“The 'Economy' Rooms Are Awful”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

When we first walked into our hotel room at the Buryatia Hotel in Ulan Ude, we got quite a shock. We have become used to Russian hotels that are generally of a good standard, with some being very good. We were not expecting the poor standard that we found at the Buryatia. It is by far the worst hotel room we have seen in Russia, having stayed in a number of hotels over the past few weeks.

We had intentionally looked for somewhere that was low to mid range on the budget scale but, at $75 per night, we expected much better than this. By comparison, the Szvezda Hotel in Irkutsk was only slightly more expensive but was a very nice hotel. This place is decrepit.

The Buryatia Hotel’s only claim to fame seems to be that it is the ‘tallest hotel in Ulan Ude’ which doesn’t translate to anything of benefit for the occupant.

The only twin room available was the ‘Economy Twin’ at the equivalent of $75. The standard twin costs more than an additional 50%. We have since discovered that the ‘standard’ rooms are the renovated rooms whilst the ‘economy’ rooms look like they haven’t been touched-up since soviet times.

On the positive side – the beds are comfortable, there is private parking and there is free wifi (when it works properly, as it is sporadic.

On the negative side – appalling bathroom, thin and frayed towels, old and stained carpet with pieces missing along the edges, dirty walls and floors, rusty fridge, a faulty lock on the door, a room heater that doesn’t work, an unknown lump of something on the carpet and, for the two days that we were there, the hot water was only available for certain hours of the day, as repairs were being conducted.

The maid came whilst I was in the room and was finished within two minutes - made the beds, changed the towels and emptied the trash (no cleaning).

The attached photos should help to paint the picture.

Typical Soviet style hotel. Reasonably priced rooms are very small with bathrooms that leak, clog and have other problems. More expensive rooms are bigger. We chose the latter. Breakfast is okay, but the sparsest we've had in three weeks in Russia and Mongolia. Wi Fi costs $ and often does not work once you have paid. House keeping often fails to replenish essentials. Our most annoying problem concerned a bathroom towel. We accidentally stained a small, thin frayed one and the front desk called us saying we needed to pay the equivalent of $60 for it. Even the front desk staff were embarrassed, but they kept calling some anonymous manager who laid down the law. We tried to reason with them saying that we were happy to pay but it needed to be a fair price. The manager, who never appeared, but spoke through the staff, absolutely refused. We told them we would replace it and then bought one of better quality in town for $4. We asked them for our old towel back and they again refused. Be careful.

Room Tip: Room not on the square are quieter.

Best reason to stay here...location. Buy your bus tickets to Ulaan Baatar from the travel office in the same building, and walk round the corner in the morning to catch it. Bus leaves too early for the free breakfast. No free wifi unless you pay for an expensive room.

Ugly in that way the Soviets were so good at, but okay for a short stay. The room was clean, everything worked, the breakfast a bit minimalist but reasonably tasty. Decent location, about five minutes' walk to the Lenin-head square and 10 minutes to the pedestrianized shopping street. In provincial Russia, you could do way worse.
