“Unbelievably great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

Have never had the level of attention from staff that Dreams gives. Each employee I encountered not only was very helpful, but eager and happy to help. Attitude goes a long way! Even the maintenance and landscape personnel have great attention to detail. While the room may not be spectacularly decorated, everything is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The rest of the resort is so great there isn't a need to spend much time in the room. The entertainment options are creative, some spectacular shows.
Food and drinks are wonderful with quality, presentation and great taste, especially at the ala carte restaurants.
The beach is smaller than other areas we have traveled. Can't walk as far on the beach, but this also keeps it more private. Especially nice not to have to wear ID bracelets.

Everything was great except for room service. Towels had yellow stains on them and fridge was not refilled every day. The jewel of this hotel is the beach .... Best beach I've ever seen in a hotel, and it is located in natural lagoon with large shallow reef. Even though there is not a huge variety of underwater life but every day I've been very happy to snorkel early in the morning. Not sure if I'd come back here, I'd like to try Iberostar La Romana first. And if I'd come back that would be only because of the beach.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Just returned from a week at Dreams La Romana, (Feb.18-25). As with any vacation people have different expectations resulting in differing experiences. We are a retired couple who have spent over 20 years visiting all-inclusives in the Caribbean and Mexico. At this point our desires are for cleanliness, good beach, comfortable rooms, good food, and good service.

We agree with other reviewers who have given Dreams La Romana an overall less than 5-star review. However in some catagories Dreams earned a solid 5-star gold rating.

LOBBY: Compared to other 5-star hotels, this Dreams has very small public areas. The lobby seemed exceptionally cramped. The lobby bar was equally as small and was often crowded. The space is divided into smoking/non-smoking, with the smoking section adjacent to the bar. A guest objecting to smoke would also have a problem enjoying the early evening live music as it too was in the smoking section. True a guest can sit in the non-smoking area, wait for waitress service (usually very prompt) and still hear the music. However during our week smoke and smokers would regularly spill over into the non-smoking section.

Service at the lobby bar was as prompt as could be expected given the often crowded conditions. We had no issues with the quality of the beverages. The bartenders were friendly, and even though my requests seemed to take a few by surprise they always figured out what I wanted. Waitress service in the lobby was equally as prompt and once served we seldom had to wait long for a refill.

Lobby rating - size 3, services 5.

BARS: We visited all...no complaints. The bartenders are efficient and more than willing to keep on trying until you get what you want.

Bar & beverage rating: 5

ROOM: Our room was in building 4. Again not the luxury I expect from a 5 star. Bathroom small with a single sink, insufficient towel bars/hooks, no exhaust fan. Balcony very small with no provision to hang wet bathing suits. (There was a line in the shower, but whenever did two wet bathing suits dry in a bathroom overnight?) Our bed was a large king, very comfortable. There was a table and two chairs for room service, but no additional seating for relaxing in the room. As stated before the balcony was tiny, with barely room for two plastic chairs and a teeny table. We are not large people, but it was truly too tight for both of us to sit on the balcony to relax with a cocktail.

The room was kept exceptionall clean. We always had sufficient towels. Dreams provides a selection of much appreciated extras. Lovely robes and slippers, shampoo, shower gel/soap, body lotion, sunscreen, cotton swabs/sticks, comb, shaving cream, toothbrush (no mouthwash or tooth paste!), even an umbrella. I suspect the consierge would get you anything you requested.

Mechanically there were no problems with the room.

Room rating - luxury/size 3

FOOD - One of the things we thoroughly enjoy about the Dreams resorts is their policy of no reservations and no restrictions regarding where and when you eat. BUFFET: We've always found Dreams buffets to be excellent, regardless of the meal. A guest should keep in mind the nature of a buffet. You will not find a rare prime rib or freshly steamed lobster waiting for you! However the selections offered are multiple, nicely presented, and tasty. During peak/crowded times you might have to return to get a serving of your favorite or wait a bit for beverage service. We seem to eat not at those times and always felt well taken care of by the wait staff. RESTAURANTS: Our favorite was the Jungle. The goat was superb! We by-passed the French and Mexican so cannot comment on those. Our meals in all the rest were excellent. As with any restaurant you may not like what you ordered, but that does not reflect badly on the establishment only your selection. I can promise you that if are less than satisfied ASK for something else. You will get it promptly and with muchos apologies for displeasing you.

And not to be missed are the beach hamburgers and hotdogs. (Include in this category are all of the other Dreams we've visited.) The best by far of any we've ever had in all our travels.

Room service was also excellent. When ordered outside of typical mealtimes, the food arrived very quickly. Lunch at 3 in the afternoon arrived before I finished my shower.

Restaurant/food rating - 5 star and then some.

BEACH: Ahhh, our biggest disappointment. We are beach people. We sit, we swim and we sit some more. Sitting was fine, swimming....not so good. Although there is a sufficient swarth of beach to accommodate sitting, access to the water is limited. Large sections of the beach are rocky to the point that you could not get in the water or stand once you do. There was a large amount of seaweed in one area. The water itself was warm and the waves minimal.

A huge issue at the beach (and pool) is the availability of beach loungers. Sorry to say if you do not get up at the crack of dawn and smack down a towel on one you may be doomed to a morning of roaming. If the resort could figure out a way to enforce "a one person one lounge" rule it might not be so bad. We saw twosomes who managed to occupy as many as 6 loungers, two in the sun, two in the shade and two to hold their "stuff". This is grossly unfair, but a situation that we have found in a great many all-inclusive resorts, not just Dreams.

Beach rating: 2

POOL: We don't do pool, except for the occassional visits to the swimup bar. Lounge chairs seemed to be an issue. The pool closest to the beach was clean. Seldom much in the way of rowdiness going on.

Pool rating: NA

ACTIVITIES: We do not snorkel, scuba, get in boats, take dance lessons, stretch, play volleyball, or work up any kind of sweat. (Been there, done that.) But it appeared those who did were enjoying themselves immensely. There always seemed to be activity for those inclined. There are many off site excursions offered. Again, been there done that, but the zip-line does seem intriguing...maybe next year....

ENTERTAINMENT: In general only fair. There were a few outstanding moments. The staff tries very hard, but this is not Vegas. The theatre is outdoors, no roof, by the activities pool which results in very odd seating. A couple of shows were presented in the conference area. For people who want "night life" this is not a resort for you.

Evening entertainment rating: 2

STAFF: Absolutely EXCELLENTE! Perhaps because we have spent 20+ years vacationing at all-inclusives we have a better idea than newbies as to what to expect, but Dreams staff never disappoint. On our first day I managed to get turned around and "lost". I approached a young man sweeping up fallen leaves on a walkway. He spoke no English but rather than just shake his head "No Englise..." he took me to someone who did! Even when faced with foreign speaking irate guests (not us) Dreams staff kept their cool and handled the situation.

Staff rating: 5+++

FINAL WORDS: Folks you are on vacation...chill out...assume Dominican time...what's your hurry? Customs are very different through out the world. Don't expect your hosts to know what it is you expect unless you tell them. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, but don't expect to always get it either.

Room Tip: If you want quiet get a garden view. Building 4 is an Apple Vacation building and has a private conc...

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

We just got back from Dreams La Romana and we are in a very good position to compare this resort to another resort just up the coast (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus). We stayed at the Iberostar 5 weeks previous to our stay last week at Dreams. At Dreams, we paid the extra to stay at the "Preferred Club" (PC) area of the resort. Not sure if it was worth it as it turned out to be more of a private area for adults with infants and children. The only noticeable difference was the quality of the drinks. They serve premium brands here such as Corona and Bud for the beer, and for example, Johnny Walker Black and several other name brands for Scotch. The same holds true for other types of liquor. That really makes a difference at the end of the day when you want to enjoy a nice cocktail and enjoy a cigar on your deck or balcony. The first thing we noticed after arrival, was that despite being "preferred", we waited for at least 15 minutes to be taken from the front lobby to the PC where we were to check in. The idea behind the PC was that you would not have to wait in line at the main lobby, but be directed immediately to this much faster and efficient PC check in area. Not so. The ladies at the PC were very good. Despite telling us that it would be 2 hours before getting into a cleaned room, they managed to get us the two rooms we needed by the time we finished lunch. I really do not understand how people can say that the food here is great....it was very sub standard for a 5 star resort. It got to the point where neither my wife, myself, or my two older kids could stomach the buffet. Compared to the Iberostar...no comparison, and very poor! The service in the world buffet is again, 3 star at best. Took forever to flag down a coffee person in the morning let alone get a refill. This would never happen at the Iberostar, night and day difference. When arriving at the buffet, it was difficult every time we went to try and find a cleaned, prepared table. Again, no comparison to the Iberostar! At night during dinner service we had to clear our used plates ourselves between visits to the buffet? Every time we would sit down to a table, there would be something missing, either a utensil, napkin, or salt, etc. This may sound picky, but when you pay for 5 Star service, you should receive it. Not so here. I think that at the Iberostar, they have more people working in their buffet area. They are much friendlier and better trained. Perhaps better paid as well. There doesn't seem to be any incentive for the people working at this resort to be more professional and raise their efficiency. There are of course some exceptions...the ladies at the PC, the bartender "Hector" at the PC bar (very professional). My children commented as well about the big difference in attitude between the two resorts, much friendlier and willing to bend over backwards to help at the Iberostar. This makes for a much different atmosphere!
The beach, BEWARE! The PC beach is not a beach, but an area beside the main/only beach that has no access to the water. Used primarily for sun bathing on higher end padded lounges. There really is no beach here compared to Dominicus Beach up the coast. It is very small, very crowded, the first 10'...full of seaweed, and so churned up that you can't see the bottom. The water trampoline has been broken for many weeks but still sits out there anchored...again, for a 5 Star Resort, this should have been fixed immediately or at least removed. We learned that it has been this way for weeks, if not months. The majority of the shoreline at this resort is rock and inaccessible, especially if you are staying at the PC area. They really should have an area near the PC buildings where you can go and just sit or lay by the sea, even if you can't access the water due to the rocky shoreline. This PC area needs the extra room. The two outdoor pool tables in the sports area were also not available because of their need for repair. The repair was supposed to happen while we were there, but didn't. I suspect they will stay this way for a long time. The pools.. the PC pool is FAR too small and very crowded during the day for the number of people it is supposed to serve. If you do not claim your chair/lounger by 7 AM, you're out of luck. There are very few loungers and very little privacy. This is a very small and confined area at the PC pool, you feel like you are sitting on top of each other at times. The pictures on the Dreams web site are very misleading. One can't do much about the crying babies and small children, it is just amplified due to the very small space. The main pool looked much better and less crowded. The specialty restaurants (we tried 3) are, as typical in most Dominican Resorts, a facade! They serve horrible food, have slow/poor service, and turn out to be a waste of time. Turned out that the best food we had was from room service, and the BBQ grill at the beach, where you could get a grilled hamburger, chicken burger, or hot dog. When cooked fully, (go when not busy) the hamburgers were the best tasting food that I had all week. Pretty sad for a 5 Star Resort! I wish I found this grill earlier to save me the pain of eating lunch at the World buffet. Breakfast at the World Buffet was really the only "food service" that was fairly good. The omelet station is good, but where isn't it good? I'm gluten free so it was really restrictive. Didn't feel that way at the Iberostar. We still managed to have a lot of fun, but not worth the 5 star price. This is an old, dated resort with refurbished rooms. They are very clean, but small for today's standards, especially the bathrooms (no room for two people). The specialty coffee cafe was a nice touch serving great specialty coffees. The only thing holding back the Iberostar from being a true 5-Star Resort is the non premium drinks. Other than that, there is no comparison between these two resorts. There was no availability at the Iberostar last week, so we decided to upgrade to 5 Stars at Dreams. It turned out to be a downgrade in pretty much every respect. We have friends who are leaving this Friday for this Dreams location. It will be interesting to hear what they think upon their return.

Room Tip: In the PC area, get a room facing the pool. Ground level worked great for us.

Dear John Y,

Thank you for your recent review of your stay at our resort.

We regret that your vacation with us did not meet your expectations, we pride ourselves on giving our guests excellent service, food and amenities.

We have a vast range of choices for those who wish to not eat in our World Cafe buffet, we have our seaside grill restaurant, pizza and hotdogs by the pool, snacks in our Coco Café and burgers at our Barefoot Grill on the beach, we are sorry this did not reach out to you as expected.

In our World Café, upon arrival you will be greeted by our staff who will then escort you to your seat, we offer this service so that our valued guests do not have to look for their own table, and will be guaranteed a unused and clean dining area, again we apologise if this did not reach out to you.

Our beach area, and our Preferred Pool often get excellent reviews, if neither of these reached your expectations we offer our apologies, however our Preferred guests can use any part of the resort, so if they do feel the Preferred pool is too small, they are more than welcome to use our main pool and our infinity pool should they wish too.

We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy our a la carte restaurants, we have a vast range of food choices for our guests, and we try our best to cater to our guests needs.

We are very pleased to hear you have some friends visiting our resort, and we are confident they will have an excellent vacation with us

We do hope that you and your family visit our resort once again in the future as we would love the opportunity to serve you again.

Kind regards

I was lucky enough to have gone to Dreams for my 21st birthday (which was in 2011 but i couldn't write a review that far back) and what can I say.. what a way to spend my 21st birthday!! The hotel couldn't do enough for me my fiancée and family. We went in September which yes is said to be the rainy season and even-though it rained it did not put a downer on the holiday in any way! The staff who work there are absolutely amazing and are the most friendly people I have ever experienced at a hotel. There were so many activities available for adults. The aqua aerobics was very good and the games on the beach were also alot of fun! The paella competition was brilliant so much fun, and an even better plus was getting to cook on the beach in the sun!! The cocktails were lovely and some favourites were the Blue Lagoon and a Pink Slushie drink which they added alcohol to!
The rooms were beautiful. Very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. The rooms were cleaned and changed every day and the mini bar was always stocked with water and fizzy drinks. The room service was also very good and the food was lovely! I am very fussy with bathrooms and the bathroom was lovely! very clean and spacious.
I was lucky to have tried all the restaurants, my favourite being the Mexican- the food there was amazing! The Thai was also lovely and honestly made the best Pad Thai I have ever had! I spent my birthday at the French Restaurant which was also lovely! I think the hotel offers alot of variety in places to eat so definitely something for everyone! The pools are brilliant plenty of room to swim around and the swim up bar is of course also brilliant if you like a drink!
I think one of the most amazing things is of course the beach.. the sea is as clear as fresh water and is great for people wishing to go snorkling which is not a disappointment. My mum and step dad went to Bacardi Island on a trip through the hotel and said this is something most definitely worth doing!
I have to say this is quite honestly the best place I have ever been and stayed at and again I couldn't think of a better place to spend my 21st birthday. Looking forward to returning hopefully in 2014.

My wife and I stayed at Dreams La Romana/Bayahibe 2/13 thru 2/20. After viewing some of the reviews prior to us arriving, we were somewhat concerned. After staying there however, we didn't experience any of the negative points or issues noted in any of the previous reviews.

The resort is as nice as any of the resorts in Punta Cana that we've stayed in over the past 8 years. I will have to say the beach is much nicer and longer in PC, but the water conditions at Dreams blow PC away!!!!! I don't know what Reimer 622 is talking about. Keep in mind the conditions around the point in LR at the other resorts is choppier and rougher like PC. The water was clear as a bell in the morning and in many spots of the Bayahibe harbor. It was sooooo calm compared to PC!!! As far as the seaweed, there was a little bit in certain spots later in the day after the sea breeze kicked in, but not in most places 10' in as reimer states. Maybe there was a storm pushing seaweed in while he/she was there. The staff were out early in the morning cleaning up what did wash up over night and did a magnificent job! The beach was kept pristine!

In regards to the beautiful water, I highly recommend experiencing Stand Up Paddleboarding while at Dreams. A short walk down the beach into Bayahibe, you will find Bayahibe SUP. The owner Yumi, can accommodate your level of experience. You will see clear to the bottom as you paddle around the protected waters of Bayahibe. Visit her at www.bayahibesup.com

As for the food at Dreams, It was no worse or better the any of the resorts we've been to. We find the buffet is the way to go. You will always find something good to eat. The ala carte restaurants try to be something they can't be for us. We are from NJ near Manhattan and experience some of the finer restaurants in the world, thus the ala carte's always let us down. We love the Dominican style food available on the buffet! When in ........

There is one negative that we would love to see Dreams address. We are older and do not have young children. Therefore when we travel, we don't need to be exposed to out of control kids with inconsiderate parents. Thus, we would love to see Dreams allocate a section of the beach and pool to adults only. There were certainly enough couples there without kids while we were there to justify that accommodation. That would ensure our return!
