The best thing I did in the Domincan Republic was the ProExcursion dune buggy tour! It was amazing. Our tour guide, Oscar, was great. Very personable and made the tour a lot of fun. We took a safari style truck out to the dune buggys and met up with the mechanics/tour helpers and the photographer. (side note: highly recommend getting the photo package. He took amazing photos and was a photo ninja! showed up everywhere for better shots than i ever expected. bring extra cash!) Then we were off.
First through the sugar cane fields, where at the first stop we go to eat fresh sugar cane. Then back to the buggys and to the town. Gracious residents and sweet kids came to check us out. We were also able to donate for rice for those who needed it. Then through the plantain and banana fields down to the water. A nice break from the hot weather and rinse off some mud. Then on to the owner of the plantation's house. Humbling hospitality as he and his family offered us fresh bananas, fried yucca and plantains, cherries, and even aloe!
This was not only a lot of fun, but a side to the Domican Republic that I otherwise would not have seen and I am so grateful for it. We stayed at a resort, which could have been anywhere. This tour let us see the real country side and met gracious locals.
If you do one excursion when you are on vacation to the Domincan Republic, I highly highly recommend proExcursion's Dune Buggy tour!!!

Pro Excursions in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic has some of the greatest excursions one could experience in this area. We opted for the 4 hour dune buggy experience. Almost didn't get to go because everyone had cancelled except my wife and I, but Mike, the owner, made it happen. What a guy. Oscar was our guide. He is from Argentina and was a joy to be around (I used to live in Argentina so we had lots to talk about). He is fluent in Spanish, English and French. We first went zooming through the rain forest, splashing through puddles of water and getting muddy and soaked. What a blast. And on through the sugar cane fields. Oh by the way you get to drive your own buggy, not just ride along. These are awesome machines. I digress. It seemed like the sugar cane fields went on forever. We stopped at the loading dock where they load the cane onto the train. Oscar told us the history of sugar cane in this country and about the hard work the workers perform. Then we had the opportunity to go to a small village. This is what we had planned on. We brought clothes for the pastor's wife and school supplies for the school children. What an awesome experience. These a Haitian immigrants trying to eak a living out of nothing. Then we took off to the river and swam in the river. Got some of the mud off, but not all. Then we went to the banana plantation and ate fresh bananas, yucca and plaintains. Oscar took us for a little field trip where we learned all about the plants that were grown on this plantation. The planation owner was there, and being a spanish speaker, I had a pleasant chat with him. This is the tour that will take you to see what DR is really all about versus all the touristy places. Mike and Oscar are a class act. We will difinitely return.

My sister and I went on the dunebuggy trip on our recent trip to the Dominican Republic. The trip is about 4 hours long. You get to experience parts of the DR you probably wouldn't otherwise. We got to have sugar cane at a sugar cane field. We ate yuka, bananas and plantains at a banana/plantain field. We met the owner of the field and his family. You will get muddy so bring a bandana and a waterproof camera. They have someone taking pictures for you, which I recommend getting. Manuel took amazing photos!!! He was standing on his bike at one point, under the bushes at another..literally he was everywhere! So bring extra money for this, worth it!! Our guide was excellent (Oscar!!) and the rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful. It was an excellent trip, I highly recommend it!!!
