“Luxurious, but not the winter escape we hoped for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2010

Its a bit like your local Chinese take away restaurant with a grand title.  Perhaps a bit of an unfair statement, but couldn't help myself with such a name.

Its a nice little complex of villas, however we would not recommend goi
ng there for a number of reasons.

Yes, it is luxurious and located away from the mass tourism of Tenerife, however... it doesn't actually allow you to stay away in the mass tourism of Tenerife. Reason why? Its small and claustrophobic.  So lets start with the issues:

1) Our villa had a pool, but it was neither a pool to swim nor a Jacuzzi, also our terrace/pool area was right onto a road with views onto (and from) the golf driving range. This offered no feeling of privacy whatsoever.  Speaking of privacy, the "Bali” style outdoor shower offered "nice" views for anyone on a balcony in the villas above!

2) The villas are actually apartments with full kitchens, wash machines etc, which is great, however if you are after an apartment, I am sure there are better offers out there. If you are after an apartment, this is certainly not value for money.

3) Design is a very personal thing, however only after leaving did we realise after leaving that there are some serious flaws: The place is extremely small, with one "big” pool at reception, a "gourmet wannabe” restaurant and a tiny spa in "the dark".   Perhaps it was just us, but we felt claustrophobic if we stayed in the complex. Why did we not stay in the villas? They were crammed with design furniture, which is subjective taste, however what is more objective is the fact that our villas and others are dark inside.  If you are looking for an escape from the European winter cold, this place just does not feel right.

4) Location is far from great, unless you are a golf fan, but even then, a villa facing a road is not great. Actually, you need a car if you are staying there, otherwise you will be taxiing it all the time to store or other restaurants. Its far from any walks, other restaurants, beech or any other attraction than a golf course and golf driving range.  Also, worth mentioning is that you see very little of nature.  Unlike the second place we stayed at (Abama) there were no palm trees, bushes, flowers or birds singing in the trees.

So why is it so highly rated?

1) Free unlimited WIFI internet access is great, but then again you have that at home...

2) The staff is friendly

3) Its not a room, its an apartment that you get with a living room, bedroom(s), pool area, bar area, kitchen and washroom.  All in good quality too. We actually had 3 TVs in our villa.

In summary, yes it is a nice luxurious place to stay in, but for the money you are paying we would recommend a place like Abama instead. We are actually into boutique hotels and not huge hotels, but during our stay on Tenerife we actually felt more private and intimate in our Abama villa apartment with loads of green, numerous pools and great food.   If you are looking for a luxurious dose of sun a short flight away from Europe in winter, Royal Garden Villas is not the place. Try Abama instead. (I think we should ask to get paid by Abama for this).

This is the 2nd time I've stayed in RGV and I was not dissappointed.

This time I stayed with friends, 4 girls we went to relax while on a holiday in Tenerife.

The place is wonderful, the staff really helpful and friendly, the food is delicious - I would recommend and I will be returning.

Big thanks to Fiona the manager who arranged an upgrade for us and Cava on arrival, the girls where shocked and are still talking about it.

We went with the taster menu for dinner, and it was really exciting not knowning what was in front of you until the lift the lid off and you go "wowwwww" the wine was amazing and Axel is just brilliant... thanks

If you are looking for a place with a difference that is clean and the staff are friendly - then book RGV, you will not be disappointed - the place is well worth a visit.

See you soon

We arrived outside a pair of large wooden doors with just a stone engraved plaque with the name Royal Garden Villas letting us know we were at our destination. As they swung open it was clear we were entering a beautiful oasis of tranquility and class. We were offered a nice glass of cava whilst we checked in and were then taken to our villa. We had booked a two bed superior and were given a three bedroom villa, I guess as a complimentary upgrade. And what a wonderful villa it was, the attention to detail was amazing, I truly think you will struggle to find a better villa anywhere in the world, from the luxurious beds to your own private swimming pool and plunge pool, fully stocked bar to the little ornaments dotted around the rooms. We had read about the "noise" from the road but we never noticed it at all, possibly as we were a floor up. There are 27 villas in total and from talking to the staff they work on a prefferred occupancy of 80% so it never seems busy. The Spa was great for the days were the weather was unkind and we had a good game of racketball in the squash court whilst my wife had some of the treatments and was very impressed. We hired a car and used the underground car park which was very convienient. A word about the restaurant, we enjoyed the breakfasts very much and were looked after by the wonderful staff, all of whom were very pleasant and helpful. We had one meal in the evening, as we like eating out and the quality and standard was very very high. A quick thank you to Fiona who on hearing it was our daughters birthday had a cake waiting in our villa on our return from the beach.

I could go on but words do not put into justice the high quality of this place,my family and I have stayed at some of the best hotels and villas in the world and these are up there at the very top. We are already looking forward to going back later this year.

Highly recommended.

We were booked in to this resort as a package over New Year and the reviews on this site looked good so i was hoping that it would be OK. Well it was. The first thing that you think when you arrive is that you are in Indonesia as so many of the details and furniture is from there. It is fantasticaly well detailed and the complex is made up of two lines of villas set into what would have been a steep rocky slope. In saying that there are no long flights of steps and the villas from the outside are just beautiful with fabulious interiours. It looks like all have pools and seating sun bathing areas and the bathrooms are excellent as well. The issue with car and traffic noise, OK we had a villa which overlooks the golf driving range and a road ran between that , some ten foot below and about eight feet from the balcony. It was fine ,realy it was totaly silent at night and during the day it was not anything which caused a problem. Of the 28 or so Villas, 25 were occupied but we hardly saw anyone one, it was almost deserted with just people going to and from breakfast ,so very tranquile. The spa is a good place to go at the end of the day with a lovely warm indoor pool with lots of bubble massage jets to try out. Eating out , the best places we found were in Del Duque ,just a short taxi drive away. Re taxis if going out in the evening get reception to get you one, and then get them to call you at your room when it arrives as it can take 20 mins or so.

Well what a surprise when we arrived. We had gone for a fortnight's winter sun and fancied the privacy that a Villa offers, but just couldn't believe what awaited us. Staying in Villa Kentia which is right next door to reception was an advantage, but having said that there are only 27 or 28 Villas in the complex, so distance within the complex isn't an issue. When we we first shown into the Villa, we were speechless and the young girl showing us around must have smiled to her self, as we didn't say a word during the entire tour. Large spacious living room with adjoining kitchen, en suite bedroom, large patio area and private plunge pool. That was just the ground floor, upstairs was another en suite bedroom, patio area and jacuzzi. Sun loungers on both upper and lower patios. The interior decoration was absolutely unique, with a great attention to detail, but they do say that the devil's in the detail and this was no exception. Twice daily change of towels, morning and evening and daily supply of ice for the mini bar. In the kitchen, micro wave oven, fridge, kettle, dishwasher and tablets, oven and hob and enough crockery, pots pans and cutlery etc. Three wide screen television, one in each bedroom and the other in the living room. Panoramic views over the golf driving range of the mountains to the left and Costa Adje and the Atlantic ocean to the right. Location wise, a little out of town, but by car or the local bus service, no problem.

The Staff - well you couldn't wish to meet nicer people. The Manageress was Fiona who comes from Dublin originally and supported in Reception by Isabel, Marlene and the team. In the restaurant the maître d'hôtel was Axel supported by Niko and the team. We stayed Half Board and on some evenings we had the restaurant to ourselves, even at breakfast there was always plenty of room. The quality and service in the restaurant was sublime.

We have stayed in several 5* rated accommodation over the years and if the choice of category was left to me then the Royal Garden Villas should be categorized as 6*.

An absolute must for any golfer wanting sheer style and luxury.

Once again thank you all for such a wonderful holiday and I will be returning soon

We stayed for one week in January 2010 - myself, husband, two-year-old daughter and nanny. We stayed in villa Aqua, it was completely superb. Beautiful sitting room, lovely outdoor space, large heated pool, luxurious bathrooms, huge comfy beds (two bedrooms) and great views to the stunning mountains on one side and the sea on the other. We chose RGV because it offered the flexibility of a villa holiday for our young daughter and nanny (two hotel rooms would not have come close to this) with the facilities of a hotel. It was wonderful to have the luxury of a beautiful buffet breakfast and it was also great to be able to bring in supplies from the local supermarket (we hired a car) for lunches/snacks. The villa was cleaned every day and small things like washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs were all provided. If we forgot anything at the supermarket reception brought it to us at very short notice, we really couldn't have asked for more. We didn't eat at the restaurant but had room service a couple of times and the food was excellent. A lovely cot bed was provided for our daughter with gorgeous bed linen with animals on it - the small touches like this really impressed me. Staff couldn't do enough to help, they were all so friendly and I must give a special mention to Nico in the restaurant who was fantastic with our daughter who found it hard to sit still at breakfast!
We have stayed in some amazing five star hotels - recently (before children) in the Maldives, Dubai and Oman and RGV matched these. We didn't think we'd find such a lovely hotel complex in Tenerife (long haul flights are a no no now we have children) and we will most certainly be returning for winter sun next year. We also spent lots of time at Del Dulche beach which was lovely, the water was perfect and the cafes great - thanks to one reviewer who recommended the Mirador restaurant there with the terrace overlooking the sea - super, as was the Italian restaurant recommended by another reviewer in La Caletta - very pretty village by the sea.
The weather was also very good though a little annoyingly it was quite cloudy at times. Building work across the back of the hotel was sometimes quite noisy but it didn't bother us. The road also didn't bother us at all, we were one level up and it was absolutely fine - I had been worried after reading reviews about the road noise but it really wasn't a problem.
We will most certainly be returning next year, we had a super time.

Summary: Awesome rooms, great food and service, reasonable value, slightly poor location due to the road meaning you loose some of that 'being away from it all feeling'

Am actually writing this from the room on our last night. We're having a romantic getaway from the big smoke in Jan and headed for Tenerife due to the temp and easy cheap flights.

The hotel is stunning. I've stayed in quite a few boutique hotels but this one is different. It's all about the room and they are really nice. The attention to detail is astounding. Having your own kitchen is nice too. They provide a minimarket service or you can pop down to the shop and get some odds and ends if you prefer. The balcony and plunge pool make it really hard to leave the room. Just what we wanted.

Resaraunt is excellent too. In particular service by the maitre di was exceptional as was the tasting menu. Reasonably priced too. 5 course meal for two with a glass of wine with each course. 160Euros in total. Not quite Hospital Road but getting there.

Downside of the restaraunt is it's too much to do every night. You have to go out.

The BIG down is the road. We stayed in the basic one bed villa (incidentally I don't think you get much for your money if you upgrade to the larger one bed villas, but the 2 bed ones look amazing). Compared with a normal hotel room though they really are nice. In fact it's not just the noise it's the privacy. It's far enough out of town make getting to shops/bars a taxi only affair, but it doesn't feel remote. It's a shame.

I totally enjoyed our stay though. Would come back but would probably come with a friend and stay in a 2 bed but not the 1 bed again, simply because of the road.

It's worth reiterating that this hotel does not feel like a normal hotel. It feels small and personal. Even in the 1 bed's you feel like the hotel isnt' full (and i think it is)
