This is a great way to spend a Wednesday or a Saturday on Mallorca. I always visit it each time I'm on the island.
Santanyi is a proper Spanish town. Although it attracts tourists on market day, it is not a 'resort', and is a lovely place to walk around, with lots of blonde stone buildings and very narrow streets.
If you like pastry, try Cuellar, a bakers on the corner of Carrer d'es Rafalet / Carrer de s'Aljub, in the centre near the market area. It is lovely! I have often considred staying on the outskirts of Santanyi instead of the coast, I certainly like the place enough.
On market day, Santanyi and all of the streets and alleyways that spider out from the centre, are taken up by an array of stallholders, selling a wide veriety of merchandise. Some of the goods for sale are competitively priced, but some, most definitely are not! The Spanish stallholders are not open to much negotiation, but the Prada/Rolex mongers from North Africa definitely are, and indeed expect it; always setting the initial asking price far too high. But it's all very amicable, and good fun. It can be very busy though.
The church is open to visitors in the morning at a nominal donation of one Euro.
The shops around the market are worth a look, and then take the weight off your feet at one of many street cafes.
If you have a car and therefore drive to Santanyi, I'd advise that you park on the Carrer de na Ravandella, which is a sort of 'ring road' around the town. It is easy to find as you will come to it before Santanyi centre, wherever you have travelled from. There are always an abundance of spaces here, beyond the roundabout that serves the main Palma road, and using this road / parking here, will keep you out of the very narrow alleys of central Santanyi, which can be a nightmare on market day. And it is a very pleasant walk to the market area. In addition, if you're like me, it will prevent you from losing your car in one of the many identical side streets, (what a pain that was! doh!).
All in all, it's excellent!
