We stayed at the Rigas hotel for 2 weeks from 11th September and had a nice holiday. I’ve thought long and hard about this review as I am struggling to be objective as we stayed at the Island Blue hotel in Pefkos, Rhodes last year which was similarly priced but in many respects far superior to the Rigas. Having said that Rigas is also so much better than many hotels we have stayed in before in Greece.

Anyway, on arrival at the Rigas we were shown to a smallish room on the ground floor, I asked if we could move to a higher floor (which were also bigger) but was told that the hotel was full so this was not possible. Interestingly people who arrived later the same day were given rooms on the higher floors. As mentioned our room was one of the smallest in the hotel but adequate and opened out onto the pool terrace which was convenient. We had a problem that our room was not cleaned on two days during the first week but after mentioning this to Natasha it was cleaned daily.

Food – breakfast was OK – not fantastic but a reasonable selection (yes I know it’s Greece and I don’t expect a full English). Lunchtime snacks were limited to Pizza, Greek salad, Toasties or Club sandwich. We ate there several lunch times and found the food to be a good standard.

Hotel facilities – the bar area was very quiet – hardly anyone using this area on an evening – not sure whether this was because it was towards the end of the season and also the weather was not brilliant or whether it was that the drinks were quite expensive. The pool area was compact but generally large enough for the number of guests – pool was very cold. Nice comfy sofas on the balcony looking out over the sea were a good place to relax and read a book etc.

Afitos village – this is a beautiful, traditional village with just enough tavernas, shops etc for us. Nothing like the more commercial resorts further along Halkidiki. The Rigas hotel is ideally situated just a few minutes walk from the village square. The village however was very quiet – again it seems that mid September is the end of their season and I’m sure it is much livelier earlier in the summer. Just wanted to mention George’s bar – fantastic place for a post dinner tipple – George is a lovely guy but be wary of his home made Raki!

Beach – small beach down a very steep hill or large numbers of steps. The beach has several different areas – we tended to go to the left as you reach the bottom of the hill – the first area is managed by a Scottish lady who charges 5Euro per day for two beds and a parasol. Further along the beds are free as long as you use the tavernas. We had a couple of leisurely lunches at the first tavern to the right – sardines, salad, retsina etc – great value.

Excursions – we booked two excursions through Thomas Cook – Hidden Halkidiki (Sithonia peninsular) and the Mount Athos trip. Both excursions were interesting but were spoilt as Thomas Cook book both English and German guests on the same trip and the number of Germans greatly exceeds the English guests and therefore most of the commentary is in German. We did complain to the representative and filled in customer report forms in resort and have subsequently written to Thomas Cook but so far have not received a response.

Overall I would recommend the Rigas hotel and would certainly recommend Afitos to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday in traditional surroundings.

The Rigas is a fantastic hotel. My sister and I have just returned from our 1 week visit from the 6th September. Natasha was a friendly, humorous and welcoming host. The hotel was spotless and our room had the most beautiful view over the sea. We did not use the pool, but thoroughly enjoyed eating our very adequate breakfast (with wonderful coffee!) on the terrace outside, enjoying the morning sun. We had some really good weather during our stay and would highly recommend this wonderful hotel to anyone. Afitos itself is quaint, charming, traditional and beautiful. There are a variety of restaurants in the village, the best of which we found to be Christos and Eteki. We would certainly return both to Afitos and to the Rigas.

The views from the Rigas are amazing. The staff were extremely helpful and the service was excellent. Afitos has plenty of restaurants. If you want something special try "The Yellow Wagtail and The Curly Hedgehog" down by the bakery. We went twice and the meals ,wine and the owner were unforgettable. We will definately be going again.

We were moved from Stamos hotel to Rigas the week before flying out as they had overbooked at the Stamos-what a move!!
The Rigas is in a prime location with stunning views of the coast-perfect for lounging by the pool or enjoying a relaxing evening drink in the modern bar.
Staff are friendly and the hotel rooms and communal areas are spotless. Rooms are good quality with fridge and decent air con (at no extra charge) and all have balconys that face the sea.
Only a short walk town centre and beach too.
All in all-would highly recommend this hotel-really relaxing stay and Afitos is a pretty, laid back town with plenty of tavernas and bars to work your way through!

This hotel was absolutely fabulous. just what the doctor ordered. We were totally relaxed as soon as we arrived. Natasha was such a warm and friendly person and so was all of her staff. The breakfast was really great, a lot of choice, and to eat on the veranda in the morning with that magical view so amazing. The stroll down to the beach was a little steep, but the view on the way down was awesome. The beach itself was beautiful, I could imagine shirley valentine sitting there with her glass of wine. beautiful clear waters, white sand, and lovely little taverners on the beach where you can sit and have a great lunch at a great price. The restaurants in afitos are within a short walk and are great value. Back to the hotel it was such a delight to stay at the Rigas, it was kept so well and immaculatly clean, great location. We will certainly be booking a holiday at the Rigas again soon. mrs sylvia birks. stoke-on-trent. staffordshire. may 2010.
