Ok, that title may be a bit severe only some guests let themselves down the majority were fine, but let me explain why i wrote it.
The hotel consists of three blocks on one side and four on another running parallel down to the beach. The gardens and pool area are in the center. This means the hotel is large for the size of the beach area it has, one third is rocky and the rest has manageable access. you still have to be careful as there is still some rocks. It is in this area that the sunbeds get reserved well before 7 am. The Hotel has a policy of not reserving sunbeds but does not enforce it. I understand it may be difficult to enforce during the day but in the morning when most of the sunbeds have been reserved but the beach is nearly deserted, then the towels should be removed. Even the prime spots around the pool are reserved early so if you like a long lie in the morning be aware you may have to wait until the afternoon to get a good sunbed. If you do get one on the beach you can always look out for the sunbed wars that breakout, they shout and bicker with one another just like a colony of nesting sea birds.
Another thing to be aware of is that other guest steal your beach towels, when this happens you have to go to guest services and fill in a small form and then go to the towel hut to get them replaced, it took me about forty minutes to complete. The girl was pleasant enough and told me not to worry as it happens all the time.
The pool is nice and large but has a few broken tiles, so if you have young kids you would need to be careful

The hotel has four specialty restaurants, El Colonial being the best, although the maitre d can be cheeky and the service is slow. Jazmine a waitress in the main buffet restaurant could show them how to be efficient and friendly she was fantastic.
The food was very good and previous reviews have mentioned food poisoning, however i have no doubt that it is not the hotels fault but the fault of other guests. You will see them walking around eating food from their plates with their fingers, then picking up more food, again with their fingers. One woman even licked her fingers and stuck them in the grated cheese and then licked the cheese of them, yuk. I would encourage the hotel to let the staff in the food areas reprimand the guests who do not seem to understand basic food hygiene. Also enforce your dress code particularly in the snack restaurant, ladies were mostly ok but men wandering around wearing only trunks is not acceptable.
One good thing is that you can book three of the four specialty restaurants in a week and if you want to plan ahead you can book them all at once from guest services in block four. The service in the bars was mostly good although if you don't tip Yan in the beach bar you may become invisible. Morfan and Antipanito were both excellent and very good at teaching me Spanish.

The entertainment team work hard throughout the day and know to leave you alone if you are just wanting a lazy day. The entertainment at night is very hit or miss, the lead female singer is very good but some of the shows are bad. I appreciate that they have to cater for all tastes but when people leave early this should be a indication that all is not well with that particular show.

The safe in the rooms will cost two dollars per day and you have to pay for internet access. The hotel has a few shops but if you want to buy anything i would encourage you to take a walk into the small built up area to the left of the hotel. It is only a couple of streets but at least your money would be going into the local economy and not to a big hotel chain.

We stayed here in 2010 and it was the best holiday we have ever had! Staff were so friendly, resort was gorgeous and clean and food was outstanding. The Mexican restaurant was by far our favourite. uunfortunately we did not experience the nightly entertainment as by the end of the day we were too tired to move lol but I expect it was great also.

We stayed in Iberostar La Romana in November of 2012 and went back in April of 2013. Needless to say we had a wonderful time, great food, great service, amazing overall experience. We once again chose to stay in building #4 and were accommodated by the staff. We stayed in a suite on a second floor, with the double balcony overlooking the ocean, the suite had two bathrooms, only one with the shower, though, with 2 adults, a toddler and a teenage girl we definitely used all the space. I find the beach in Iberostar to be amazing, the staff very friendly and helpful, food high quality. Great vacation once again!

Room Tip: If you want to be closes to the beach ask for building 4

Stayed for a week the beginning of April. There were two families, 4 adults and 3 kids. Could not find fault with anything at all about our stay. Staff were fantastic, hard working and friendly. Food was great. We stayed in building 3, right next to the pool. The resort is not one of those massive things where you have to take a trolly when you want to eat or go the beach. Everything is within an easy enough walking distance. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Our maid did a fantastic job every day and usually made beautiful artwork out of the towels and drapes. AC worked perfect. We were on the third floor on an end unit with only our friends on the other side, so no problems at all with outside noise. The pool was lovely and big enough that is never seemed crowded, with nice warm water. And yes, the chair reservation game exists but that is no different at all than any other resort. The beach is big with nice soft sand. However, we did not spend alot of time at the beach as the week we stayed the water was unusually rough. Great for body surfing, but snorkling was out of the question. There are alot of rocks in the water which would not be an issue at all if the water was calmer, but you could not see them in the rough surf so a bit hard on the toes. The rough surf was of course not at all the fault of the resort, just an odd week ocean-wise. Water was nice and warm though. The grounds are breathtaking and artfully manicured. The gardeners obviously work very hard to keep this up. Lots of wildlife to be seen, with ducks, swans, flamingoes and peacocks. The peacocks show up everywere, including the pool area and in the building courtyards! They are certainly not shy! Buildings well maintained and bright. Food was fantastic. There is so much selection that even the most picky should be able to find something to satisfy them. After the first day, we generally found our same table set up for all 7 of us waiting, so nice that the staff anticipates the needs of their visitors. The guys at the beach bar I give two thumbs up. Always happy and smiling. Drinks were all good, with a good selection. Sure they used local alcohol, but there is nothing wrong with it. I'm on vacation on a tropical island, so no need to be complaining about not getting premium stuff. A pina colada is a pina colada, as long as it's cold! The lobby bar has more of the premium stuff if it just means that much to you (or just stay home and spend your money at the LCBO). Went to three of the a-la-cartes, which were easy to book. The steakhouse was ok. Mine was cooked perfect, but one in our group ordered medium rare and basically got blue. No big deal though, as the food was good. Went to the mexican (Hacidenda) as well. The food there was also good, but communication with the waiter was difficult. One of the kids didn't get his meal until an hour later. Once he got it, it was good though. By far though, the most incredible of any meal we had there was the Colonial (gourmet). Lobster is finicky to cook properly, but it was done to perfection. Some ordered the beef and they were happy with that too. The service was formal, attentive and impecible. Would have loved to eat at this one every night! Two thumbs up to the staff at the Gourmet! The main buffet was great for breakfast and dinner. Usually ate at the pool buffet for lunches. Pizza was a hit (cooked in wood oven) and nice to have nachos with cheese or popcorn to nibble on when the munchies hit. Our friend at guest services in another notable staff member. From the minute we got off the bus and into the lobby, he was very attentive and helpful. Check in was a breeze, as was check-out. The wi-fi worked well enough. Yes, you have to pay for the safe, but it is worth the peace of mind. This is not the only resort I've stayed at in which internet and the safe were extra $. In the grand scheme of things, these charges are minimal and probably not worth arguing about. Communication with staff could be a bit of a challenge as english is not their first language. But I make no complaints about this, as I am a visitor in their country and they do their best. I just made sure I learned a few key words in Spanish before I left (including teaching my kids the pleases and thank-you's). The majority of visitors are French (France) or Spanish (Argentina maybe?). A smattering of German, Russian. Few Canadians or Americans, but no big deal. If the purpose of my vacation was to seek out and hang out with fellow Canadians, I'd go to Cuba or just stay home. I'm on vacation to spend quiet time with my kids and friends, relax, see the sights and soak up local culture and meet the locals. If I meet some fellow Canadians, great! If not, it certainly does not break the vacation. Did two day excersions. A two-hour private tour of La Romana was nice as you can go at your own pace and decide what you want to see. Also took the catamaran to Saona. They all leave from Bayahibe, which is a lovely little town. I would have liked to spend a bit more time there. The catamaran was fun and lively. Pay attention though when you book your Saona trip as to where exactly you are staying on the beach. Every tour company has their own beach area. There are beaches on two sides. One is on the sheltered side of the island, and is likely where you would go for the more expensive excersions. Water is calmer there. The other side faces the open ocean and that is where we went. The big surf on the resort beach was nothing compared to the waves we encountered on Saona. Again, maybe it is not so rough other times, but the week we went, the ocean was pretty wild! Sand is powder soft on Saona, and it certainly worth a trip out there. One tip for the pool area of the resort - watch your towels! An older french couple casually lifted mine from my chair while I was in the pool (the kids caught them). Of course, they don't speak english so getting them to return the towel was pretty much impossible. They seemed to not understand when we spoke to them in french either? An elderly woman behind us also had her towel taken. Keep in mind you have to pay for the towels if you do not return what was given to you so there are those who think nothing of stealing your towel if they have misplaced one of theirs. Animation team was hilarious (love Lady Gaga) and always fun to watch. LaRomana airport is tiny but that is a good thing. Usually only one flight arrives/departs at a time so it is never busy. The bags were already waiting for us by the time we got out of the customs area. We were also the only ones on our flight going to Iberostar, so we had a small bus all to ourselves! Maybe 15 minutes to resort. Our friend at Guest Services also arranged to have our returning bus pick us up based on our needs since we were the only ones being picked up. All in all, this was an amazing vacation. I would absolutely, definately come back to this resort and would definately recommend it to anyone! Congratulations Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus on a resort so well put together!

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad block in the resort. Block 3 was perfect for us, as we preferred t...

We stayed for a week and had fabulous service, relaxing days and lazy evenings. The staff is so kind and always wishing to serve. I have read comments about English being a barrier at times, but I found that knowing a few words of Spanish for yourself goes a long way. Knowing that you were trying to use their words meant alot to most of the staff. Who are we to expect them to be perfectly fluent, anyways?!! There were many French and German folks staying as well, so don't expect English to be a majority language.
The grounds were very beautiful and the wild life added a serene touch. Seeing a swan gliding along without a care made one feel carefree and relaxed. Trees and shrubs were all very well groomed. No bugs!!!! We had brought repellant but never needed it.
We had mentioned that this was an aniversary trip while checking in and receved a lovely second bottle of rum with a warm note attached.
Francisco, the Apple rep was outstanding and very professional.
We would return again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: We were in building 3 and had no complaints.

My wife and i spent a wk here apr 13 - 20 , destination wedding to attend on Tues. The wedding day was great wheather and a good time by all ( 50 pepole attended )
Dissapointed with how the resort failed to keep control of the other gest surronding the ceremony . Dinner was held in the mexican res. , not very good food for the main entre my beef tasted like the bottom of my sandals. THEIR is many good things to say about this resort as their is negative things . I have traveled to Cuba , Jamaica 2 , Mexico , Barbados etc . Our room was excellent , very clean and the maid was great . Didnt like having to pay $20 for the usage of the safe . The resort grounds are emaculate ,staff always working on the plc . Pool is beautiful , very clean every day . The food here is average ( Jamaica is a lot better ) could be just us but we didnt feel great all wk , not like us we like all types of food . I did have a great ela cart dinner in the colianal res. , nice lobser tail ( expect to tip ) .Let you now all the bars stock only the island brands ( unlike JAMAICA that had good top notch liquior)The staff is usually friendly , lots of security all day u feel very safe . But you would think that staff working in check in , bars , waiters in the elacart res can speak enough english to converse with you , not the case , very frustarting to get the wrong drinks ect . Like to say that SAMUEL is a great staff member very freindly . Staff at the lighthouse bar also are great ( resort should add another staff there to busy for one guy ) This resort is a 5 star for grounds , beach , pool , but a 3 star for food
Now we fly into Punt cana Sat at 3:00pm , sunwing flight was good no problem until we landed. This is the worst airport i have been to , about 1500. people trying to get thur customes and on a bus . this airport should only handle 500 pepole at a time . 2 1/2 hrs of being pissed off finally found the rite bus to get on ( NO HELP FROM THE SUNWING REP ) the airport staff here are the worst i have seen . When we departed on the 20th again 3 hrs of confussion and a ton of passengres compainling of the delays . Only 5 dominic minutes ( its a joke for 2hrs can time )
Neddless to say we will never travel to PUNTA CANA airport again .my final comment is that I think Punta Cana has become to popular and greedy for all of our business as you dont feel very welcome like other destinations treat you

Room Tip: building 4 is close to the ocean and pool

The staff, food, weather, entertainment are all 5 star - the beach is soft sand and safe for kids - the service and friendliness of the staff is consistently superb - this is our 8th time here and how anyone can complain is beyond us - bottom line worth every penny of our hard earned money.
