We don't very often do All Inclusive so I'm not quite sure what made me book this hotel!!! Having said that, we had a wonderful 8 days here, the staff really could not have been more friendly, welcoming and helpful and always with a smile, an absolute tonic and a credit to the Riu group. Checked in and we were invited to go for a drink whilst reception staff processed the paperwork, half an hour later, passports back in hand (better than having to leave them overnight at reception as we have had to do in many other establishments) we set off to find our room. Our cases were delivered to the room about 20 minutes after we arrived at the room. As previously mentioned on here the hotel is a combination of two original hotels, joined by a wooden walkway, we had been allocated a room in the "other" hotel, away from the main bar, restaurant and entertainment. Now this suited us just fine, we do like "quiet" when we're away, and the walk back and forth to breakfast and dinner was not a problem at all, however it could cause difficulties for anyone with mobilty problems.
The room was excellent, clean, a good size with plenty of storage and a very good bathroom, decent shower over the bath, but the step over the edge could possibly cause problems for some less able bodied people. We were on the ground floor overlooking the pool area, large terrace that had the sun on it for most of the day, perfect. Once there my husband discovered two things, firstly he needed another pillow, and secondly whoever had been in the room prior to us had locked the safe (it is an electronic lock in this part of the hotel, but I believe some rooms have a key system) and we couldn't put away our valuables. A quick call to reception and the pillow was delivered within 5 minutes, service with a smile again. It took a little longer for maintainence to arrive, who then had to go and get the master key from the director, before returning to give the safe a good hammering and eventually get it open, sorted, valuables locked up and off for a quick walk to get our bearings. Incidentally the safes are complimentary, nice to see when so many hotels, even 4 + 5 * , want to charge you.
Main restaurants are in the other part of the complex, but there is a pool bar that serves lunchtime snacks over where we were staying. We didn't bother walking over at lunchtimes as we were either out and about using local bars/restaurants or away for two nights (we took the ferry and spent two nights whilst we were there in Fuerteventura, nice to have a bit of a change, variety is of course the spice of life).
Breakfast is served 08.00-10.30, and if you can't get up for then they serve a continental option on the terrace outside the restaurant from 10.30-11.30. Choice of food at breakfast was the best we've ever seen in and AI hotel, so much choice that it would take me all day to write it all on here, suffice to say, we were never stuck for anything to eat, and those pancakes were lovely.
Lunchtime snacks were more than adequate if you so required, soup, fresh pizzas, lovely salads, garlic bread, fresh fruit, cheese etc etc etc.
Dinner in the restaurant could be a little noisy, however the choices of food really were very good, if it said beef steak, that's exactly what it was, steak, tender, tasty and cooked fresh from the grill, huge choice of hot starters, salads, fresh vegetables, various types of potatoes and not just chips!!! The dessert table was stunning, I really had to make sure I didn't make a total pig of myself, good grief I could've come home 2 stone heavier, thank goodness also for the walk back to the room.
As I said the restaurant was a tad noisy for us, so 6 nights out of the 8 we were actually resident we chose to book for the Mexican and the Asian restaurants, which whilst being self serve, are a lot smaller and hence a lot quieter. The Mexican was very good, with good choice of food, but unfortunately not quite spicy enough for us!!! The Asian restaurant however was fantastic, choice of different rices, noodles, fried peppers and onions, chicken curry, sweet and sour pork and chicken, beef teryaki, spare ribs, spring rolls, wonton, and to top it all HOT chilli sauce, mmmmmmmm. I would give this restaurant 10/10 for atmosphere, food and service.
Bars are open from 10.30-12.00 each day, and there is allegedly a night club (much too old to be doing that sort of thing!!!) which serves drinks untill 02.00. We never saw the night club, and most importantly, we never heard it either. Beers, wines, soft drinks and tea/coffee etc are self serve in all the bars except the swim up bar, spirits and cocktails are served from the bar, consequently there is never a long wait for a drink.
Entertainment was mainly provided by the animation team, that is what we saw of it, we are not on holiday to be entertained and see little point in watching people miming to pre-recorded sound track. That of course is only our opinion, and the "theatre" appeared to full each night, each to their own and all that.
The hotel ground are very extensive, and beautifully maintained, two large pools, which are both spotless, and a childrens pool. There is a gym and a "Wellnes" spa also, neither of which we used so can't comment, however I can't really see the point of using a running machine whilst looking at a wall/mirror when the sun is shining and it's a lovely walk to either Puerto del Carmen in one direction or Matagorda in the opposite direction.
The weather whilst we were there was perfect, one cloudy day and we were away for that anyway. In mentioning we went away, we thought it only polite to inform reception of our intended "mini break", mainly to save the cleaners having to go into our room each day. On our departure we asked them to please "release us" from our AI bracelets (don't want to be walking about in that now, do you?) which was done, on our return we went to reception to get a new one and they even remembered which room we were in!! I can only praise the reception staff, in all areas they were absolutely fantastic, well done all of you, you really do an excellent job.
In summing up this hotel I have to say we were impressed with every aspect of our stay, we have not one gripe to make at all, and despite our not "doing" AI normally, we would most definitely recommend it for a relaxing break.

We spent a week in this hotel with my mum (60), my partner and i (late 20's) and my 2 yr old son.We arrived in the morning with about 7 other parties. We gave the reception staff our name and they suggested we go down to the poolside and have a drink while they booked us in. We went back and took our key and luggage to our rooms, without the hassle of waiting. we had booked 2 rooms which were both over at the other hotel, over the walkway. It was lovely and quiet at this side and our room overlooked the second pool. For people who have walking difficulties, i would recommend asking for a room at the reception side, and be aware, the wooden walkway is heavily varnished and when wet it's pretty dangerous! You can avoid the walkway and go around the bungalows and gardens which is what we did most of the time.

The rooms were a decent size and our balcony was huge and safe for our 2 year old. We had a standard room which came with satelite tv, hairdryer (bring your own, it was rubbish) an empty fridge and plenty of drawers and wardrobe space. The cleaners work really hard and the rooms and hotel was spotless. The only fault i can find in the room is the bath - it is quite high and there isn't a seperate shower so i can imagine elderly people having a few difficulties, was fine for us though.

The pools were excellent, cleaned every morning and the poolside is always clean and tidy. Can get fresh pool towels for free every day on the poolside from 9 - 12.30, just hand in the cards you get when you check in. 2 of the pools were heated during the winter, which were still quite 'fresh' shall we say but still quite acceptable.
The food was good, some days were better than others but all in all a very good standard for an all inclusive, the salads were amazing and the cooked meats just melt in your mouth. The dining area obviously could get a little busy but we never had to queue. We just went at times when it was a little quieter. There is food on all day, by the pool on both sides of the hotel (there seemed to be more choice at the reception side) and it was freshly cooked in front of you. The drinks were really good in comparison to other hotels, the beer and wines were really nice and the self service made it easy. The poolside bars had decent staff and you don't wait long at all (will be longer in summer i assume) and the cocktails are lovely and included. Champagne is on offer, i would recommend a few glasses of that! The staff are all very helpful and always speak to you.

There are more germans and french than english but it isn't a negative at this hotel, the staff all speak english. It may not be ther first language you hear but they get to us eventually! The kids club was good and although my son was too young to be left with them, the staff welcomed him and he was allowed to join in as long as i stayed.
I wasn't expecting much of the evening entertainment as it was january but i was surprised, as every night the staff did a show of some sort. It wasn't really our cup of tea but it was obvious how much effort they all put in. the only gripe i have about the entertainment is that the children's disco was really short, they say it lasts at least 45 minutes but it was less. I was surprised because there was about 15 children upto about 6yrs old and as you can imagine, they weren't interested in the shows.

Overall this hotel was lovely and we had a great time. It wasn't cheap, even in january but to be honest it is one of the better all inclusive hotels, so is worth it. There were no drunken idiots, lots of well behaved children and the other nationalities were very friendly.
The location was great - turn right outside of the gate and a 30 minute (slow walking) leads you to the start of puerto del carmen, turn left and it leads you to los picilos which is alot quieter but nice. Word of warning, there is an irish bar on this side and the carling lager is more like soda water with a hint of lager ha! didn't go back there! We would definitely return.
finally, we have 1 night of extrememly heavy rain which flooded some of the rooms on the reception side of the hotel ( we only knew this because my mum walked past the thomson rep who had a small queue of unhappy people). They complained because they went to reception and asked to be moved but by the sounds of it some were told to come back later, as the staff were busy! obviously they weren't happy but it was a rare occurance because it doesn't usually rain, especially not to that extent!

Travelled to the Riu Paraiso on recommendation of a Thomson agent for a week in the sun away from a terrible English winter. For all inclusive the hotel seemed a bit pricey but we did pay more for an upgrade from a superior room.

Firstly, the early part of the week was windy and cloudy; nothing the travel agent could do about that though! But the second half of our stay brightened up and in fact we were told we missed a flood the previous week so were probably lucky. Canary Isles virgins note: you won't always get perfect weather in January or February (having said that we almost tried Egypt so probably made the right choice...).

Secondly, we asked for a pool view and expected at least a kettle, if not a kitchen area, for our upgrade. Maybe our fault for not checking, but be aware there is no guarantee of frills if you pay the extra. That said, the 'bungalow' was much bigger than a standard room (we saw the inside of one which was set aside as a courtesy room on the last day) and we were lucky enough to have a verandah that faced the sun all day; also our neighbours were largely quiet, so it was a very peaceful stay overall.

The guests are mixed nationality, with Germans probably dominant, many Brits and a few French people. The main restaurant seems to cater largely for continental palates - especially at breakfast. We were so unimpressed with the early morning food that we more or less went off-site every day, so take some spending money with you for this. There was variety in the other meals and poolside snacks are always on hand, so the overall quality of the food was average to good. There are also two themed restaurants, one serving Mexican or Canarian food, the other Chinese. These are not of a brilliant standard but make for a nice change. The other thing about the main eaterie is that few tables are 'detached' from the others; so that if you want a bit of privacy from other people, it's hard to come by.

The main pool was heated which was pleasant in sometimes cool weather, the pool area in general is clean and not overcrowded at this time of year. There are two pools and the beach is over the road so there is always the option of a change of scenery. The hotel's location couldn't really be better: 10 minutes from the airport but without overbearing flight-path noise, and a short walk from the shops and restaurants of Los Poscillos or the strip of Puerta del Carmen.

Other people have commented on the lack of a smoke-free zone. As the hotel did not seem to be full we always found a place to sit without inhaling the haze but when it's busier, or if you did want to sit 'outside' in the bar area or watch the entertainment from the bar you probably would suffer as a non-smoker.

Apart from the generally relaxing atmosphere, probably the best thing about the Riu is its staff. They cannot do enough to help you and you are glad to tip them or thank them in return. I ordered flowers for my partner's birthday and these were delivered to our room at the time I requested, and with a free bottle of sparkling wine. Three different staff also wrote cards or notes to mark the occasion! I can't remember any member of staff passing us once without saying hello or smiling.

The entertainments team seemed to really love taking kids off parents' hands during the day then returning for the evening session to keep the mums and dads happy. They are very hard-working, friendly, and can often be seen during the day practising routines for the night time.

Overall, we had a lovely week - embellished by a coach trip round the island, ask your rep as this is a must - and if circumstances allowed and we did want to return to Lanzarote we would stay again; especially if the breakfast was improved!

Considering the change over days are Sundays & Thursdays we arrived on Sunday afternoon around 3pm with only one other couple so booking in was a breeze. The staff in reception were very helpful and after telling us that the porter would bring our luggage to our room very soon, they gave us our directions and off we went with our 2ltr bottles of water each (this is available free throughout your stay). I asked for mattress toppers which were put on our bed straight away. Now, at this point I have to point out that there used to be 2 separate hotels, one was the Palace and the other was the Rio I think. A few years ago they became one ie ClubHotel etc. To achieve is they were joined are together by a bridge. At first glance of the bridge you thing OMG!! but believe me after a couple of trips backwards and forwards you soon get use to it and the walk is pleasant and good for you after all the lovely food you will experience you will be grateful to walk it off. The rooms are very clean and our cleaner used to make origami flowers and animals with our towels every day which put a smile on our face. Our room was a basic twin overlooking the pool but they have suites and bungalows on offer of all shapes and sizes. There’s an empty fridge and Sky TV in all rooms. Pool towels are available everyday. Both hotels have their own pools and lunch time restaurants but all the activities and entertainment only happen in the main pool which made life nice for those who prefer piece and quiet. There’s a lot of sunbeds in rows around the pool which by the end of the week when the weather was better it felt like being in a sardine tin. I would have gone on the beach but the wind kicks up a lot of sand. I was hoping for more garden to sit in. 3 restaurants. 1 Asian (Chinese) and 1 Canarian / Mexican you have to book into these at reception and as these are very popular it’s best to book early. Both have 2 sittings. 1 Main. Now the main restaurant is a whole new ball game. For some stupid reason they thought that they can join two hotels with about 300 rooms in each but feed everyone from the one restaurant. People going in all directions for their food was like watching ants at work. The food is very good and I think the only food you would get outside the hotel that they didn’t do would be a T Bone steak because they do normal steak and everything else. The wine and beer is local and on tap all day long but don’t worry too much about getting drunk as it seemed quite mild. The Bar outside the restaurant serves up shorts, cocktails. You name they have it. The entertainment is the best I’ve ever seen in one hotel. The team work really hard putting on a different show each night. The little ones are entertained until 21:30 then is mum & dads time. My only criticism is that the main language is German followed by Spanish, Dutch, French, English which got a bit tiresome when a joke is told. On the whole this was one of the best Riu I’ve stayed in and I can really recommend it to others.

We had a 10 day holiday early in Dec. We just managed to make Manchester airport.
This is the 4th Riu hotel we have visited & apart from Cyprus, all are excellent.
We arrived & found the room was very clean & everything worked. (seen comments on the beds, & yes I do agree that the breaks could be better.
We enjoyed the self service buffet & we never used the special themed resteraunts.
We found the food variable & well cooked.
The pools we fine ( some are heated & some not.
Always were able to find a sun bed.
All the staff, I found were very helpful & quick to respond to our needs
We found the whole holiday very relaxing & have booked again for the end on Nov.
Small minor issues.
The beach is across a main road & the hotel has no sun beds or parasols there. This could be an improvement
Afternoon snacks usually around 4.30 pm+ were usually left unattended & were sometimes not as appetising as could be.
All in all, I enjoyed this holiday as good as the caribean with a cost saving

a good hotel but spoiled by the excessive smoking, you cannot enjoy a open air eating due to people smoking next to you and next to the food on the buffet counters and in the evening you cannot sit out again due to no comfortable aera for non smokers. management seem happy with this arrangement when questioned about it .Spains smoking ban started on 4 jan 2011 we were there from 16 to 20 jan 2011
SO TO SUM IT UP IF YOU SMOKE GREAT HOTEL IF NOT A POOR HOTEL
