“Nice hotel. Been to better Riu's though.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

We found this hotel very nice. We had a lovely room in the Hotel, cleaned everyday to perfection, out cleaning lady left flowers in our room and made great animals from the bathroom towels.
We found the food was great and having the wine on tap was a bonus.
Found all the staff were excellent, reception, bar staff, and restaurant staff.
My only complaint was you felt you needed to glue your plates to the table because they were taken away even before you finished. One morning we went to get some breakfast and when we came back to the table they had cleared everything off the table including our coffee pot and cups and saucers.
The entertainment was dire, allthough we have stayed in four Riu hotels before and have found them all to be the same. I don't know how they have the cheek to stand on stage, when they are blatently singing along to the original records. To be honest we didn't stay around the hotel in the evening, we used to walk into the town.
Couldn't really say the continguency of the French bothered us, only found them rowdy around the pool area once.
I don't know if I would visit this hotel again, but I certainly wouldn't be put off solely because of the Marmara group.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the Hotel, it seems to be a lot quieter and if you travel in the Summer I would say...

Having travelled extensively with Thomson holidays for many years, and also enjoyed the RIU hotels, my husband and I booked an ‘all inclusive’ holiday to the RIU Olivina in Lanzarote with confidence. However, it is with regret that I feel compelled to write this letter to inform you of the intolerable situation that has occurred at the RIU Olivina.
As soon as we arrived at the RIU Olivina, it became apparent that something was not quite right, as there were poignant signs dotted around the complex in every public area with the words ‘Club Marmara’ and a logo.
After dinner we strolled along to the ‘all inclusive’ bar and entertainment area, only to find that the whole show (which was far below the RIU standards by any means), was in French. The bar area was split into two halves with all French speaking people at the front half, and all other nationalities at the back half. Alarm bells began to ring as the entire evening was in French and everyone else was excluded completely.
The following morning, the ‘Marmara’ animation team made all their announcements in French and French only, and this included every activity throughout the holiday. A couple of days into the holiday, I asked a member of the ‘Marmara’ team why everything was in French, and he replied that he was employed by ‘Marmara’, and only for the people who had booked with ‘Marmara’, nobody else. The ‘Marmara’ team were entirely responsible for all the entertainment in the Olivina, and had total control of all the music etc. everywhere in the complex. Some nights outside entertainment was provided, but this was always overshadowed by the ‘Marmara’ team shouting, behaving inappropriately, and dancing their own ‘made-up’ dances with the French people only – they even had seats stacked up behind the stage curtain for their own clients when they arrived in the bar area.
Following a couple of incidents, myself and another person who had booked a RIU Holiday with Thomson went along to reception to enquire about the situation. We were informed that ‘Marmara’ had taken over 70% of the Olivina allocation on a five year contract, and without this situation, the Hotel would have closed. My husband and I also filled in a ‘Customer Service Form’ with the Thomson Holiday Advisor , who was also at a loss with the situation, and he could not have been more helpful.
We have absolutely no qualms with the RIU Olivina Hotel itself – the Hotel is clean, the food is of RIU standard and the staff are all lovely, but this situation with ‘Marmara’ is not acceptable, and resembles an ‘18-30’ holiday. I have since checked out the ‘Club Marmara’ website, and the clues are there for all to see, but they are not present on the Thomson website. We were not informed that ‘Marmara’ had taken control of the RIU Olivina prior to the commencement of our holiday, and would not have booked to go there if we had been informed.

We have just returned from a 14 day holiday to This ( RIU).
Firstly let me say we were in the Apartments, yes as other people have said they are Basic and need an update, but they are Clean and offer all the necessities you require.
They are perfectly acceptable for a Winter Holiday , but i would not like to be there in the Summer Months, as there is no Air Con, and Sleeping was only just bearable with the Fan in the Bedroom, (Daytime Temp was between 20-24) nighttime between, 15-18. so a Hotel room would probably be more suitable for Summer Months as these do have Air Con.

Pool Towels changes once a week on a Wednesday.
Wifi Chargeable, in this day and age i found very unsatisfactory.
All Staff very Polite and work extremely hard, any requests we had for extra's for the apartment were dealt with very quickly, you just need to ASK..
The Food we have to say was some of the Best we have had on an All Inclusive Holiday. OK the Vegatarian section was very limited, but this was the only down side to the food that we came across, , that said everything was Fresh, replenished often and well presented, you would have to be extremely fussy indeed not to be able to find something to eat, the only other annoying thing for me personally, was the staff were far to quick clearing plates from table, , on numerous occasions you felt like you did not dare to put your cutlery down, before the plate was whisked away, a very minor details, but one which i found very tiresome.

Now to get to the point that the last few reviews have mentioned.
About 6 weeks ago, Club Marmara took over the entertainment?Animation. The hotel clientele is now mainly 70% French, we were told by the staff on reception that the hotel was failing, and Club Marmara have now 70% allocation of the complex. unfortunately we were not made aware of this before our departure, this we are taking up with Tompsons, we booked this Hotel expecting a RIU complex, If i wanted a French holiday i would have gone to France, if you have been to other riu Hotels in the past you need to get this rectified before your holiday date, we did fill in a complaint form during our Holiday, as did many others.
The average age group during our time at the Olivina was 50-60+, Club Marmara was run by a group of youngsters in there very early 20's and all done in French, until there was a mass of complaints from all other nationalities , .
Entertainment in the Evening is fine if the outside entertainment is brought in, but if it is run by Club Marmara, you are in for a shock..
The Entertainment room is nowhere near Big enough to cater for all guests
Pool area very noisy, i witnessed a Club Marmara rep be very rude to another guest,

This Riu has the making of a very good complex, unfortunately being spoiled by Club Marmara having 70% allocation,
This would have been a 5 Rating for me, but unfortunately we felt very let down by RIU and BY TOMPSON, i feel we were Miss Sold our Holiday and will continue to get it resolved.

Room Tip: Apartments ok for Winter, No AirCon, would suggest a hotel room for summer months.

Me and my wife had a lovely week in early Dec at the Riu Olivina this is our 2nd visit.
What was notable this time was the French influence on the entertainment it seemed to be very overpowering at times especially the evening entertainment because we were totally lost as to what was going on.
Apart from that we had a smashing week The apartment by the lower pool was ok with the sun on the balcony most of the day plenty of room and comfortable beds.
Always kept clean but tv channels very poor but when on holiday not too worried about television
The sunbeds at the lower pool would have been more comfortable with mattresses.
The staff, food, drinks and location all excellent and would recommend this hotel especially if you like the French

I feel a bit mean only giving 3 stars, this hotel is good and value for money. I would return, but better organised.

Reason for lower rating

Vegetarian options poor. There's meat in with salads, which is annoying
Very little protein offered such as beans and lentils
Lentil soup had huge piece of meat in it
No soy milk, usually hotels supply this now
Very uncomfortable sun beds
All French entertainment
Tv poor, only sky news in English

Good points

You can ask for kettle in room and take as much tea etc as needed. Handy when you forget it as I did
Food is good for meat eaters
Lovely pool area
Nice drink selection
Good rooms, a little dated perhaps
Lovely staff, genuinely warm and friendly
Very clean
Excellent location

For a cheap, all inclusive break this place is fine. Learn some French and all will be well. If veggie then take some soy milk and protein bars. I felt quite hungry just eating vegetables. There's a spar just round the corner so you can buy soy milk but not soy meat, the latter would've been helpful for me.

Best bit. The cats. They havebeautiful, well looked after cats there. I really loved fussing them. Nice to see them looking loved. Don't worry if you don't like cats as they are shy at first and will keep their distance

Room Tip: I was on ground floor and had a small apartment. This was a great choice and loved being near the g...

well just returned from this hotel , we are a couple who are in our sixties and went with our friends who are the same age and can say I have mixed emotions ,the staff are great nothing is to much trouble, very pleasant and chatty ,I asked for extra pillows and was given them straight away ,which I have found a problem in other hotels ,we had pool towels and room towels shampoo and shower gel and soap and an hairdryer provided ,the food was great something for everyone always fresh and replenished continually plenty to choose from each day people cleaning all day long ,its not far from the beach ,shops and pubs which is a nice walk ,we played mini golf everyday just up the road for 3 euros the hotel is quite basic for a chilled holiday
Now the problem we had was we like to join in games French boules ,darts etc and found the hotel animation team were French and did everything in French so we couldn't understand any of the games etc they were doing
now has this is a Spanish resort so you would expect them to at least be able to speak Spanish ,but no !! this was entirely aimed at the 80% and maybe more of French guests at the resort hotel ,(not that there was anything wrong with them )so we were left out of the day and night entertainment there ,it was quite nice when a Spanish lady guitarist came in and did both Spanish and English songs ,it let down the hotel really, the animation team made no attempt to include the other guests at all there shows were done entirely in French
while we liked the hotel we won't be returning because of this

Room Tip: we had a room in the hotel which has air/con , the apartments can be a bit of a trek every day they...

Would have given this hotel a higher rating if it hadn't been taken over by the French entertainment. My room in the main Hotel was lovely with a view over the pool area 1227 staff lovely. Especially the bar staff . Club Maria would not speak any language except French they were rude and common. It was like being in a room full of badly behaved children. If you can change your Hotel before you go I recommend that you do.
