Great place! So great views! Romantic place....but also good for families with kids.
We went there for our honeymoon. And we loved it.
The room was nice...with great view through the window. Everything was clean.
The food was great, with lot of different fresh made juices, ice creams....Everyone could find something for their taste. I am vegetarian - and I could find a lot of tasty food, so did my husband who is not a vegetarian. Also restaurants were excelent, we tryed all.
The pools were great, also free time activities, the staff would organize people for soccer, basketball, dancing near the Caribbean Sea...and a aerobics in the sea!
Also animations were great, we loved Michael Jackson night!
There is also a great place for kids to play!
And this place has got a great professional photographer, who took so good pictures of as that it was hard not to buy them...but they were worth each euro!
I also went to ayurvedic massage - it was very good, so relaxing!
They also have got shop inside and around the sea you would find some local people (I guess) selling souvenirs, so everyone can buy a nice and quite cheap things to bring home for great memories or presents to friends!
We loved this place!

There were mostly people form Italy, but we liked it, as we are from Baltic States.
Staff could speak English very good!

We have just returned from vacation at Catalonia and I must say it was a little paradise indeed. Starting from the accommodation, through sandy beach and crystalline clear water, beautiful and well trimmed gardens surrounding and leaning through the complex, finishing with kindness of all staff and variety of entertainment during the day and in the evening time.

We were travelling with a kid of 1,5years and the beach as well as the hotel pool were a great place to spend almost whole day. The sea water is clear, warm and not that steep when entering thus great for kids too. Pool is large, divided into various parts, also for kids with depth of between 20-40cm only. Standard rooms are nice, although the overall ambiance slightly depends on area you are located in, as those close to the reception are rather noisy due to a nearby power plant situated at the garden of neighbouring Iberostar hotel. the reception was kind to move us to another room which we really enjoyed.

Restaurant meals are quite ok, although often repeating, but I enjoyed them. Dinners are of different cuisine, theme, every evening. There is also a pizzeria, mexican and a steak restaurant within the complex, included within your stay at Catalonia. variety of meals at pizzeria is fine, in comparison to steak restaurant which I did not enjoy that much.
a creperie is available during day time too, right on the beach.

Evening shows are amazing, the animation team is very gifted and I was myself really amazed by the performances I had a chance to see. in the evening time, shortly after 8pm, also discos for kids take place and I must confess the animation team in charge of the mini club was able to entertain not just the little ones but the parents too :)

Most of the guests were French speakers, among other nationalities you meet in large groups there are also Germans, Canadians and Italians.

Well, can really recommend this hotel, which fulfills the 4star rating and in overall exceeded our expectations. Dominicus beach on which the hotel is located is very clean and nice (also thanks to hotel staff that every morning cleans it).

Thumbs up for the hotel staff (and the Dominican republic - Bayahibe region climate and nature too) for having made our stay an unforgettable experience!

Returning to Catalonia Gran Dominicus after 4 years for our 20th anniversary.
I would like to thank Senior Ivan Cunillera and his staff for making our vacation unforgettable.
We booked trough Nolitours and we are a bit surprised by the higher prices charged all over DR and Mexico. On site I was told DR is following Mexico prices and due to the “end of the world” Mexico got a high interest this winter. Therefore they pushed the prices up. This year their catalogue price was $1500 but you can get a last minute for $851.

As everyone is saying, CGD is promoting their Privileged rooms. They are renovated like a 5* and you get few other benefits. Indeed the upgraded rooms are nice but if you think you want to go that way you should pay for the extra comfort when you make your booking. $12 per pers per night online versus $20 per pers on site.
In my opinion if you pay the extra $ you can easily get a 5* resort to begin with.

Choosing Bayahibe versus Punta Cana it is worth it if you are going there for the calm sea. We have been to Punta Cana and we wouldn’t to go back there. At Bayahibe you don’t take chances, the Caribbean Sea is calm all year long. If you are a swimming pool person … you can go anywhere. Even YMCA has nice swimming pools 

I was disappointed to learn CGD lost the contract with the Ventura Italian tour operator. They used to have an Italian chef and a ton of Italian animators. Yet, the food was very good and their wood burning pizza is still a delight.

The beach is being degraded by the hurricanes and the management should look at it.

It was a nice upgrade to have WiFi in the most parts of the resort, another hot spot by the central bar would be appreciated by everyone.

Monika, the chief concierge tried her best to make our anniversary evening special and we would like to thank her this way,

We tried the ocean kayaks and I found them outdated. Despite the calm water we had to concentrate on keeping our balance instead of enjoying the ride. No more speed boats and parasailing as they used to have 4 years ago. 6 days out of 7 we had only one hobie cat. Be aware they’ll charge you $30 for 30min training if you don’t know how to use the hobie cat. Due to high demand you should book it as soon as you arrive for the desired period.

Snorkelling around the concrete bells is much better than last time; you can actually see more colored fish than on the Catalina snorkelling trip.

Stay away of Nolitour offers for Catalina and Saona islands trips, instead, book it trough Gri Gri diver center sales persons. Frankling is a great sales person. Be aware that you can get a better price if you are a large group. $50 for Catalina and $60 for Saona based on 6 people. A $5 discount.

The resort is full of French and German tourists, some Ontarians and a bit more Quebecois. We met a couple who didn’t enjoy their stay and they made me understand why some people write bad reviews. This kind of people forget they come to a Central American country and they get really disappointed English is not a fluent spoken language. Premium beer is not an option for them and they had no clue what was served at the main buffet.

The lack of Latino music on the beach and around the entire resort is to be blamed on the German tourists who want to relax. Guys, choose a sanatorium next time!!!

As an alternative for their romantic lobster dinner we were advised to go to the Bamboo Restaurant in Bayahibe. Taxi is included both ways and a fresh lobster dinner goes for $25 instead of $40 on the resort. The French hosts from the Bamboo have a divers menu I highly recommended. Drinks, dinner and desert cost us $50 per person.

The AC was quieter on the upgraded rooms. Not the same for the old ones. Our thermostat wasn't shuting down the AC and two technicians could not see something was wrong with it.

Room Tip: pay for your priveleged room at the time you book you vacation instead of paying more when you get on site

Resort is a smaller one. The rooms are nice, the grounds are beautiful. There is not a lot to do here though. There is a jacuzzi tub - with no heater, food is mediocre at best. The gym is small & not well cared for. To use any of the specialty restaurants, you are required to show a voucher & you are only able to visit specialty restaurants a maximum of 4 times during your stay! If the fridge/mini bar is not completely empty each morning, it will not be replenished. They will not stock it with what you request & by the way, the mini bar consists of 2 cans of beer. There is no restocking of toiletries, Internet service is very hit & miss, a/c won't go any cooler than 23 degrees Celsius. They offered to move us to the Catalonia Bavaro Beach each day for the first four days. We were finally moved on day six after numerous meetings, conversations, discussions, etc. What a waste of vacation time! This would be a good resort to go to if you are looking for quiet & if you are content to just stay on the resort grounds relaxing.

Stayed here in May of 2012. Going during slow season meant getting a free room upgrade and no waits for anything. I tried to talk my boyfriend into an all inclusive vacation and he was always against it - after he went here we booked a vacation at another Catalonia at his encouragement for this May! Will definitely be coming back to Catalonia La Romana as well.

The customer service was always great, everyone greets you with a smile and is willing to help with whatever you need.

The food was fantastic, though we weren't big fans of the steak house which other people loved. Don't miss Dominican night at the buffet! The enchiladas in mole sauce at the Mexican restaurant were delicious. Also crepes on the beach are a must, and a great snack to have throughout the day. Many times a day. :)

The room - We had one upgrade above standard (below privilege) and it was perfect, no need to update to privilege for us, though we didn't spend much time in the room. Our room was always clean, had fresh towels and great towel animals.

Drinks - Always available and generally strong. They offer a great drink menu if you don't know what you want. The two must haves are the mamajuana (Dominican Rum, wine and spices) and the Coco Loco (coconut, rum, etc.) The drink of the day was always good too.

The beach is beautiful and in May we never had to fight for a chair. There's always music and entertainment available as well. The pool was good too and never too crowded.

Entertainment - They had a very fun animation team and comedy and dance shows every night. At the bar sometimes they offer dance lessons as well.

Though this isn't a 5 star resort, it had everything we needed and more. If you find a good price, don't think twice about booking!
