“We Loved It....”
Reviewed January 17, 2007

My wife, 16yr old & I spent Xmas 2006 at Guayarmina. We booked with Thompsons.

We were encouraged by the reviews both here & on Thompsons own review site. And I'm pleased to report that it was indeed a very nice stay. Room was really nice & bigger than expected, We were in Room 251, which was one floor below the reception (I think!) - The lift operation, and how to get from room to pool, or to outdoors, or dining etc. was confusuing. It took several days to get it sorted, and I'm sure others will find it a similar challenge.
Anyway... the room was very nice, comfortable and we had a view of the sea over a small square/turning area and out over to the isalnds. Sunset was obscured from the balcony unfirtunatly, but the balcoiny was spacious but only 2 plastic chairs.

The general ambiance of the hotel was fab, waiting staff (all except one misery in the dining room) were superb, and the food was varied & excellent. I traveled with 2 vegetarians and they found the buffet each night offered so much choice. Drinks/wine with dinner prices weren't too bad, but a little pricey in & around the hotel generally.

The lifts were bonkers, as pointed out in other reviews. Some breakdowns whilst there. We all got stuck at least once between floors! - But these were being worked on whilst we were there.

Evening shows were alright. Nothing super special but as good as you'd get in most resorts of this type.

Very clean, cleaners in every day, although one roach did find our room! -

The attention to detail all round the hotel is excellent and sets a benchmark for others.

We did'nt have a problem with power? - My son was on his play station much of the time, so that was either pluged in or charging batteries. We also charged up camara batteries etc without fuss nor letter from management?

The excursions weren't cheap, but they were good. This is the first "Package" holiday I've been on in years, and the first with Thomson. It was really enjoyable and found Thomson's very professional. I'll use them again next year, and would whole-heartedly recommend the Guayamina Princess.

The sea front action is but a short walk away, but we were never disturnbed by the action from the front in the whole time we were there.

Beer & food can be cheap down on the front. Shop around, there are some great little beverage places there.

My 16 year old son hooked up with some similar aged kids from the hotel and whilst my wife & I enjoyed cocktails & Piano tunes, they were off exploring the sights & sounds of the sea frount. Beware!- there are bars down there teens will love, and the drink gets very cheap, So expect ignored curfews!!

I hope this review helps others as previous reviews helped us.

Hi just returned from hols,(31/12/06-14/01/07)I have seen this hotel on previous visits to the area and always thought must be a great place to stay.I would say we were 90% happy with our stay.
Overall its friendly, generally clean and weather was fab!!! It was 38 degrees at 4pm on sun 14 jan!
I would say that i agree with some other comments made, towels on beds early and only used from 2pm onwards, drinks are very expensive-2.20euros for a small water that is 20 cents in the shop accross the road, other nationalities seem to forget you are there especially when waiting for lifts.
food was very good considering how many they were catering for.
We never had any problems with electricals, mine were always on view inc ghd straightners. We would definately go back despite my main gripe that tv was limited,BBC news,CNN and Eurosport being the only english speaking channels,We didnt go away to sit in front of a tv but a little variety would be nice.
I also thought a fridge would be ideal but @3.90 euros a days hire as well as 2.10 for safe hire a day-(6 euro in total) you can spend £70 for 2 wks as soon as you check in.I suppose it means you have to buy overpriced drinks if you dont have your own chiller. Please dont be put off by any negatives in any feedback its worth it for the location and views.
Maintenance was started on our 2nd wk but it was done with least disruption to guests, bearing in mind a hotel open 52 wks a yr has to do this at some time.any way,we shall be back next yr as we fully relaxed and enjoyed our time there, and with weather like we had so would you!!! ENJOY!!!

This is our third visit to this hotel, the last time was in 2002. I was disappointed that the hotel had not had any updating since our last visit and the bedrooms and most public rooms were shabby with faded and worn furniture and bedding. However, the towels were brand new, so perhaps the hotel owners are going to gradually get around to upgrading the rest of the place.
On the plus side, the location is great - on the sea front and with easy walking to great bars and resaurants and to the nearby fishing village of La Caleta. Food choice at breakfast and dinner remains good and varied and you would have to be a very fussy eater to not find something that appeals.

Stayed at this hotel for New Year from 29Dec-05Jan07, the hotel was full and the resort busy. We booked the holiday with Portland/Holiday, the reps didnt bother to travel on the coach to and from the airport and little was mentioned about the area around the hotel during the welcome meeting too busy pushing there own excursions.

The best part of the holiday was New Years Eve, the hotel put on a Gala Dinner and entertainment until the early hours the evening was excellent real party atmosphere recommend this to anyone. Four course meal and wine/champayne. Our evening finished around 4am but the party was still going strong in the hotel. But beware the drinks double in price for this one night!!

Overall the holiday was excellent but I have a few moans about the hotel. Last visited this hotel in 2000 the service & quality was much better then. The hotel looks like it needs updating inside, during the week we stayed our maid didnt once clean the bath and only swept the room once. The pool area needed cleaning everyday but this didnt happen. There is no waiter service around the pool area and the bar area wasnt inviting. The food was OK but nothing special and quite bland at times. The restaurant had a canteen atmosphere.

The entertainment was varied at night but some nights a little cheesy, all the guest come to watch the entertainment and then leave even though the bar is open and the resident DJ plays until the early hours. Felt it lacked atmosphere. Staff were not that friendly either. The guests in the hotel were very friendly all full of the party spirit.

The beach area outside the hotel is like blackpool with tacky shops and bars but if you take a short walk the bars and shops are much more up market.

Would visit the area again but not this hotel, but the weather was fabulous 25-30 degress clear blue sky everyday.

We have just returned from a 1 weeks' stay at this hotel and our first impressions from the outside of the hotel and also of the magnificent lobby entrance and piano bar was WOW!

We were welcomed by the friendly staff and let me say that during the whole of our stay, the staff were excellent. They were welcoming and friendly and tended to any of our needs. Nothing was a problem for them.

Our room was situated on level 1(3 floors under the reception level - it did get confusing, but we sussed out the set up of the hotel on our last day!) Our room was clean and spacious and consisted of 2 single beds and then a partitioning half wall leading into a sitting area. This is where my son aged 5 slept on a camp bed! Not very comfortable and it was broken! The hotel staff sorted this problem out and he was given a proper bed. The position of the room was on the main road, so at about 1am onwards there was usually some singing and loud talking coming from other people passing by our balcony on the main road - but we soon got used to this.

The New Years Eve Gala was excellent - plenty of free wine and the food was lovely. Infact the food couldn't be faulted only that it was repetitive.

My only real 'niggles' with this hotel was that as a mother of a 5yr old non-swimmer the pool didn't cater for his needs. The depth of the pool would range from 77cm to 130cm quite fast and with no ropes or such like to seperate the two areas. I found that I had to constantly monitor him or go into the pool with him in order for him to be safe. It would have been useful to have had one of the sunloungers near this shallower area to monitor him better, but usually these had been taken at a very early hour indeed. However, there was a lifeguard on duty which I thought was good. The hotel entertainment was good and varied but I felt that it was geared more towards the older client. Music such as The Drifters, Abba and Bingo were common.

Upon reading other reviews regarding electrical equipment I was concerned about taking any, but I decided to hide it in my case when it wasn't being used. Upon arrival we received a letter telling us that we could only use the hairdryers that were provided in the room and a razor - so be careful if you take anything else with you. Check-out is also at 12pm, so if you need a late check-out like we did, then because the hotel is so popular then we couldn't keep our room on and we didn't fly until 3.45am the next day so bear this in mind.

Overall the hotel is stunning with a great central location to the beach and the staff were fantastic.

Hi

Just got back from a week's stay at the Guayarmina Princess and must say that we had a great time and loved the hotel.

We went for a relaxing break and got that exactly except the weather was pretty changeable, but managed to get four days of sunshine.

Looking at the last review not sure I agree with the cleanliness comments. I have to say it is one of the cleanest hotels I have stayed at. The maids did an excellent job on our room everyday and was clean as a whistle.

The public areas of the hotel were sparkling - I came down earlier one morning to stop the Germans nabbing the best sunbeds - and saw no less than seven cleaners working on the reception area, bar, and by the pool.

Also whilst we were there they repainted several areas of the hotel, that did not look that bad to me. The white areas round the pool, pillars and some of the walls were re-painted but were done very early in the morning and did not affect the people staying at the hotel.

We went with Portland Direct (Thomson) and found the flights great, transfers quick and a good service.

Positives

1. LOCATION away from the hustle bustle but near enough to get there and literally metres to the beach
2. CLEANLINESS very clean hotel - a credit to the staff
3. FOOD - not mentioned above but food is really good - good variety and good quality
4. FACILITIES - great pool area, squash/tabble tennis/pool etc.

Negatives (more like niggles really)

1. SOME NOISE - we were in a holiday hotel so noise is just a fact of life and did not stop us sleeping. Glad we asked for a high floor as cabaret can go on until just before midnight.
2. LIFTS - bit of a nuisance waiting for the lovely glass lifts sometimes - nothing major though

I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be going back next year.

What I know:

Go to the beach bar at sunset or later in the evening to look at the sea and stars for the romantic in you. (Beach bar is out of the hotel, down the back lifts, towards the beach and is about 150yds along on the left). Drinks aren't cheap but setting is worth it.

After seeing some of the points about use of your own electrical equipment - we just hid ours in cases or draws - phone chargers, straighteners etc. - not an issue then.

It says staellite TV in rooms - expect Sky News, BBC World and Eurosport to be the English channels - not the best selection.

Happy Hour at the Piano Bar is only for selected drinks - try the Tequila Sunrise!

  • Liked — Cleanliness
  • Disliked — Attitude and politeness of some other nationalities staying in the hotel - same anywhere though

This holiday was for our Ruby wedding anniversary.
We found this hotel to be a beautiful hotel. The staff in general were very pleasant. Food we found was excellent. A large variety every day.
However, the room cleaning leaves much to be desired. The first 2 days was okay. But the next 11 where very poor. The making up of the bed wasnt as tidy as we would expect. If you left anything on the tops of cupboards. It was wiped around and not taken off and cleaned underneath. This might be okay for some people, but it was not what I would expect in a 4* hotel.
But worst of all, was the cleaning of the bathroom. The same here, if you left anythihg on the vanity unit around the washbasin.
it was not taken off and cleaned underneath. I think this is unnaceptable. The floor was not cleaned efficiently. There was always some dirt left around corners and behind doors.
I complained about this after our 4th day. They sent someone up to clean it again while we were having our evening meal. We came back in and found it exactly the same. I phoned down and mentioned this. They came and cleaned again while we went for a drink. Came back & still no different. Phoned again, came again to clean & it was still exactly the same. At this point I gave up as we didnt want to ruin our holiday. I thought that this must be there general standard of cleaning.
They also ask you to put towels on floor if you want them renewed. On one occasion when we did this. We strongly believe that our towels were taken up off the floor and put back on the towel rail. They were all creased and untidy. On all other days they were obviously washed and ironed. And put tidyilly on rail.
On our last day there, the room was cleaned excellently. It was a different cleaning lady than the other days. I then went again to mention to reception about our previous days. And the way our room was cleaned on our last day. I mentioned how I had come to the conclusion about the standard of there cleaning. They said that it certainly isnt there standard. They then offered an apology, but no more than that.
Having said all of the above. We would probably go there again. But keep an eye on the cleaning.
