“Ignore the bad reviews, you need to go there!! :)”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

Well where do I start? We have just got back and staying at the Kontiki apartments were a dream and I DEFINITELY will be going back there and strongly recommend you do the same! From start to finish the holiday was amazing and we loved staying in the apartments and Puerto Del Carmen as a whole.

We were a 26/31 year old couple who normally go all inclusive. For flights and the accommodation we paid £200 altogether booked via onthebeach. We got an absolute bargain because the Kontiki was everything we wanted and more. The reception staff were friendly, yes we didn't get the best room/balcony but who cares??! and again the rooms were a bit dated but again who cares??! They were lovely, clean and spacious and all we needed. The complex itself was brilliant! Perfect location!!! Gorgeous views from the poolside and sun terrace overlooking the beach. Everything was so clean and just perfect :)

The bar staff were FANTASTIC! They really really contributed to the enjoyment of our holiday so much. Rachel could not have been more friendlier and helpful, anything you need to know she knows and will go out of her way to help you. Tracy, one of the owners of the bar was also great to us and made lovely sangria, which is what we drank by the pool all holiday and I would strongly recommend it trying it. Meesha was lovely and always put a smile on my face as well as Jude who was such a laugh! I will genuinely miss them until the next time I go back again.

The food and drinks were really cheap, the selection on the menu was more than I ever expected from self catering...if you wanted you could pre book your breakfasts the night before, you can choose your table and it is all laid out nicely for you the next morning. You don't even have to tell them what time you will be eating (just as long as it's between 8:30 and 10:30) Breakfast was tasty, especially the continental brekkie of meats and cheese.

The apartments themselves are on a hill, known on here as 'cardiac hill'. I really do not understand all the fuss!!! It's not bad at all plus there is a side entrance to the Kontiki to save having to go all the way up it. This is by far the best holiday I have ever had and CANNOT WAIT to go back to the kontiki apartments.....beautiful and brilliant while being right on the beach, next to all shops, bars and restaurants, amazing bar staff....please please please go! You will not be dissapointed!

As for Puerto Del Carmen itself, it was great! I would definitely recommend going to an Italian restaurant called 'Las Terrazaz' and 'Thats Amore'. Also there are so many great pubs/ bars including 'Routa 66'. There is a great excursion shop called 'Last Minute Travel' for all your trip needs which is a short walk to the right at the bottom of the hill. We went on sand buggies through the mountains of Lanzarote and booked a jet bike safari which was totally amazing!!! Have a go on the peadelo boats too....there is so much to do I wish I had gone for 10 days now instead of a week. Also go on the catalazan boat trip! Lovely Tracy from the bar booked it all for us, 64 euros each got us a plantinum trip, free booze and food on board and the most hillarious northerner called Steve running the boat, it was brilliant!

I hope you have found this review helpful....I will be putting loads of pictures up soon but do not hesitate going to the Kontiki...you will have a fantastic time! Ignore all the bad reviews and the moaners...the holiday is also what you make it :)

Claire :)

I have to say that after reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor I was a tad worried about staying here. But after 2 fantastic weeks I wonder what on earth I had to worry about.

Prior to arriving at the apartments I contacted the management direct asking for a room with little or no steps due to my wife’s disability, how delighted we were that not only did they accommodate this they gave us an apartment which stepped out onto the poolside.

Having been to Lanzarote on several occasions (never to the kontiki) I knew what to expect with apartments, I see that some people complained that there was no kettle or toaster, however this is common its only in recent years that this has begun to change. Ive owned a travel kettle for some years but have used the stove to boil water too. You can hire these if you need too either with reception direct or save the odd euro by finding a hire shop.

The apartment itself was lovely, It had single beds rather than a double but that is typical for holiday apartments we just push the beds together! The apartment was cleaned every other day and towels changed if required by leaving them in the bath on cleaning day. The kitchen was a typical holiday apartment with a couple of cooking rings, microwave and fridge/freezer. There was more than enough plates, cutlery, pans etc for those wishing to do some self catering. It was spacious with the kitchenette being attached to a large lounge space with 2 sofas that I believe can pull into a sofa bed. The lounge had a TV with one English channel (the Disney channel) but I don’t go on holiday to watch TV. The only downside to the apartment was the bathroom was looking a bit tired and could do with being replaced, the water flow was fine and the temperature settings worked, but the suite was very worn out. I do believe however these are on an upcoming replacement program. The apartment also uniquely had entrance doors one down a corridor at the back (officially the front door!) and another going onto the pool. While we visiting there was some roadworks on one of the roads this caused a bit of noise at times although it wasnt too bad and you cant blame the apartmennt for work occuring on a public road.

The Kontiki itself had very helpful reception staff and the desk was manned 24/7 any problems you had were resolved quickly. You can also book trips in reception and there are 2 internet pc’s that cost 50cents per 5 minutes.

The bar was lovely this had an area going onto the poolside and also a back room that was nice and cool if you wanted to avoid the heat and watch a bit of TV of have a bit of quiet. The bar staff were all lovely especially Rachel who arranged me to have some sparkling wine with breakfast on my birthday while I was out there. She was always very friendly and a credit to the staff and stood out above the rest, in her caring friendly manner. However all the other staff members were also very nice. The bar drinks were pretty much the same prices as the main bars and restaurants as were the main meals. Breakfasts and snacks were a little more expensive but still quite reasonable priced.

Being built on the side of a steep hill the Kontiki is built on 3 levels, the top level has the swimming pool, bar and reception and also has a additional sun terrace away from the pool which overlooks the sea. The middle area is down 30ish steps and has more apartments, and the bottom level is down another approx. 30 steps and has more apartments. The bottom level however has an additional sun terrace seafront side with a pool table and table tennis table, so you don’t have to go up to the poolside to sunbathe if you don’t want to. I agree it can be a pain having lots of steps or a hill climb however this cant be really avoided on a hill side apartment block. With lanzarote being very hilly this is very common in many apartment complexes. The advantage of being on a lower level is you have less of a hill climb to the main sea front!

The pool itself is of an adequate size and has the shallow bit fenced off from the deeper bit to stop children getting out their depth, The pool is lovely to cool, down and is very clean although some repairs will be needed in the future to the pool floor. The pool is lifeguarded and is cleaned out daily using a pool vac, the poolside is patrolled regularly throughout the day and any rubbish cleaned away. The poolside is cleaned thoroughly every evening without fail.
As already stated a lot of Lanzarote is very hilly this is due to its formation from volcanic eruptions. Before you visit be aware of this.

For 1st timers a visit to the volcano (Timanfaya national park) is a must either on a coach trip or by private car. You wont believe your eyes until you see it. On a visit here it may be worth taking in a camel ride and a visit to the green lagoon too. As these are near by. Also if you have time or plan a future visit the following 3 are worth seeing too Jameos del Agua, The César Manrique Foundation, The Green Caves - (Cuevas de los Verdes).

Puerto Del Carmen is busy but not too busy and is generally a place that families and couples visit rather than large lively groups. There is a mixture of restaurants, bars, shops and the odd night club along the sea front and over the road you have miles of lovely sandy beaches. A bit of a walk away you can find the old town and harbour, which is a lot more old fashioned and have many restaurants serving fresh fish caught in the local waters and served the same day.

As a person who loves Lanzarote , I would always visit the island again, however would I visit the Kontiki again? the answer is 100% yes I do not understand where these bad reviews come from, we saw none of these issues. My wife who was a Lanzarote virgin is already saying “when we come back”

A Wonderful Holiday!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: some rooms have a lot of steps for those less mobile please stress this in advance.

Our apartment was only about 10meters from the beach in Puerto Del Carmen which was fantastic, we had one bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room, which was a bit of a pain to make up each night but as expected when we booked. The towels and sheets were changed every 2-3 days which was great, they also cleaned the bathroom and swept the floors. We had a terrace with table and chairs, which opened out into a large terrace area with a pool table, again this was great. The pool was up a set of stairs which for us was good as it was not in your face all the time (a lot of the apartments overlooked the pool which would have been a bit much - nice to have peaceful terrace instead) The whole complex was kept nice and clean.

Reception were very friendly and spoke great English, and they sold a large range of food and drinks - including pizza to take away!

We had a 2 hob stove, microwave and large fridge freezer, which was sufficient but would have been great to have an oven too (its surprisingly hard to think of different foods to make on just a hob and microwave for 2 weeks!). Hair dryer was provided in the bathroom with the huge sink and shower (nice touch!)

There are plenty of small local shops to get your groceries, however if you have a car then its best to go to the Spar which has a better range and is cheaper. (we found it was cheaper to hire a car once you are there from the town rather than the airport)

Perfect location for us, huge beach which was kept very clean and various activities - pedalows (we had one with a slide!) scubadiving etc. Lots and lots of cafes/bars on the front and restaurants.

All in all a fantastic holiday and we would go back again.

Room Tip: rooms range from closest to the beach to right up the hill/steps close to the pool but further from...

me and my partner stayed here for 10 nights in may. staff were all pleasant, especially bar staff, always friendly and talkative. rooms were cleaned every other day. only problem we had was with mosquitos! rooms boiling hot at night but couldnt have windows open because we got bit to peices, had to stock up on insect killer and mosquito repellent spray. hotel is close to everything, 10 minutes walk to harbour and old town and literally 2 minutes to beach just at the bottom of the hill, which isnt as bad as some people make out. pool was also lovely and cleaned everyday, roof top sun terrace looks over the beach and was our favourite spot for sunbathing. overall its great value for money and would definitely stay again if were to return to puerto del carmen.

Room Tip: ask for sea view or pool view!
