A good hotel option in Chantaburi

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 23, 2012
We arrived at the Maneechan Hotel at 8pm and upon checking in, decided to enjoy some light dinner by the pool. We found the staff to be very accommodating since they usually stop serving at that particular part of the hotel at that time of the day. They willingly adjusted and we dined on local seafood and iced cold beverages, while listening to contemporary jazz music. The room was spacious but sparse with dated décor. This is a very old hotel and could use some fresh paint and decorations to make it more appealing. Breakfast is included with the room and it the variety of choices was far greater than expected. There was an espresso coffee machine on hand that was operated by a member of the staff who served guests at the coffee counter. The same staff who served us the evening before was on duty for breakfast. They seemed to want to go out of their way to be very helpful. Check-out was a breeze and the front desk team were very friendly. While there are few options that rival this hotel in Chantaburi, it was priced appropriately and in a good location if you were transiting and on your way to Koh Chang. This may have been an excellent property in 2008 but it could use a face lift after 5 years. Suffice it to say, it is quiet, clean, comfortable, and we would stay again if the opportunity presented itself.

Having spent two nights, 2nd & 3rd March, in this hotel the following are the
observations I would like to make. As you will see they are not very good
ones: -

Having been shown to my room, and been given two little pods for the coffee
machine (what on earth was all that about?) I was then called by reception
to say I had been given the wrong room and if I wanted to stay in it, it
would cost me 2000BHT more. I asked to see the room they say I should have been
given and it was awful, so I opted to stay in the allocated room. This was
their error, not mine, and I feel very strongly that I should not have been
charged this extra amount. I e-mailed the hotel about this but I've not had the courtesy of a reply so far...

I asked if I could have some breakfast in the dinning room, the morning I arrived (they were still serving at the time), and I was told that my breakfast, included in the room
rate, would only start from the following morning. I said I understood that
and was willing to pay for that morning's breakfast - blank looks all round
so no breakfast!

The staff on reception have very poor English and whilst I agree we English
speakers should not automatically expect people of other nations to be
absolutely fluent (I could not have learned enough Thai in TWO days!) I do
feel that when they are dealing with the general public hotel staff,
especially, should not only be able to speak reasonable English but their
comprehension should be good too.

This hotel must have gem buyers from all over the world staying here as it
is the nearest to the centre of Chanthaburi (BUT far from being 'in the
heart of Chanthaburi' as it is described it is a good 7-10 minute drive out
of the centre) so it is very important that the staff have good
comprehension. For instance - I called them, on my UK mobile, to ask for
the shuttle bus to pick me up at the post office in Chanthaburi centre, this
being the place the shuttle bus had taken me to on the journey into
Chanthaburi, - they sent it to the bus station. I waited for more than
three quarters of an hour in the blistering heat and only after calling them
again did the vehicle finally arrive. Not one word of apology...

Although I have marked the cleanliness and comfort of the room (308), on
Booking.com's feedback form, quite high I have to say that the smell in the
shower room was awful - like over cooked noodles and burnt soy sauce!

I also did not appreciate being woken at 12.30am by a knock on my door and a
very pretty Thai girl standing there asking if I wanted 'service'! Her face
dropped when she saw it was a female occupying the room...

I spent two nights at this hotel and that was two nights too much...

Room tip: Be warned - if you book a deluxe room you may be shown to a room for which you may be charged and extra 2000BHT!

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, 2 rooms. The first rooms we were given had twin beds, and we had requested King size beds.
They switched our rooms, to ones that were very close to the highway on the back side. The amount of dust that comes from this is something I have never seen before. My lap top needed to be dusted each and every time I used it.
Over all the staff is fairly nice. The porters are helpful. The free shuttle that takes you to town, is very helpful.
Since I was on business, I did not have the opportunity to use the pool, but it did look quite nice.
The food, it was acceptable, nothing great, nothing bad.
I would probably stay here again, but would ask for a room away from the highway in the back.

Room tip: Try to get a room away from the highway in back

We stayed in Maneechan Resort while visiting a friend in Chanthaburi. The hotel staff were very friendly and the ones at the front desk spoke good English. The grounds are beautiful, and the restaurant and beer garden have a nice menu selection and pleasant atmosphere. The hotel also provided many free services including use of their sauna, wifi in our room, and a free shuttle that would drop us off and pick us up anywhere in town, 24 hours. A great stay - would recommend to anyone traveling to Chanthaburi!

We spent two nights at Maneechan Resort just outside the centre of Chanthaburi town. The location is fine as long as you have a car and the resort could generally use a renovation, but we were told this is being planned. We stayed in one of the 4 recently renovated rooms - 3,800 Baht per night - which was very comfortable, large, clean and excellent value. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and the facilities - pool and gym - very good. Breakfast was acceptable, but we were surprised at the excellent coffee at the resort and the delicious Chinese food in the coffee shop. Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay and I would recommend this resort as very good value.

Room tip: Ask for one of the 4 renovated rooms.

My second stay at Maneechan and I can't wait for the next. Considering the limited options for quality accomodation in Chanthaburi the Maneechan Resort really is a blessing....especially as Chanthaburi is my wife's home town so I've no choice but to visit periodically!

We spent 6 weeks in the Maneechan Resort at the start of our annual Thai tour and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The monthly rate is a bargain, the rooms spacious and exceptionally clean and the staff are fantastic without exception. The facilities are excellent with one of the best restaurants in town on-site, an excellent pool, good gym, sauna, jacuzzi etc. Also, a rarity in rural Thailand, the hotel wifi signal is strong and the connection relatively quick.

The only slight drawback during our stay was having to move rooms due to a major refurbishment project that started 2 weeks before we left (Chanthaburi's best is getting even better by the looks of things! The work is scheduled to complete by mid November). Unfortunately this meant we had to move to a room at the rear of the resort and swapped our garden view for a view of the dual carriageway that borders the back of the resort. This road is very busy being the main conduit between BKK and Trat so the road noise from HGVs rumbling past through the night did become a bit of a problem.

Room tip: Request a room nearer reception as the furthest rooms are a little close to the dual carriageway and if you're a light sleeper the noise can be a problem.
