My sister and I stayed here 10 through 17 March 2012. This was at the end of the ski season yet we were made to feel like it was the start - Markus was a fabulous, friendly and jovial host and did everything possible to make our stay a very enjoyable one from check in to his friendly farewell as our bus disappeared.
I fell on the pistes and injured myself on the first day and Markus provided daily ice compressions and held a genuine concern for my well-being.
Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff who could teach Britain a thing a two about customer service!
Anyone who has a bad experience here must be those people who complain about everything because really at Hotel Unterbrau there is nothing to complain about.

Our room was basic but very comfortable, spotlessly clean on arrival and cleaned thoroughly every day. If you prefer a bath to a shower after a day on the slopes best to ask in advance - also for a balcony as not all rooms have one - I emailed Markus in advance and had a nice room (No 9) overlooking the front of the hotel towards the town and good open view of the snowy mountains beyond. This aspect also had the best of the sun from early morning till about 3. The location is very quiet - the only noise being the church bells which every place in the village would get so no blame on the hotel!

The daily menu was 3 courses starting with delicious home made soups and a main course selected the night before - normal for half-board ski holidays. Breakfast consisted coffee/tea (tip for Brits you may want to bring your own teabags as tea was fruity variety), large selection of cereals, nice bread and bread rolls, a selection of various cold meats and cheeses and hard boiled eggs. You could if you wish have a more cooked breakfast at a small extra charge but to be honest what is on offer is fine.

The hotel location is a 4-5 min stroll to the main gondola lift so well positioned.

Although the breakfast room didn't open until 7:30 the coffee and tea was on and we were able to go down earlier and bring a cup back to the room.

I read of some people complaining about the smallness of the dining room - again not justified - the hotel has a perfectly functional dining room that I would describe as cosy - we shared a table with people from Australia with whom we got on famously - life is what you make it!

To sum up - excellent value/cost ratio, very clean, friendly, well located.......can't say more!

We stayed at the "Unterbrau" between feb 4th and 11th we were a group of 8. Marcus & his family were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is in the town about 4 minutes walk to the ski hire shop and the base of the gondola, there is a flight of stone steps leading up to the hotel which can get a bit slippery but there is a hand rail for support. Once inside we were greeted by Marcus (the owners son) who allocated us our rooms and although it was quite late by the time we arrived had a hot meal ready for us in the dining room. We had a family room which consisted of one double and a single bed, a decent size wardrobe in which there was a free to use combination safe, we had a shower but no bath. The room was pretty basic but was spotlessly clean and nice and warm and the beds were comfortable. In the morning there was a buffet breakfast with plenty to eat and drink for even the fussiest diners, breakfast was served between 7.30 & 9.30. Dinner consisted of three courses with soup for starters followed by a local main course (which you chose the night before) and a sweet pudding. All the meals we had were very tasty and hot. There was a bar in the restaurant and the local wine was very drinkable. There is not much to do in the hotel in the evening but Marcus kept us entertained and was happy to tell us about the local area, and he always had a smile and a ready wit. The skiing in Austria is as good as anywhere we have stayed including Canada. The mountainside restaurants are good value and I urge you anyone to dry the plum dumplings. I cannot fathom some of the reviews I have read some people are just born miserable and all in all I cannot praise Marcus and his family and staff enough, we will return.

This was our first visit to the Hotel Unterbrau in Hopfgarten, well our first visit to Austria skiing after the last 5 years in France, Switzerland and Italy so with those experiences in mind we are probably best well suited to write a review.
A family run hotel our hosts the Bichler famly, well particularly Marcus kept us well informed and well entertained all week. The food and service wasvery good. We were a party of four apart from my wife an i, we took our 15 year old son and 11 year old daughter, so the hotel catered for teenagers without a problem. The Hotel is situated only five minute walk from the Gondola in the town which is fairly well uncomercialised which if you like a quiet town this is ideal.

Room Tip: both rooms had balconies, overlooking the resort which was ideal for us even though not connecting t...

A warm welcome and nice hot meal even though we were held up by flight delays. Marcus was a source of fun for the whole week and his sense of humour was a great addition to what was a great skiing holiday. The hotel was well situated a short walk from the gondola and the subsidised ski storage close to the lift system was a bonus. Food and service at the hotel was excellent and the rooms clean if perhaps a little small. Since I came to ski and only went to the room to sleep the size was not a serious issue for me. I would certainly recommend the hotel to others and would use for any future trip to Hopfgarten.

This is our 5th consecutive year at Hotel Unterbrau in Hopfgarten. We are a mixed group of 8-10 people (family and friends) who have been visiting Marcus and his family 5 years in a row. The reason we keep coming back is definitely the relaxed and cosy atmosphere that surrounds the hotel.. If you haven't had a good time while visiting Marcus and staff it is definitely your own fault.. Marcus is a great character who isn't afraid of messing with his guests. He is always prepared with a witty comment on whatever you have to say but at the same time he is extremely service minded if you need anything other than what is already offered he do the best he can to arrange it.. The Hotel itself is a beautiful old building, it is not a 5 star resort but they clean your room and turn your beds down every day. Breakfast is always plenty and dinner is a three course meal always starting with soup (which is fantastic after a full day of boarding) and if you still feel hungry after 1st serving you can always ask for seconds.. The bar prices at the hotel are a lot cheaper than anywhere else you would go in Hopfgarten and the hotel restaurant is a nice place to sit in the evenings, playing cards, having a drink and chatting with the other guests and of course Marcus. Another brilliant thing is the location of the Hotel. It takes about 5 minutes to walk up to the gondolas that will take you up to the largest skiing area in all of Austria.. We love staying here and we will keep coming back for as long as Marcus will put up with us.. So Thank you for having the best and friendliest hotel in Austria..

Room Tip: Nothing to do with the rooms i suspect that they are all the same. However if you want free parking...

We have just returned from this hotel. We found the couple very unfriendly! When I asked for a glass of water I was given a small bottle at 2euros!! I think the fact that we did not drink every evening at the hotel put their backs up a bit. The woman was positively hostile to us and we were made to feel quite uncomfortable overall. Also the dining room was very small and we had to share a table with another couple. The food was done "on the cheap" and was ok I suppose but we had small portions and no bread with the soup. Overall we would never stay there again. Every other small hotel in Austria has been fantastic and friendly but the Underbrau is not one of those. Hopfgarten itself is a lovely place and we will visit again but will not be staying at the Unterbrau.

Other reviewers have said how friendly the Unterbrau is, yet we didn't feel this very much. Marcus was very chatty at breakfast but apart from this and a bit of chit chat from the lady who served dinner we didn't get the impression that we were valued guests! Food was ok, we ate everything that was put in front of us, it was good filling food with not much flair. Rooms were clean and warm and we were very grateful indeed to have a bath, which was fantastic to relax in after a long day on the piste. Others have said pretty much what we want to say about the Unterbrau so will keep this brief. The best thing for us was the fact that this is a completely NON SMOKING hotel, rare in Austria and the worse was the noisy dining room. With only a one hour gap for dinner, the dining room was always full and it isn't really big enough to cater for all comfortably, tables were a bit squashed in and we had to share a table with other guests, they were a nice couple but we would have preferred to have eaten alone.......... so for this reason alone we wont be going back.
