First trip to The Dominican Republic and I choose LaRomana because it was on the Caribbean side of the island. It was a great choice. Just arrived home tonite after a weeks stay at iberostar. I will break my review into pros and cons.
Pros - the grounds of the hotel are beautiful and great pride is taken Into maintaining the beautiful gardens, beach, ponds and every inch of this resort. The staff are amazing and always have a smile on their faces and a warm greeting every time you pass them, this is from the gardeners, housekeeping , waitstaff and entertainment. Beach is very nice, I didn't find any problems with rocks as others have posted. Food was excellent. I preferred the buffets to the restaurants. You won't go hungry or thirsty. Well stocked refrigerator in the rooms and food 24/7. Activities are what you want to make of it. State of the art gym, spa, and there are games throughout the day, volleyball, soccer, etc. the staff makes great efforts to get everyone involved which is nice. The nightly shows are a little cheesy, but I didn't go on vacation for the nightly entertainment. The staff are very accommodating to your needs.
Cons. Be patient when checking in. I would recommend that they staff the front desk with more people on Saturday and Sundays, the times when people are checking in. This was a little annoying, especially when you traveled 8 hours to get here. The other big issue I had was the beach chairs. Yes, I did go during a holiday week and I would expect it to be busy, but finding beach lounges after 7:30 am is impossible. The hotel has policy of no reserving chairs but they don't enforce. People go down at 6am and put their towels on chairs and don't come back until 10 or later. This was a big turnoff for me. I went for a beach vacation and found it difficult to find two chairs after 8am I probably wouldn't travel during a holiday week knowing this is an issue that the I hotel doesn't do anything about it. I even witnessed two guests fighting over some beach chairs.

Overall I would recommend and would go back but not during a holiday week. Remember to tip!! Just because it is all inclusive doesn't mean you shouldn't tip. The staff work 16 hours a day so set aside an extra 100 dollars for tips, they deserve it. We had the same waitress everyday and gave her 5 dollars a day, some days I gave her 10. She knew what we drank by our second visit at the buffet and our names by the third visit.

If you can fly to la romana airport that should be your first choice. Punta Cana airport which is an hour away would be second choice. I flew into santo Domingo an fits a two hour trip to hotel.

Room Tip: I stayed in building 7. It is centrally located, near the pool. Would recommend this section.

If you are looking for an intimate setting for your vacation, this is definitely not the place for you. This has the feel of a timeshare resort, where it's at least a 10-15 min walk from the reception to the beach. That being said, it is a great all-inclusive resort if you are looking for this type of experience. Several restaurants open for dinner (Mexican, Japanese, Italian, Steakhouse) where you have to make reservations in the morning if you want to dine at these places. The buffet that is open during the day is good (not great), but the breakfast buffet is really great, with a good variety. (I recommend the Mexican restaurant).
The pool area is huge, and we always found chairs to lounge in, as opposed to the beach chairs. The beach was always very crowded, but that didn't bother us. Tons of families and kids (we had our one year old with us).
The check-in process was SUPER slow, so that was a disappointment. Service is good (not great), and overall I would recommend this place.

Room Tip: Rooms on building 4 are the closest to the beach (and super close to the pool too), but bear in mind...

My husband and I traveled to the Dominican Republic in the beginning of November and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The grounds of the resort are beautiful-loved all the birds roaming around. The gardens are spectacular and well maintained. Everything was clean and spotless. The service was wonderful. All the employees were friendly and tried very hard to accommodate any issue. The food was good and plentiful. Chairs were always available at either the beach or the pool. My only suggestion for improvement is the choices of alcohol. We did not like the one beer served throughout the resort and did not care for the rum. Other than that, I would recommend this resort to anyone!

We travel Caribbean region many times and this was our 4 trip to La Romana. We stayed at this resort Nov 01-08 2013.Overall resort is very good .Excellent service,good food . Beach is spacious and enough room for everybody at anytime.You can go for long walk along the beach if you wish.It is plenty of room for swimming . We did snorkeled
On a left side of the swimming area (seen alot od different fishes)
We live in Building 2 on the second floor,room was nice and clean. Housekeeping was excellent..Did not go to any a-la cart restaurant, buffet was realy good with plenty of choices.
I'd go back there.

This was our second stay at an Iberostar Hotel, but the first time in the Dominican Republic. If I had to sum up our week there: We'll be back!
From the moment we walked into the reception area, we encountered nothing but friendly staff and incredible service. We weren't there for 30 seconds and Alex already had our bags out of the van and walking us over to the Check-In area (which was also efficent and quick)! They had a welcome drink in our hands before we even left the Check-In counter.
We upgraded to suite, which I would highly recommend. We had a room with an ocean view and were able to watch the sun set from our balcony every evening.
So... the rest of our trip, experience, observations and comments:
Grounds - They are so well taken care of! Beautifully landscaped with lots of care and attention given to the plants, water features and environment.
Beach - Again, very well taken care of. There are many of beach chairs under palapas scattered along the beach (which is also a good size). People are out on the beach very early (6:30am) and many do "claim" there chairs early. There is just no way the staff can monitor who is using a chair or just "claiming" it. There were always a chair to be found when we wanted one.
Ocean - Many people complain about the rocks in the ocean! It's the ocean... they can't drain it and clear the rocks out! Go to the pool if you want a smooth surface to walk on! Very nice calm water and waves.
Pool - Actually colder than the ocean, but it was refreshing. Always a chair available around the pool when we needed one. Clean and well maintained! I was amazed at the people who posted on here about tiles missing from the pool. The pool is made up of millons of 1 inch tiles and people are complaining about a few missing... I don't get it! Also, there is a jacuzzi in the middle of the pool area but it was actually cooler than the pool :(
Room - Excellent! Always cleaned and taken care of each day. We always looked forward to coming back to our room to see what little treasures would be left for us (Towel sculptures, flowers, how the curtains were positioned). The housekeeps don't do all this in just 5 minutes! They really put a great deal of time and energy into each room! The rooms itself was updated and clean. Safe available in the room... TV with channels in many languages... Shampoo and body wash in the shower.
Bars - Always a friendly and quick staff who knew how to mix a variety of drinks! Local and top shelf spirits were available as well as tap beer. The drinks were always strong and nicely presented.
Food - Not blown away by the buffets. Average food most days except on Asian Day... That was fantastic!! The two restaurants we ate at - La Hacienda & La Geisha were out of this world! Food, service and environment were excellent! Went to each of those twice.
Shows / Entertainment - Didn't take in any of the shows because we were in bed early after a long day diving. Did see some of the entertainers in the Lobby Bar in the early evening and they were very funny and entertaining (Happy Happy).
Staff - Always friendly, personable and polite. I must point out two people who went way above the normal level of service each and every day. Alex who works in the lobby area and Yolanda who was our housekeeper! These two people really embrace the idea of customer service and satisfaction!!!
Tips/Thoughts: 1) Free wifi in the lobby area! Just ask the reception people for the log-in information! 2) The lobby does change larger pesos for smaller if available. There is also a exchange company in Bayahibe who will break larger pesos. 3) $10 cab ride into Bayahibe... Go and explore the small town. It's safe & friendly! 4) It's a Spanish speaking country! Most of the staff speak excellent English but there is a language gap for some. Enjoy the culture and relax... Perhaps learn a few spanish phrases before you come. 5) It's an All Inclusive Resort but that doesn't mean that tipping is out of the question. 50pesos is a little over one USD. Drop a few pesos to the wait staff, bartenders, cab drivers and other service people. They ALL go out of their way to make our vacations wonderful.
Finally... If you are interested in Scuba Diving: May I suggest that you go to Scubafun in Bayahibe. It's probably one of the best dive operations that I have ever been to!
Overall... Great resort and staff!! We will be back.

First time in the Dominican Republic but definitely not the last. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the resort. The service was superb, from Rosa's welcome at check in to Alex's assistance in getting us settled in our room. The grounds are just beautiful. The food was very good. Just wonderful value for the money. We look forward to our next vacation with Iberostar!

This is a very nice resort in every respect. Beautiful grounds, well maintained, nice pools and rec areas, great food, good bar service, excellent customer service, very good management, nice beach, comfortable rooms. I have two small suggestions that could really improve guest experience. One is remove the stones or rocks on the entry to the water on the beach. These are a few meters from shore, loose and would not be difficult to remove. Second, it's very difficult to change money into small bills for tips at the cashier's desk. Why not keep some on hand so guests can make change to tip staff without a hassle? Small issues .... if you're thinking of this resort.... go for it! You will have a wonderful experience. (Have also stayed at the GBP Ambar, the Be Live Canoa, the Majestic Excellence. The Iberostar Dominicus is my favourite. )
