“Just what was needed after the ferry”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

After a pleasant crossing to Santander, it was a joy to find this gem within an easy drive from the port where one could spread out a bit in a good sized room.

The hotel, the setting and the food were all excellent and reception could not have been more friendly

In hindsight, it would have been nice to stay there for two nights and probably miss out one of the other Paradors we stayed in.

Super place --try it out

Wow. Our last night of a 2,500 mile and 14 night road trip around Spain and we inadvertently saved the best for for last!

We arrived late afternoon at this lovely setting by the river and decided to check if they had a vacant room. We were hopeful given that we'd found a room easily each night as June is relatively quiet in many places and the car park here was not too full.

The two receptionists were very helpful and gave us a choice of rates based on different room types and breakfast being included or not.

In the end they upgraded us to a suite in the annex which was beautifully furnished, spacious and gave us a wonderful nights sleep.

The location is lovely, close enough to town to walk there if you wish, but tucked away so that you can hear the river. The main building is an old monastery which is steeped in history and is linked to the annex by a covered walkway.

We ate in the bar, food and drink were good and well priced. We plan to have breakfast in the restaurant here this morning.

Our only regret is that we can't stay another night as we go home on the Santander ferry tonight. On the plus side, it is an hour and a bit to the port on a good road and we know where to book when we come back!

Stopped overnight, our first stop on a car tour from Bilbao. Large spacious room with a view over the gardens, restful atmosphere. The regional cooking in the restaurant was excellent. We also found there were pedestrian pathways from right outside the hotel. The staff were helpful and we filled in a favourable questionnaire - and on return home found a thank you letter (only the second time in many years of travelling that this has happened). Interesting food round about (local cider and blue cheese reckoned to be the best in Spain) and outstanding views from the Mirador del Fito en route to the coast. We intend to return to do more walking round about.

I stayed here one night and found the parador quite lovely. We were upgraded to a larger room in the historic building, rather than the more modern annex wing built next door and connected via a covered walkway. The monetary was beautiful, with all of the standard limited amenities of the Spanish Paradores. The room, 114, had two windows that could be opened to get nice fresh air and hear the sounds of the river that ran next to the property. Nice breakfast with cooked to order items, and a large bathroom made this a great base to explore the Picos de Europa. This Parador is about 2.5 KMs from the main town, which has many restaurants and sidareas (Cider bars) which is a speciality of the area. Right next to the Parador was a tiny collection of houses which is called the New Town.. But the houses are a tally really old and it is worth a few minute wander around.

We stayed here on our 2000 mile journey to Lisbon. Easy to find, spacious rooms and good staff, this would make a good base from which to explore the Picos, or the local water activities.
The town of Cangas is 2km walk by the river if you need ' stuff', or just fancy a pre dinner stroll.
The restaurant in the Parador was busy, which gave it a good, buzzy atmosphere sometimes lacking in Paradors.
The food was good, filling, plentiful and the staff were very good. Parador breakfasts are iffy events, though. I always imagine them to be last night's dinner rehashed. Is this right?

travelling through the Picos we needed an overnight stop and opted for here as there was a great deal being offered. And then we got upgraded! Very sympathetic conversion of the old monastery. Lovely big room, very comfy bed, big bathroom. We were in the old building and it is peppered with dark wood antiques. We ate in for both dinner and breakfast and both meals were fine, if nothing to get excited about. Service is lovely. Wifi really only works in reception and the restaurant (conference rooms). Stone walls a metre thick don't help!! As has been commented, is is out of town.

The parador is a 20 minute walk out of town (not well indicated, but go below the bridge, up and follow the road at about 45°). Building is gorgeous, Good parking.
Very kind staff at check-in and in the bar and restaurant.
Large and comforteable room, but no tea kettle that I could find (but haven't looked very hard)
Good and pretty large bathroom
had dinner, very nice quality for the price.
Bar service was good, have seen worse in other paradores,
breakfast very good
