounge chairs on the beach quite early. I dashed out at 7:45 one morning and still couldn't snag a desired palapa close to the ocean.

We used the sea kayak a couple of times, which was fun. There is no extra charge. Also took a short excursion from the dive shop, $25/person. We were taken 10 minutes down the beach in a small motor boat to snorkel. Perfect for us, since we had such a short time at the hotel.

Drinks: Excellent. I preferred the margaritas at the beach/creperie bar, where the crepes make a nice afternoon snack. The larger pool area bar has excellent capucinos.

Misc.: We booked transportation (through the hotel) from Santo Domingo airport. $70/person round trip. Transport was in air conditioned van. On time, good service.
Around 90% of the guests at the resort were French, very few Americans. I speak French, so this was interesting for me. Age range of guests included some young couples, older couples and families. All the children were well behaved. (Perhaps because not American? Sorry, we are American).

Overall, a lovely time!

Room Tip: Worth paying a bit more to get a renovated "privilege" room.
