This is a dog friendly pub, and was recommended to us by some friends as a friendly value for money place to eat. We stopped off recently on our way to Chester on what was a wet miserable day. How refreshing to receive a warm welcome, and a "warm" pub. The food was nicely presented , and we thought was very good value. The owners both took time out to come and chat with us, which was really nice.. Well worth a visit.

The Horse and Jockey at Grindley Brook Whitchurch has an amazing ambiance created specially for the good old English pub lover by two very hard working and knowledgeable publicans, Helen and Steve. The atmosphere is welcoming and sincere and walking boots and dogs are at ease in the bar. There is an excellent choice of real ales and the food is nothing less than an explosion of taste sensations. Staff make every effort to tailor the menu exactly to your desires even if what you ask for is not actually on the menu. If they have it in the larder they will serve it for you.
I have visited this pub/restaurant many times in the last year and always been delighted with the quality of food, drink and service. Trainee landlords should visit this pub to find out how an .English pub can be run. I booked a lunch meal there later in the month for my family and can't wait to go again! Well done all involved! Went 9 miles from our home to The H & J for light bite at lunchtime. Have been before and never been disappointed. We had a great welcome and were told that if there was anything that wasn't shown on the menu which we wanted, then they would supply it. This happened and we were blessed with a really fabulous, tasty, hot meal. The food and ale are brilliant together with the warm friendly service. (Dogs and boots welcome, by the way!!). We will certainly visit again - have booked for a family lunch later this month. Well done!

Charming waitress who showed us to a table, we sat down and I ordered turkey with all the trimmings, my wife had Italian meats that she said was good, but they did not have to cook that, just cut up the meat! The veg was nearly raw and I like under cooked vegetables. The turkey was just like eating rubber.
Then I had reason to use the toilet, to late I realised that there was no toilet paper, also behind the toilet door there was three old used empty fresh air dispensers and the place looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks, complained and the charming waitress gave us a couple of glasses of wine on the house, she saved the day as I would not have paid for the meal, but for her charming disposition,
They are very lucky to have her!
No wonder we were the only people in the place.

Second visit on route to NorthWales on business trip
Did not stop by this time as the pub still does not cater for the travelling businessman, no WiFi
