We stayed in Club Valena for one week in November looking for some winter sunshine. Club Valena is a two-storey, small development of apartments many of which seem to be owner occupied. It is in a quiet end of the resort with Matagorda shopping centre (bars and restaurants) and the beach both ten minutes walk away. We used the bus to get into Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife - the bus stop was around 10 minutes walk away. A taxi home at night from the far end of Puerto del Carmen cost around 7 euros.
Our one bedroom apartment was spacious, modern (most furnishings and fittings were from ikea) and kept very clean. I saw various pictures of apartments in this complex on different websites and our apartment was basic compared to some of the shots - bare walls, no rugs, only basic kitchen appliances. This may be because some apartments are rented out by owners whose apartments are better furnished? Having said that, the furnishings were of a better standard than many other similarly priced holiday apartments I've stayed in so I wasn't too disappointed. There was also a flatscreen television with a number of UK and Irish tv stations (no local stations or other languages).
The apartment also had a large private sun terrace, which was south facing and wasn't overlooked. The complex seems to have been built so all balconies and the pool face south so it's a real sun trap.
Overall the complex was very well maintained - the pool and bar areas were very fresh and clean. It may be difficult to get a sunlounger in peak season, especially since many of them were broken when we were there! There were a few social events when we were there - a bbq and carvery - but we tended to head into town for entertainment. Many of the other guests seemed to be retirees and I think this place would be ideal for older couples looking for a quiet break.
It's worth hiring a car for a few days because there's lots of interesting places to visit on the island include the volcanic national park, various dramatic coastal features created by volcanos including caves and cliffs and El Golfo which has a beach with black sand and sparkly green gems. Towns outside of the resorts had really good value food, particularly the fishing village of Arrieta where we found fabulous fish restaurants.
