“Great Review this time!!!!!”
Reviewed April 19, 2011

I reviewed this hotel in november and I must say I was not impressed there were a lot of issues with the service and food at the time, hubby and I have just returned to try it again and wow! what a difference, to start with there is a new manager in the hotel and she is certainly doing a great job in making improvements, we never had an issue with the hotel itself at the time as it is fabulous, very modern, clean with 2 great golf courses, we did play on the Emerald course during our stay this time and this was absolutely beautiful, excellent condition, the greens were brilliant for the time of year and we thoroughly enjoyed our golf. We had a very nice sized room overlooking the golf course this was spotless.
Regarding the service and food in the hotel this was first class, we found all the staff to be very helpful and pleasant, we dined in the bar in the evening the service here was extremely efficient and the food was lovely, breakfast was very pleasant, a lovely selection on the buffet bar including fresh oranges and grapefruit and not tinned which made a very nice change, the cooked breakfast was also very good and we could not fault the service, we really can't wait to go back and i am just so glad we decided to give it another try this really is a gem of a hotel now and I highly recommend it, well done to the new manager!

The only thing I can say that is negative about the hotel and facilities is that the put up bed for our 13 year old was not very good, a bit too springy - her stay would have been much more enjoyable if the bed had been more substantial - there was sufficient room in the bedroom for a small sofa bed which would have given her a much better sleep. Plus why when you book the room for 3 people do you still only get two cups and saucers? having said that additional cups and milk were provided quickly once requested. The hotel is new and was very quiet when we were there (Sunday and Monday). The spa and pool/gym are also very new and the hot stones treatment I had was very good value (check out for the special offers). Husband and daughter enjoyed the Sapphire Course and there was no need to book in advance. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and had a very enjoyable meal, we expected hotel prices however the quality of the food and service were excellent. Overall a very enjoyable stay and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Dear Gilliemay,

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay at Macdonald Hill Valley Golf, Hotel & Spa. It is great to see you and your family thoroughly enjoyed your stay.

In the last week we have placed an order for new beds to convert 15 of our rooms into family rooms, also offering the flexibility to golf and spa groups with a view to be able to accommodate 3 guests in one room (and saving a single supplement). This will undoubtedly improve the bed quality for sharers and I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back so that your daughter can, after having enjoyed some more golf, experience the new beds for herself. (your feedback with regard to the extra cups and saucers has been shared with the housekeeping team so that they can avoid a repeat of the same and I was pleased to see that they reacted promptly upon your request)

It was great to read your husband and daughter enjoyed the golf on the Sapphire course and whilst there was availability and opportunity to book on the day on this occassion, I would recommend future visitors to book their tee-times in advance. Both courses can get extrememly busy in particular from April through to September so booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

We have recently introduced new menus and we are pleased that you enjoyed both the food, service and attractive pricing. At Macdonald Hotels we hold the quality of our produce in very high regard and this shows in the exceptional feedback we receive be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

You mentioned you would not hesitate to return and we look forward to having the opportunity to welcoming you back in the near future. As you mentioned, there are always good offers availble when booking the hotel directly, be it for business, leisure, golf or spa so please do contact us for any future requirements. The latest addition to the spa offering, the Lava Shells treatment has taken off really well and introductory offers are currently available.

With Warm Regards.

Stayed at the hotel on a two night golf/spa break March 8/9th. Arrived early and had to wait for rooms but not a problem as a very pleasant reception area. Room was lovely, overlooking the 18th green - very spacious with tea/coffee making facilities, nice comfy chairs, minibar which you could request to be stocked or just use as a fridge. My partner who is the golfer managed to get a game of golf with two members and really enjoyed the course, I myself had the hot stone full body massage - lovely - spa facilities were very nice - pool and gym looked good too but ending up just chilling out. Went into Chester on the Wednesday - took up the park and ride as recommended by Ruth in the restaurant - lovely city - loads of very nice but very expensive shops! One of the guys who had played gold recommended a pub called The Swan at Marbury which was 3 1/2 miles through the lanes from from the hotel, excellent meal and even though the pub was quiet that night a very friendly and welcome atmostphere. The meals were cooked to order, were excellent and very good value for money.

The surprise early retirement went brilliantly at this fantastic location. Every request I made relating to the booking of around 20 individuals, before and during the stay, was met with a 'can do' attitude. The golf and spa facilities were excellent, food was fantastic and the rooms were large but with a cosy feel. For me though, the most impressive thing about the whole stay was the staff. Without exception, everyone we came across, in whatever situation, greeted us with a smile and 'hello'. The general ethos and atmosphere of the venue seems to be one of a professional and efficient service with a genuine interest in its individual customers. Will be going back and would highly recommend.

My wife and I spent a couple of nights at Hill Valley for our Wedding Anniversary over New Year. We booked an Executive Room DBB package. The quality of service given by the staff was excellent - indeed one could almost say over attentive in the Restaurant if such a thing can be said.
We did have an issue with heating in our room which was dealt with very effectively by a member of staff providing us with a portable warm air heater. There was also a small matter of an overcooked breakfast on the first morning but all in all we would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to friends and family.

My partner and I booked the New Years Eve residential gala dinner package which turned out to be a bargain at £120 pp. Upon arrival we entered a warm and welcoming reception area and we were greeted by a male receptionist who checked us in in an efficient manner. Our room was situated near to the lift entrance and when my partner requested a move (worried about noisy party goers the next morning), the receptionist moved us further down the corridor to room 208 without question. The room was one of the largest hotel bedrooms I've stayed in at a 4* and included a super king size bed and seating area, more like a mini suite than a standard room. As we explored the hotel we soon realised that the main negative is the fact that you have to walk outside to the spa and leisure complex. My partner and I decided not to use the large pool as we did not want to walk outside with wet hair to get back to our room. A real shame as we had looked forward to using the leisure facilities and it would be quite simple to attach a covered walkway to the side of the hotel. It was lovely to have piped music into the bathroom whilst getting ready and to also have a mirror that did not steam up so I could apply my make-up! The gala dinner kicked off with a champagne reception which saw the staff topping up our glasses (not just one glass like some hotels offer). We were concerned about the seating plan being a couple on our own on New Years Eve but we need not have worried as the hotel had even thought about that by sitting 5 individual couples together on the same table. This was so well planned as we had a great time chatting to new people and felt as though we fitted in with the other larger parties in attendance. The gala dinner was simply outstanding with each of the 5 courses arriving hot and at the same time. The beef was exceptional and the chef should be congratulated on his culinary abilities as everyone on our table commented on how excellent the food was. The band that played were very good but it would have been nice to dance to some more modern music as well as the older classics (my partner and I are young 40 year olds' and there were others there a lot younger than us) and I think the band should have finished at 23.30 with the DJ seeing in the New Year. The DJ did the countdown but it was a little rushed as he had to stop the band. The actual seeing in of the new year is the only other criticism that I have as it could have been better if there had been fireworks/piper/large screen etc... although dancing to Old land syne was memorable. We did not go to bed until after 2am, but the hotel was quiet and we had a great nights sleep. The late breakfast until 12 then next day with a late check out of 1pm were both extremely welcomed and these things alone would encourage us to book again next year. To sum it up, it was a memorable New Years Eve made special by the attentive staff, a wonderful chef and a good value for money package. There's always room for improvement however, and I would urge the hotel to consider a closed in walkway to the spa facility and to organise the seeing in of the New Year with a bit more of a bang! See you next year if we can get a sitter!
