Totally agree with Lisa M from Kingston especially when it comes to the language issue and the interactions with staff. Exact same experience. Saw maybe half a dozen English speaking people the whole week. Went with my daughter (9 1/2) from Feb 15-22 inclusive. We stayed in a garden bungalow near the tennis court (1447). Definitely stay in a bungalow. As previously stated, it was clean, no bugs, no mold and didn't smell. It was quiet except for when the show was on (which starts late at 10:00) and that was loud. Also people walking by after show making lots of noise, but no different then if you are staying anywhere and there are loud people. We did only get clean towels though twice at the beginning of the week. Thankfully (or maybe because of this), we hang our towels up so at least they were dry.
The interactions between staff/guests and English speaking people is pretty non-existent. I found we didn't get any service in restaurant, and I just started getting coffee and drinks myself (which was easy to do). They did clear our plates though (too quickly sometimes). As for food, we only went to the buffet (pizzeria one night) and always found something good to eat. Because they cater to Italians lots of fresh breads and pretty good pasta/risotto. Really good desserts too...loved the chocolate cakes...find it really hard to get chocolate cake at most all inclusives. I'm a dessert person and more often then not, disappointed with the choices...not here.
Bar service depended on who was working. The female staff...worse service/dismissive. The male staff, better but depended on who it was. Some would leave you standing there forever. Also being a largely European based clientele, the same "etiquette" that we are used to as Canadians (i.e. first come first serve) are lost here. It's frustrating at times.
Some comments on things I didn't see previously mentioned are added for those interested:
Kids Club: My daughter really looks forward to using kids club for activities. She doesn't generally stay all day, but will check to see when they are doing what and attend as desired. Well forget that. The schedule is in Spanish, they can't really explain what it is in English, and then they don't stick to it. There were no crafts done the whole week that we could see. Most of the time they just sat around and played video games. The pool time that was at 11:00 often got cancelled or happened at a different time. There were no kids there that spoke English and they were quick to point this out within minutes of our initial arrival. Flavia was there most of the time and she tried her best and was very friendly. The others pretty non-existent (or busy texting). They definitely need more structure and more activities though. Of all the kids club we have used, this was by far the worst. (one highlight was Carnival parade on the Wednesday. Kids dressed up and participated in a parade. However it took 5 minutes to dress, then they wait around for another 55 minutes until it's time to leave. Get the the location then stand around for an hour waiting for parade to start. While it was fun, there was again too much doing nothing in between the half hour of fun stuff.)
Shows: They start at 9:45-10:00. Way too late for my daughter (and for me for that matter). Never saw a resort start them so late. Perhaps the objective is to not have the kids go? Not sure.
Trapeze: This was awesome. The one thing I will rave about. 9-11:00 am every morning for the kids. They were on time, friendly and SPOKE ENGLISH. Thanks to Elizabeth the Canadian who works there! She was great as were all the staff in that area. The one thing we could count on for being on time and on schedule. Highly recommended.
Beach is beautiful. Lots of chairs but it is crowded. Didn't have to get up before sunrise to reserve a chair (nice change), but it does get crowded. Lots of shade which is great.
Would I recommend the resort, yes if you speak Italian or Spanish, no if you only speak English. Although it doesn't seem like a big factor, it is. By the end of the week you've had enough. They should not promote this to Canadians as the resort does not seem to really want/need the Canadian business.
