“Magical Christmas”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

Thanks to all the staff at Fefor for making Christmas this year one of the best ever. The first time we have gone away for Christmas week and we were not disappointed. The hotel is absolutely beautiful. This was our second visit having been before but in February 3 years ago. Ideal for Christmas though. Very cosy. Very Christmasy feel and the place is "chilled" out and relaxed. The staff were wonderful and make you feel like you are in your own home. Afternoon tea was a lovely unexpected treat after cross country skiing. We hope to return and hope others have as much fun as we did. If you want peace relaxing times and wonderful countryside this is a place to visit.

Room Tip: A lake view is nice

We arrived by car from Oslo and after a few hours drive, we discovered a magnificent scene in front of us, at +900m altitude.
The hotel personnel is very friendly and helpful, the dinner buffet was really nice for such a big restaurant (+300 seats!!)
The hotel is being used by bus groups, but it doesn't interfere your quiet stay too much.

BIG disappointment is the "pool" that isn't maintained anymore for quite some times obviously.
BIG plus is the ecxeptional view from the room!!! The room itself is simply furnished, but clean and large enough if you have big bags.

Room Tip: Lake view!

On a cold and rainy day, after getting caught in traffic jams in Oslo, and then encountering road construction and many detours on the way up north, we arrived at the tourist info in Lillehammer 10 minutes before they closed and the woman did not seem pleased that we showed up at the last minute. When we asked her to suggest accomodations around Vinstra, she asked why we wanted to stay in the mountains and showed us something closer to Lillehammer, off the highway. Now we were convinced that we wanted to go to the Vinstra area. In the booklet she gave us, we found the Fefor Hoifjellshotell and they had a vacancy.
We arrived in the evening after having been caught in the rain several times that day and were still slightly wet and very cold. The hotel lobby was warm and welcoming and the staff friendly and courteous, but what caught our eye immediately after walking into the lobby was the incredible view off the hotel's back porch- water, mountains, trees, sunset and the dampness after the rain- we just had to take it all in. When the staff helped us to our room, we realized that we had the same view from the room.
Our room was spacious- enough for our big bags, carry ons, and coats,- the beds were comfortable and everything clean. After getting settled we went outside and were able to hike down to the lake and enjoy the area around the hotel. Off the lobby were large sitting areas and a library, so my son and I had fun exploring before sitting down to coffee and tea.
We are happy we stayed here and would recommend it. The hotel is on the Peer Gynt road, off of the E6, but we took it from the start , just north of Lillehammer. It is a bit twisty and turny, not the best paved road, but it does provide absolutely beautiful views. The next day we went white water rafting, which is less than a half an hour away from the hotel

We spent a magical Christmas with perfect snow and food. We rented one of the cabins with my parents and two small children and did half board at the hotel restaurant. We had beef, elk on the day prior to and following Christmas eve and a HUGE and beautiful Christmas buffet on the 24th. The breakfast was plentiful. The view was beautiful. We went snowshoeing and x country skiing. I would bring a small sled if you are staying in the cabin and have small children (they gave us one), as it is quite a hike up for small legs. the cabin was quite nice, well equipped, though we didnt' make any big meals. Our cabin said it had 8 beds, which it did, but 4 of them were in a very cozy loft, and would sleep 4, but it would be very tight for 4 adults. The pool was fine, the sauna fine. The skating rink was a bit bumpy, but nice to have. The main lounges were really well decorated and very cozy. Santa came to visit and gave the children (parent provided) a gift. We all danced around the Christmas tree and sang carols on the 24th, which was really nice to do something Norwegian. We would go back.

  • Liked — The great view, wonderful food and cozy atmosphere
  • Disliked — cold walk from pool to changeroom

Yes, the rooms and corridors are a little basic, yes the food is better if you get there early, yes the waiter service is variable, and yes the evening entertainment is not great and alcohol is expensive BUT such a beautiful peaceful location, really friendly and helpful reception staff, gorgeous views out over the frozen lake from the cosy lounge and the (not quite so cosy!) pool, and just a couple of seconds from the ski hire shop and trails that start literally from the door...

We loved it!

On the whole, this is the sort of place you would expect from a cross country skiing hotel - great location, 400m from downhill slopes & lots of snow. However the hotel has military style corridors & rooms, the food & dining service leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you are vegetarian. Food was often cold and breakfast was reheated from the day before. Evening entertainment consisted of a pianist who played the same 10 songs at the same time each evening. Each day was like groundhog day, I wont be rushing back, skiing in Austria/France is a much more sensible option - much more reasonable too.
