We were at Ole olivina hotel on the last week of May 2014. Very nice hotel, well placed ( 5 to 10 minutes by walk from shops, beach & restaurants - clubs). The local team is absolutely fantastic ! Suggest to hire a car (very cheap - 100 € / week) and to travel along Lanzarote from North to South.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms along swimming pool "Zen" for quiet locations.

Booked this hotel in December 2013 and told in March that hotel no longer a Riu. Having read some of the comments about the French there, was some trepidation on arrival.

We had no issues with the French, there must have been at least 80% there last week. Club Marmara was "in charge" so any entertainment was completely in French. Food was of a good standard, somewhat repetitive but ok. As all inclusive better than what I expected.

Would I stay at this hotel again - yes. Don't need the entertainment and not keen on the Rui Club prefer quieter hotels.

One downside, found the bed to be very hard and woke most mornings with cricked neck or back ache. Most unusual.

Went to this hotel last year had a good time,
We went all inclusive, great selection of food always something to eat and I am very fussy.
Great staff all very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is in a great location only a 10 min walk into main resort.
Only down side a very small indoor seating area, we went mid May and it was too cold to sit out side at night and it was hard to find a seat.

Room Tip: Best rooms are upstairs with pool view

We visited the Olivina in November last year (when it was still Riu Olivina). The French Team were in then so in a way we knew what to expect as far as entertainment was concerned. We returned on May 8th for one week, as we thought the food was a good standard for all inclusive and ALL of the staff were very good.(most of the staff remembered us).
We flew from Birmingham with Thomson......What an absolute mess up at the check in!! took us over an hour to check in good job we were only second in the queue!! Thomson now do their own check in and it has moved to the far end of the other terminal.

We were not informed by Thomson that the hotel had now become Ole (part of Iberostar we believe) which did annoy us, as we feel we should have been informed of the change of ownership.

As for the entertainment.....We were told by one of the team, after the Flamenco dancing the rest of the entertainment would be in French, as they were French, and they were employed by a French company (and there would be no translation into any other language). We joined another two couples (near the back of the room) and carried on chatting over a glass of wine.
One of the entertainment team came over to us and said......STOP TALKING OR LEAVE THE ROOM as he had complaints from some of the French Guests. We were not rowdy in any way, and not as ignorant as many of them were.( By the way we were all pensioners.)

As I have said Good food Excellent staff especially Raquel, Arragon, and our friend Claudia!(Inma)
but the entertainment team must learn a few manners whilst there are other nationalities visiting!

Room Tip: November we stayed in the hotel, this time in the apartment. We preferred the apartment as there is...

Hello and welcome to my review of Ole Olivina Lanzarote, the finest hotel in all of France..oh, wait....

I feel it is best summed up in the words of one of the Ole (formerly Riu) staff members who I was chatting with during my stay:

"before, English and German; now, French - I hate the French!"

This view is shared by a number of the staff there from what we could gather.

Chatting to the Thomson Holidays rep on site, he said he had been inundated with complaints, and also went on to admit that the predicament is Thomson's fault - Riu wanted more money, Thomson threatened to lessen the number of clients they sent and Riu said, ok then and went to the French - classic bluff calling and epic failure on behalf of Thomson.

So to the actual place then, and I guess what you end up thinking of this accommodation depends entirely on what you want and expect from your package holiday and your all inclusive experience.

Having visited it at the same time last year when it was a Riu property, I can compare the two experiences - and it's fair to say there are plenty of similarities.

The majority of the home-based (ie. Ole) staff are the same, and they give the same level of service with a smile - nothing is too much trouble for them, they seem genuinely pleased to see you - moreso when they realise you are English!

The place itself is spotless, set in beautiful gardens and with 3 pools which are always clean, have plenty of sunbeds and in 2 cases, have a bar close by for your soft drinks, hot drinks, alcoholic staples and cocktails - one pool area (closest to the majority of the apartments) has been ruined however, and more on that later.

The food is of a good standard, not exceptional and quite repetitive although you shouldn't go hungry.

Now, entertainment, here we go..!

As mentioned, Thomson had their bluff called by Riu, and as a result the hotel is now 75% French (figure from Thomson rep). As a result of this, Club Marmara, who as I could gather is the tour operator now responsible for filling the hotel, is tasked with providing the entertainment which is fabulous if you are a member of their party and you speak French - for if you are not, you will not be included in any of it.

The daytime activities are bellowed out of a microphone at the apartment poolside, in French by a selection of idiots who don't realise that they have a microphone in their hand, is interspersed with French music played to an extraordinary level of volume and is entirely for their crowd. When they first walk past you to say "Bonjour" and try and get you involved, when discovering that you are a) English and b) not part of their 'group', it is the very last time they will speak to you or acknowledge you for the rest of your stay - you will be completely excluded from all activities so if this forms part of what makes your holiday, look elsewhere.

It carries on in the evening, when the chief idiot stands up on the stage, prances around pulling faces for a while and then announces everything in French whilst the other members of the animation team dance around and encourage the French to get up and join in with dances they must be familiar with as they seemed to accompany the French music.

The crowd will take all the seats they can lay their hands on, from the main bar area and the secondary smoking area, and will line them up theatre-style in front of the stage - they will get very noisy and very rowdy like a football crowd - you will also find those who have not been able to commandeer a seat propping up the bar, so good luck in getting through them to ask for a drink!

On 2 nights only was the bar area even bareable, on Saturday, apparent French switchover day, where it was pretty empty and they had a guy singing songs in Spanish (the joy, Spanish in Spain!) and on the Wednesday night, they had a 45 minute Flamenco show which, although introduced in French, was at least successful in keeping the crowd noise down whilst entertaining (they were dancing in Spanish, I believe!).

So to summarise:

Hotel and apartment areas - good, clean, well maintained, comfortable
Food - good, if repetitive
Ole Staff - exceptional

Club Marmara/Entertainment - completely for the French, and actively excluding all those of a different nationality.

Have I returned to this accomodation? Yes

Would I return again? I have a newly found loathing of the French and their arrogance so definately not, until the issues of the domineering Marmara have been resolved.

Stayed at this hotel last week. Booked a RIU as had been recommended by friends. Received a letter shortly before departure stating hotel had changed ownership to Iberostar (Ole being part of this group) and that there would be no noticeable changes. While there we were told by other guests of noticeable changes, ie payment for safe and deposit for pool towels, standard of food and drink. We had requested two rooms next door to each other as 4 friends travelling together, but told on arrival that this was not possible so were placed three rooms apart. Also booked pool view rooms but could not see the pool from the rooms. Food plentiful but did get a bit samey after a few days, no themed nights as stated. Cocktails definitely watered down greatly. Entertainment team were French and therefore all entertainment in French, any other nationality were made to feel excluded. As soon as the team knew we were English we were ignored and made to feel quite uncomfortable. On the plus side the Spanish staff were delightful and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean although a little shabby. Pools were great, although a bit cold. Sunbeds comfortable. Not sure that this hotel will be in the Thomson brochure next year!

We stayed in a one bed department, very spacious with private balcony, in the stunning grounds. The pools were lovely too although they were extremely cold! The food and staff were lovely and we genuinely struggled to find fault. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room would have been good, however, it is a very small quibble.
It is the best holiday we have ever had, my mum, myself and my 21 year old daughter all went and thoroughly enjoyed it...something for every age.
It is a good 20 mins walk to the shops and the beach however the scenery is very picture postcard. A café we went in had a swimming pool in the middle of it and overlooked the sea.
