“Fantastic Honeymoon”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

We stayed at Catalonia from 10/22-10/29. We upgraded to a preferred room and it was worth it. The resort is absolutely beautiful. The beach is great and the staff are outstanding. Food was great we loved the variety and themes each night. They offer a lot of activities and diving from the resort. We loved our stay and will recommend the resort. Thank you to all the staff we had a great time. We also loved the area and the water is amazing and clear.

Room Tip: get a preferred room it is well worth it

I've posted before on Tripadviser before and have been thanked by travelers! I must state my wonderful wife and I have traveled to many islands in the carribean..with that said I will only give "the truth" in this review!

Transfer to/from
We flew into SDQ and traveled about 1-1/2 hours to the resort.. Our driver did not speak a lot of English as expected. The traffic in the towns along the way were very busy, with aggressive drivers! Our driver avoided a accident and even stopped to see if anybody was hurt!
From the resort to LRM we had a full size bus! This was very cool and the driver was great.

Front Desk
Checking in was a breeze, and our room was ugraded to "Privleged" by our travel agent. This means. You will receive a little more for your money, I/e beach towels in room, hair dryer ect ect.
Checking out went fine also. We settled our bill with-in minutes.

The Room
Our Room maid did a great job, the room was cleaned by 1 pm everyday. She always smiled. Room was updated and very nice!!

Pool
The pool is were we set up base for the day. Plenty of chairs, even a 9 am. The pool was a older pool, it may have needed to be touched up with paint but no other problems with it. It had a great varieties of depths. Were we sat was with the beach just steps away! The main/beach bars are located close by.

Beach
The beach was ok! Rocks/stones
were a problem. We figured out to go in the ocean directly in front of the beach restaurant there the rocks were not "to bad". The beach was a little different.. It was not a long flat beach, but a hilly one. The waves were different almost everyday, that made it fun. Not one our favorite beaches at all!

Resturants
I really don't have anything good to say!!! The food was always over cooked/old/reused! Tempurture of the food u have to watch out for.
Make sure hot food is hot, and the cold food cold.
The egg station cook made eggs look like a work of art and he took his time doing it, there just eggs cook them....
The Mexican/Beef resurants were not that good, the problem we had was it smelled awful of mold and must. I looked one afternoon to see why this was--- the thachted roof was black and moldy!!!
Italian restaurant was good the first nite, after that it just went down hill!!
(to eat at the the specialty rest. U have to present meal ticket u get at check-in)

Staff
Once they figured out we were from the USA they became cold towards us!! Whatever they thought of my wife and I, we made a extra effort to be nice... Did it work? Maybe, maybe not. We were the "outsiders for sure!"
Oh yea maybe it was the month we went (October) but we were the only Americans there for the first 6 days of our vacation, kind of a uneasy feeling..

Grounds
Perfect

Hotel
We loved the laid back feeling of the
it. Shorts-sandals at supper,loved it
Two storied Mexican style hotel, very nice!

Tips
You can get extra meal tickets at the consiyer office, just ask them.
Take a walk to the Iberostar hotel next door it has a nicer beach!!
Free diving lessons at pool side is cool!!
Take a tour to the to Saona isle/the
starfish national park. The water at the park is top 2 we ever swam in!!
Thanks for reading

Dear Guest,

First of all we would like to thank you for your comments

We appreciate you nice comments about our check in, room maid, perfect grounds, etc...

On the other hand we will work in order to improve our restaurant menus and we regret about your outsider feeling. Although we have more visitors from other nationalities, Americans are very valued customers for us and we are expecting lots of visitors from US next winter.

We look forward to welcome you in the future

Kind Regards,

My wife and I went to the Catalonia for our 35th Anniversity and it was a wonderful time they treated us like we were Kings and Queens. Our room was very nice and big the bed was super comfortable. The staff from the time we got there till the time we left could not do enough for us. The food and Drinks were great the Steak house and Mexican Rest were wonderful. We would go back in a New York minute . Please throw out the Bad reviews people have written about this resort it was a great vacations and I don't know how anyone could complain about anything at this resort.

We are Americans that lived in the DR about 23 years ago for many years. First off, we speak spanish so that wasn't a problem. We are well acquainted with the Domincan people and the way of life down there. We have visited the DR often, almost every year since we moved back to the states and usually stay at the Wyndham just for the beach and the value of a cheap all inclusive in a country we love.
We flew into La Romana airport to avoid that long drive from Santo Domingo or Punta Cana and after a 20 min drive were checking in. I have to say the staff really tried to speak English and were confused when we spoke spanish, I guess they didn't expect it coming from obvious Americans. We reserved a priveledged room and were checked in quickly and with a smile and a glass of rum punch. Had to go right back and change our room as the balcony was facing the service road and right behind the main kitchen. No problem, they gladly moved us to a much better room facing the beautiful gardens very quickly.
Room was lovely and had a marble bathroom with a huge shower that we loved. Always hot water and a/c worked almost too well.
We immediately checked out the beach which was as pretty as we expected except due to the recent storms, the water was quite dirty. It usually is crystal clear so we were disappointed in that but of course no fault of the hotel's. Never the less we spent most of our time on the beach (that is when it wasn't raining, which was most of the time, again no fault of the hotel's).
The buffet was just okay. Breakfast was good and the omelet station was excellent.
However, lunch and dinner we were hard pressed to find something that looked appetizing in the buffet. We were given 3 vouchers for the specialty restaurants, Steak, Italian and Mexican. The hotel was not very full and we ended up eating twice at the steak place with no problem. The mexican was good but only ate at the Italian for lunch. Very good pizza. The house wine is not drinkable in my opinion, and tastes watered down, yuck.
I brought a couple of bottles of good wine with me to have in the room and also purchased a couple during our dinners at reasonable prices so that was no problem. Also being in a priviledged room got us 20% off our total bar bill.
My husband loves Presidente beer and was happy to see that on tap whenever he wanted it and they do make a fantastic Caparaina (sp?) which quickly became my daily afternoon beverage. The bar and wait staff are very hard working and they do it with a smile and will do what ever it takes to make you happy. Much better than our past experiences at the Wyndham. For this reason alone (and of course the value) we will probably return next year but not during the rainy season.
There's not much night life at this hotel as it's quite small compared to the others in Bayahibe and not as many venues for music and bars as Wyndham or Iberostar next door.
There is dancing and music at the main bar at night and the staff tries to get everyone up on the floor. We did notice no professional entertainment was brought in for the guests but the staff put on shows in the theatre almost nightly which we went to twice but were not impressed with at all. At least they tried and it was something to do.
On our last night there was a terrible storm as TS Maria was heading our way. Good thing we were on the 2nd floor (hint: always ask for the 2nd floor) we heard yelling and excited voices outside during this storm and found out they had to evacuate all the first floor rooms due to flooding and those poor guests were huddled outside in that pouring rain and lightening.
The next morning before we left we took a look at the beach and it was a mess. The water was so full of debris that there were actual trees floating in it. The staff were working hard to clean up the beach but didn't see anyone removing the floating debris so no one was swimming that day. Again, of course the weather is no fault of the hotel's, just don't go there during late August thru early December.

Room Tip: 2nd floor away from the bar and main restaurant

To start my advice is please take the other bad reviews with a grain of salt. It's obvious there were other(possibly personal) factors involved that caused these people to rate poorly.

Food:
The buffet was pretty typical for a 4 star resort, there was always at least a few new dishes every day, and every evening there was a theme for the buffet. There are 3 al a carte restaurants, mexican, steakhouse and Italian. They were all decent and in my opinion the mexican and italian were the best. Like any other resort you get to visit the al a cartes once, so at this resort you would get 3 al a carte dinners. We had the honeymoon package so we also got a romantic dinner on the beach included, it was very tasty! They have a pizzeria that is awesome. We ate there everyday for lunch, the pizzeria also serves pasta which was quite good as well. The snack bar at the beach was decent for a quick bite. We never had lunch at the buffet because the pizza was so good. The crepe bar on the beach was awesome as well, nutella crepes everyday for me! Drinks were decent and typical for a resort, they also have a premium/cigar bar were you can buy premium liquor/beer and cigars. The premium drinks were very reasonably priced. Also, all the restaurants/buffet and bar used bottled water so it's safe to drink what they give you.

Beach/Resort in General
The beach was awesome. As you can see in rayjoejam's review, their visit was over a year ago and we did not see this so called "rocky layer" they were speaking of on the beach.
All staff at this resort were super polite and nice. Another tip, you are very naive if you go to another country and just expect everyone to be speaking perfect English, you will find if you try a little to say stuff in spanish that goes along way and they really appreciate it. We had no issues communicating and we speak hardly any spanish. The animation team were funny and they had lots of fun activities going on all day to keep everyone entertained. There were always beach chairs available which was nice. The pool is large and was also very nice for a change from the beach. There is a JACUZZI just off the swimming pool, not a hottub as another review seemed to think it was. The difference between a jacuzzi and hot tub is the temperature, so the jacuzzi was just right.

We had a honeymoon suite which is also a privileged room and I would definitely recommend getting a privileged room. They are a bit more modern than the spanish looking rooms, although they were doing renovations when we were there so maybe they are starting to upgrade their standard rooms or adding more privileged rooms.

As alot of other people stated, alot of Europeans vacation at this resort, so almost none of the guests speak english, which is fine because I'm not there to hang out with them! The majority of the guests are Italian and I think that's why they put alot of care into the pizzas and pasta.

We also went on an excursion through our tour company to saona island. I recommend this one very much. It's so much fun. You take a catamaran to the island, hang on the beach for a bit, have a lunch that's included and then on the way back we stopped at a natural swimming pool in the middle of the sea and held starfish. So awesome!

Those of you who are interested in the wi-fi that the hotel provides, we did find it weak in our room but it was very strong in the hotel lobby, so if you bring a laptop just go to the lobby to check your emails and stuff. There is also a tiny, tiny lounge for privileged guests with a computer and some drinks/coffee--but it is small - the size of an office basically.

All in all, great resort, friendly staff, decent food and fun!

Room Tip: Upgrade to privileged for a more north american experience. For lunch, grab some pizza slices, g...

I went with a group of friends for my birthday the first week of November 2010. Check in took a long time; because the front desk could not find our reservations. So we were at the front desk for about an hour. Some of us got excellent rooms, I believe the room category was Privileged. However, the some got an horrible rooms that wasn't cleaned properly, the mattress had lumps and seemed severely old and used. I could not stop laughing when I saw the state of my friends room. It was ridiculous since this resort was shown as a 4 or 5 star resort. To even have a room in that condition, anyway... After calling Amex and complaining that was sorted out and a better room was issued.

The grounds were well kept, pool was nice. The beach was ok and a huge rocky layer on the shoreline which led into the water, so you would have to walk out several feet into the water to be on sand. Personally I prefer sand on the shore over rocks. But that I can certainly live with. Food was below average, lack taste and was just repetitive. Worse buffet ever and I am not picky. Just want my food to taste like something. I would have certainly expected better food from an hotel in the Dominican Republic. I been to other resorts and have well cooked tasty local food. This wasn't the case. Little thought, care and effort was put into the food served.

Some of the staff were nice, but many other seem rough around the edges. Some were extremely rude and didn't seem to have a clue on to treat their guests. In some instances, actually in many instances I saw the male hotel workers coming on the some of the female guests. On one occasion I saw a male hotel employee grabbed his crotch and then hi-fived another co-worker after he saw a female guest walked by in her bikini.

I remember one night sitting in the restaurant I got utensils which smelled liked raw eggs/fish, seemed to have needed a little more washing. So I asked for new ones, instead of just changing them. I got rolling of eyes and an explanation that they looked clean and she will change them but don't see any problem with them. So after that one occurrence, it was attitude central from the staff every night we went to the restaurant.

I would not go back to this resort or recommend to friends, especially female friends. The staff was just inappropriate and seem to lack proper training and had no guidelines to follow. Food was below average and because of the lack of professionalism and poor behavior of the staff I was constantly worried about the females travelling with us, especially at night when we all went to our rooms.

Do yourself a favor don't go here. For the price they are charging there are certainly better resorts. There are other nicer resorts in this area; Hard Rock, Viva Wyndam Dominicus Palace (much better resort) etc.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, travel in a group and try to upgrade to the Privilege room category. The r...
