Just returned on the 22nd from a 7 day stay. Weather & beach were great. Buffet was also great, lots of variety. Upgrated to superior room, very clean & spacious. Would definetly recommend this resort. Yes their were lots of Italians but it didn't bother us. We were their for the beach & relaxation. We tipped alot & good great service because of this, the bartenders & waiters & waitress always seen us coming and had our drinks prepared quickly. It seems not many people tip at this resort. We have been to lots of resorts & we were shocked.
The beach was the best part, water is rough but the waves were fun.
We would return to this resort.

Room Tip: Try to stay away from the entertainment section. We were in room 3282, 4th floor, lots of stairs, 2...

Totally agree with Lisa M from Kingston especially when it comes to the language issue and the interactions with staff. Exact same experience. Saw maybe half a dozen English speaking people the whole week. Went with my daughter (9 1/2) from Feb 15-22 inclusive. We stayed in a garden bungalow near the tennis court (1447). Definitely stay in a bungalow. As previously stated, it was clean, no bugs, no mold and didn't smell. It was quiet except for when the show was on (which starts late at 10:00) and that was loud. Also people walking by after show making lots of noise, but no different then if you are staying anywhere and there are loud people. We did only get clean towels though twice at the beginning of the week. Thankfully (or maybe because of this), we hang our towels up so at least they were dry.

The interactions between staff/guests and English speaking people is pretty non-existent. I found we didn't get any service in restaurant, and I just started getting coffee and drinks myself (which was easy to do). They did clear our plates though (too quickly sometimes). As for food, we only went to the buffet (pizzeria one night) and always found something good to eat. Because they cater to Italians lots of fresh breads and pretty good pasta/risotto. Really good desserts too...loved the chocolate cakes...find it really hard to get chocolate cake at most all inclusives. I'm a dessert person and more often then not, disappointed with the choices...not here.

Bar service depended on who was working. The female staff...worse service/dismissive. The male staff, better but depended on who it was. Some would leave you standing there forever. Also being a largely European based clientele, the same "etiquette" that we are used to as Canadians (i.e. first come first serve) are lost here. It's frustrating at times.

Some comments on things I didn't see previously mentioned are added for those interested:

Kids Club: My daughter really looks forward to using kids club for activities. She doesn't generally stay all day, but will check to see when they are doing what and attend as desired. Well forget that. The schedule is in Spanish, they can't really explain what it is in English, and then they don't stick to it. There were no crafts done the whole week that we could see. Most of the time they just sat around and played video games. The pool time that was at 11:00 often got cancelled or happened at a different time. There were no kids there that spoke English and they were quick to point this out within minutes of our initial arrival. Flavia was there most of the time and she tried her best and was very friendly. The others pretty non-existent (or busy texting). They definitely need more structure and more activities though. Of all the kids club we have used, this was by far the worst. (one highlight was Carnival parade on the Wednesday. Kids dressed up and participated in a parade. However it took 5 minutes to dress, then they wait around for another 55 minutes until it's time to leave. Get the the location then stand around for an hour waiting for parade to start. While it was fun, there was again too much doing nothing in between the half hour of fun stuff.)

Shows: They start at 9:45-10:00. Way too late for my daughter (and for me for that matter). Never saw a resort start them so late. Perhaps the objective is to not have the kids go? Not sure.

Trapeze: This was awesome. The one thing I will rave about. 9-11:00 am every morning for the kids. They were on time, friendly and SPOKE ENGLISH. Thanks to Elizabeth the Canadian who works there! She was great as were all the staff in that area. The one thing we could count on for being on time and on schedule. Highly recommended.

Beach is beautiful. Lots of chairs but it is crowded. Didn't have to get up before sunrise to reserve a chair (nice change), but it does get crowded. Lots of shade which is great.

Would I recommend the resort, yes if you speak Italian or Spanish, no if you only speak English. Although it doesn't seem like a big factor, it is. By the end of the week you've had enough. They should not promote this to Canadians as the resort does not seem to really want/need the Canadian business.

Room Tip: Bungalow definitely worth staying in. Beachfront would be nice too, door opens right out onto the b...

We stayed at viva wyndham dominicus beach Feb 9-16 2013 The weather was perfect the beach was absolutely gorgeous as was the grounds. We stayed in a bungalow which I would definately recommend but on the quiet end of the beach closer to la roca the other side is by the disco which goes until after 1 am at night and could be very loud. The room was spotless the maid service was great no concerns of mold or bugs ever. The food was just ok you could eat something everyday but the resort caters strictly to Italians menu and activity wise. We were the only English speaking couple at the resort the entire week. This was a bit frustrating at times as all of the ENTERTAINMENT STAFF ONLY INVOLVED OR SPOKE TO THE ITAILIAN GUESTS THE ENTIRE WEEK. WE WERE NEVER INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITIES. We decided it was because they would have to explain the game or contest in English and decided it was easier to just speak italian and not worry about anyone else.
The BAR STAFF WAS OVERALL VERY GOOD ESPECIALLY CARLOS SANTANA AND TOMMS The rest of the staff would completely ignore us and serve everyone else no matter when they arrived for the beverage over us. even tho we were the only people who tipped the staff . This did not ruin our vacation for as I saId the resort and beach was absolutely gorgeous and did not deserve a 3 star rating I could find no reason for it other then the fact that it was more like being in little Italy then the Dominican which I have been to on 4 different occasions,
THe excursions were good Crazy Wheels excellent Victor our guide was great. The day trips to Soana Island and snorkeling were beautiful only complaint again we were the only English couple on the trip the guides did speak to us in English and explained sites (short Version) to us .
We are no strangers to travel and expect to hear a variety of languages and try to speak them as well. So hearing different languges is an expectation . The attitude of the italian guests at this resort was our only complaint . Very unfriendly and rude to all the staff at all times As Canadians we are not accustom to that attitude and found it very dishearting. HOWEVER
FOR A GREAT BEACH AND LOCATION THIS IS A GOOD CHOICE JUST DONT PLAN TO SOCIALIZE WITH ANYONE WHILE YOU ARE THERE.

Room Tip: bungalow 1224 was perfect quiet pretty location

I will try and be as honest and unbiased as possible. I am a 24 year old female living in the United States I went on this vacation in August with my Fiance and it was overall average to good. We did not go outsideof the resort or on any excursions. The location and beaches are beautiful but some aspects of the resort were not so great.

Pros
Absolutely beautiful beaches with white sand and carribean green and blue waters.
The palm trees and scenery is gorgeous, they have lots of sunny and shaded areas with seating
They have free Trapeze lessons ( I did this very cool) you have to go to the trapeze area at the right time and sign a waver its free!
Free kyaks and sailing lesson excursions if you get to the sports area at the right time
They have a professional photographer that can take photos of you on the beach, with a monkey and maccaw parrots (photo session is free photos cost 10 dollars each to get on a cd on average)
Massages are available for purchase on the beach
The resort has a few gift shops and things to do at night (shows, club dancing ect.)
The resort plays music at night and usually has dancing after the shows which can be very fun!
They have special events and extras one night it was champagne and international desserts for example near the grotto
Great and beautiful pool and common areas, nice pool beds

OK:
If your looking for planned activities during the day they have a few fun ones but it can be a party scene (we were looking for more relaxing)
Average Food( but they have a large selection of food options)

Cons
The beach area can get very crowded it is a very large resort you have to get to the beach early if you want a chair and the chairs are so close together
All of the pools close around 6pm and there are no swim up bars
We got a standard room and it was muggy and musty the AC was not powerful enough for the extreme August heat, the standard room is small and the bed is not in any way posted to the wall or stable it will move if you are planning any romantic time.
The beds are hard and pillows and bedding muggy
You only get acertain number of sit down dinners and you have to make a reservation for them with the front desk the rest of the meals are buffets.
Not very American friendly and guests were 90% Italian or international/European
All inclusive alcoholic drinks were honestly awful they serve then to you in these miniature plastic cups with barely any ice and all beers come from a keg of local beer very standard.

Overall the place pools and area is beautiful but the resort and rooms were not very good making this vacation a very fun and beautiful one but I think we will spend the money we have on another resort next time. Hope this helps!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Dominicus Palace the rooms are newly renovated (the standard rooms are not so great...

My husband and I just returned from our first vacation to the Dominican Republic, and we were NOT disappointed in the least by this resort! I don't know where the people who are giving negative reviews stayed or ate, but we stayed in a garden view bungalow that was clean and comfortable with no bugs or mold. The food was amazing. We are both pretty picky eaters, but always found something delicious to eat and never left hungry, both at the buffets and at the Mexican and Italian a la carte restaurants. As for the staff, EVERYBODY is so friendly, when you walk by they always greet you with a smile and a heary 'HOLA!'. From the front desk, to the bartenders, to the maids, to the chefs, everyone made us feel welcome. The only thing we would change is the length of our stay, we were there for a week and wish we had stayed longer! We will DEFINITELY return as soon as we can!

Room Tip: Bungalow is definitely worth the extra money!

My friend and I stayed at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach for 10 days, returning last night on January 24th to -21 degrees. I have travelled to a number of different resorts over the years including Punta Cana, Peurta Plata, Cuba and Mexico. This was the first time to the LaRomana area of D.R., as well as the first time to a resort that was rated less than 4 stars.

We were picked up at the Punta Cana airport and with the new 4 lane highway, it was only a 40 minute drive away. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly woman who quickly directed us to the front desk (no problems checking in and very friendly), and then to a bell boy who spoke very good English. We were taken to the 4000 section and had a large room with two dbl beds.

Although we were on the first floor, we could see the beach from our patio and were within a 2-3 minute walk to either beaches to the left of right. As we were there for the beach. i have to say it was really beautiful with no rocks, seaweed, coral, etc. Drinks were great, and as Canadians, we are used to tipping but seemed to be the only ones to do so. Beach staff and bar tenders were very nice, service was great, drinks good.

We were aware that this resort is catered to many Italians but were surprised as we were about the only English speaking guests at the entire resort. One guest approached us as he heard us speaking English and had not heard any English in the 4 days he had been there! The Italian guests totally ignored us like we were invisible, barely even a nod or a hola despite our attempts to be hospitable.

This is a very quiet resort, not one time share person approached us, no vendors on the beach or anywhere else, no para sailing, or water taxis zipping by. The buffet only opens at 7pm but the food is ok. we ate at one a la carte on the beach which was very nice. the Italians love their espresso so they always got that in the large beautiful courtyard. This courtyard was the center of activity in the evening with music, lots of tables and chairs, bar, etc to gather in. reminded me of what Italy would look like.

A trip into the city of La Roma is an eyeopener and if you wish to shop, the streets just outside of the resort in town of Dominicus is nice and safe with security all around.

I would definately go back to this place for the solitude and beautiful beach. Bring your snorkle, and your insulatated cup (we were the only ones with cups), and a good attitude and you will have a wonderful vacation, especially if the weather was as hot and beautiful as it was last week!

Room Tip: Ask to be close to the beach. It is worth it. The bungalows looked very small and would be concern...
