A few years ago my husband and I stayed in Los Fariones, and had one of the best holidays ever. We liked the location of the hotel, the grounds, and above all the food. So we returned on 1 October this year in expectation of a great time. Unfortunately, we were somewhat disappointed - for various reasons.

(1) We thought that the whole hotel was badly in need of updating - corridor carpets were faded and stained and bedroom furniture and carpets had become quite shabby. Having said that, the housekeeping staff kept the bedrooms very clean.

(2) We felt that the quality of the food was not as good as before. On our earlier holiday, dinner had waiter service, and this time was buffet. That in itself didn't matter, but the meat was nearly always tough - either poor quality or badly cooked.

(3) We thought the dining room was grossly under-staffed, and was the cause of an incident on about the third day of our holiday which really spoilt our holiday. On the first two mornings when we went down to breakfast at around 9.00 a.m. (breakfast was until 10.00 a.m.) we could not find a table that had been re-laid, so we had to go looking for cups, cutlery etc. which, when we found out where everything was, was not a problem. However, on the third day we decided we would collect everything for the table first so that when we got our hot food it would be hot; so when we entered the dining room we headed straight for the cups. My husband had just put his hand on two cups and saucers when the head waiter appeared from around a corner and issued a stream of Spanish at us, which we didn't understand, but everyone around immediately turned around and looked at us. He then indicated, mainly by sign language that he didn't want us carrying cups - although we were just about to go and carry pots of tea and coffee, etc. He then indicated a table to which HE had to bring cups, and told us to ask a waiter for cups in future. We were in the dining room taking our breakfast for 45 minutes, during which time no waiter came to any table in our vicinity to clear tables or anything else. We were extremely embarrassed at what had happened and decided to report the incident to the manager, who was a young lady of around 30 years of age. She told us that he was normally very nice and would want to apologise to us. In the evening we (reluctantly) went down for dinner, and the same head waiter was hovering around the door area, came over to us, and told us that he had been merely trying to help us. To crown it all, on the last morning when we were having breakfast, at a table near an exit to an outdoor eating area, with a flight of steps down to it, the same head waiter was walking about, near our table, with a tray of cups in his hands, when he was approached by another guest, and with a smile gave him two cups off the tray -,after which the guest proceeded down the steps outside. This was just the last straw, but we didn't complain again. Maybe we should have, but we had just had enough! This is not an experience which would entice one to return, and we certainly won't.

(4) On our previous holiday we had booked into the Los Fariones Aparthotel which is next door, and on arrival were upgraded to the hotel on a full board basis. We didn't know if this was common practice, so rather than take the chance on this occasion we booked into the hotel, which of course was somewhat more expensive. Also we found that there is no full board available at all now, so of course we had to pay for our lunches as well. We then found when we got talking to other guests that most of them had been upgraded from the aparthotel. We were also told that when some other guests were shown the hotel rooms they elected not to take the upgrade, as the accommodation in the aparthotel was much better.

(5) We happened to make a comment to another guest that we were disappointed to find that there was no fridge in our room, and were surprised to hear that she had one in her room. We decided to enquire at reception, and were told that one would be provided. It was, but since there was no space for it in the room, it had to go on the balcony. This of course meant that because of the flex the door could no longer be fully closed.

Room Tip: Ask to see your room, as some are bigger, some have fridges, and some have better views than others, though all rooms are facing the sea.

We were upgraded to this hotel as the suite hotel (next door) was being upgraded. We were given a 4 bedroomed house within the hotel which was great for 5 people! The hotel is very clean, & spacious but really could do with an update. The pool needs to be heated in the winter months as too cold (evident by the number of people in the pool). There are not enough sunbeds around the pool. Unless you are willing to get up very early put a towel on a bed and sit there until the pool man has finished his shift at 8.15 am you will NOT get a sunbed. One day that we managed to get sunbeds (was sat there from 8 am), the 2 adjacent sunbeds had been reserved with towels. A couple arrived at 16.00 and used them for 45 minutes max. Too many people reserving and then not using. We ate breakfast and evening meal in restaurant. This was a buffet with plenty of choice. Hotel is in a excellent location right between the old and the new towns. There is direct access to a private beach for hotel guest use only. Did not see another hotel that would rather have stayed in.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room to the left is you want to be able to access the free wifi

We were scheduled to stay at their suits, but I guess they were overbooked and gave us free dinner every night if we stayed at the hotel instead. First we got a very small room and had it changed to a larger one on one of the wings. It had a small sitting room and a balcony overlooking the ocean, a small refrigerator and a fan. The rooms are tired but clean. Service was excellent. Mostly German and English senior citizens. WI-Fi did not work in the room. The food was pretty good for a buffet and there were several choices every-night in the grill as well as the trays. We rented a car right at the hotel lobby and had no trouble parking it outside every night. Bottle of wine and fruit the first day was very nice. It was a good stay and would recommend.

Room Tip: We stayed in 310

we had a most enjoyable stay in this holet between 15 and 20 October 2012. The rooms were adequate. the food was very good even though the buffet became kiotic at times. the lounge area was good and the alcove beach was excellent. the staff were friendly and helpful. there is absolutely no reason to complain - most relaxing

Room Tip: choose close to reception and above the tree line with beach view

We loved our week at this hotel. The location, the gardens, the little beach are just not found in this price range elsewhere. The hotel itself is spacious and cool, despite lack of airconditioning. Large fans in the bedrooms work very well. Every room has a sea view and we slept to the sound of waves every night. The food was excellent, varied and warm. The staff were very courteous. There are always things to complain about if you look for them, but overall, this was a wonderful experience and we want to return.

Room Tip: all rooms have a sea view
