“Slightly unusual but super restaurant”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Not your usual type of pub restaurant being more like an old schoolroom. The food was excellent especially the devilled kidneys starter and the liver main course. The owner keeps a huge and eclectic collection of gins of which he is justifiably proud. The service was excellent.
The main drawback is the inability to book which prevents me giving it the maximum score.
Not the cheapest eating experience but very good value for money.

“Chic, welcoming, good quality food and relaxing atmosphere”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Entering the Cholmondley Arms is like entering a slightly parallel universe where recessions, stress, road rage and unreasonable bosses don't exist, its a truly relaxing, comforting and welcoming environment. There is an immediate welcome at the bar and some excellent beers to taste (alongside a clearly well developed penchant for consuming various types of Gin). Not being able to book is a bit of a bind but to be fair we arrived at 20:30 on a Saturday evening and were seated within about 30 minutes which didn't feel like too much of a chore - having said that if you're making the trip to Malpass with a group it would be nice to know your table would be available in a reasonable time. Rather interestingly the meal was defined by the sharing platter which had prawns, scotch egg (with black pudding), smoked salmon, sausages, a prawn terrine and fried whitebait. This was possibly the most interesting and inventive starters I've seen - it was a delight. The main courses were in the shade of the starter, not that they were not good - just that the starter was exceptional. What was remarkable was the Steak and Kidney pie; not wishing to be difficult but just plonking a pastry top on a ceramic bowl is cheating - no such cheating at the Cholmondley Arms - a full pie totally encrusted (yes all the way around) with luscious flaky pastry - an absolute winner! Sadly we only managed to share a pudding but it was delicious. So in summary its a little bit off the beaten track but make the effort (even in the winter) - its totally worth it to unwind and enjoy the excellent experience that is the Cholmondley Arms.

“Great as usual”
Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

Visit here at least once a month, and the food is consistently great, simple with a bit of a twist, fresh, and always piping hot and not overpriced. Staff obviously have customer service at the heart of everything they do, and are welcoming, consistent and friendly without being overpowering.
The only minor criticism is that there are wonderful cobwebs from the very high ceilings, so must be hard to get down! But all adds to the charm I guess.
We really like this place and will continue to go.

We lived in Nantwich last year and this became a regular haunt for us, the food is good and consistent, interesting, great warm and friendly atmosphere, bistro like, with hustle and bustle but very warm and inviting. Moved to france but make a point when visiting family to take a drive to Nantwich and visit we just adore the Steak and kidney pie it cant be faulted...
