“THE GLUMS”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

On arrival we did have a issue with the room allocated we booked twin rooms and were given a themed family apartments. After a long wait the manager and rep did issue new rooms.
On a whole the hotel is a bit worn in places and needs a lick of paint, we fond most meals enjoyable mainly breakfast. Our only complaint was the staff mainly in the snack bar they were sullen and not very helpful.

This is my 2nd stay at the Sol. Stayed for 5 days 18th-23rd March s/c in apartment. Hotel very clean. Rooms clean , cleaned regularly, plenty towels. Room 1208 nice pool view. Everything you need to do basic self catering. Had breakfast once only, 6euro, worst ever!! all food horrible & birds picking at bread/fruit. Lovely Irish breakfast in the Costa Sal, just beside the sol, nicest tea!!. Reception staff ok. Plenty of sun loungers. Entertainment seemed good. Very cheap to eat out so s/catering a better option. Matagorda shopping centre basic but nice.
Taxi's cheap & plentiful. Hotel 10min from airport. Would definetly stay again.

Room Tip: put preference when booking I got my request . room1208 good pool view

We stayed for a week in the Sol Hotel Matagorda in Lanzarote in late February. Having read several negative reviews on Tripdvisor especially in relation to the food, we were a little apprehensive prior to arrival. However, overall we were very happy with the hotel and found very little to fault with it. The rooms are extremely spacious and comfortable as are the accompanying bathrooms, and all have a mini-fridge, several English TV channels, and balconies. We found the staff very pleasant, efficient and helpful throughout, The pool area is well organised-there are three pools (although the larger two are unheated and quite chilly for February) and plenty of sunbeds with free towels on loan for the duration. The location is superb-right on the promenade with access via a security controlled gate, and it's a two minute walk to Matagorda Shopping Centre with many restaurants and bars etc. Finally to the food-no we didn't find it terrible at all and we're both seasoned travellers. Both breakfast and dinner was self service all-you-can-eat with plenty of variety for both. Breakfast included an excellent selection of breads and pastries, juices, teas and coffees, yogurts, fruit, cereals, eggs cooked in a variety of formats including fried, omlette and scrambled, pancakes bacon, cheeses, ham, and the typically spanish churros. Dinner options did not overly repeat themselves for the week we were there, and while not in the gourmet category, it was perfectly pleasant. We were also pleasantly surprised by the cheapness of drink at the bar, where a glass of wine only set us back 2.20 euro. The only complaint we had was in relation to internet charges on the public PC's and the poor quality of wi-fi. All things considered we felt that we got good value for money and we would certainly go back..

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor facing the seafront

We booked and paid for a twin room with a sea view. They put us in an apartment. After a row with reception (whom I might add were very rude) we were given a lovely room the next day. Cannot understand why they do not give you the room you booked and paid for in the beginning. The reception staff were very unprofessional and rude. Not a good first impression. The rest of the stay was fine. Breakfast very good and hotel very clean. If I am to return I would need to be guaranteed that I would be given what I request. I was not the only guest that this happened to.

Room Tip: Top floor 1412 onwards good sea view and quiet

We opted for the all inclusive option here.
The bedrooms were OK, better than what we have had before in Lanzarote, decent size spacious and fairly clean, the room floor tiles looked grubby and if you walked around in your bare feet this would end up black. The room we stayed in could have done with a lick of paint to freshen things up, but overall the room we were happy with. It is pot luck wether you get a sea view or mountain view. I'd say both have pros and cons. Montain view is what we had but we'd the sun in the evening after we left the beach and returned to our room.

Staff in general were very good, though they could have done with somene else in the snack bar area, only one person there, very little help and hardly smiled. The area around the snack bar there was food on the floor, birds eating the scraps on tables, spilt drinks not cleaned up etc etc.

We went all inclusive, food was OK. The problem was it was always cold or at best luke warm. Food in the snack bar, steer clear of as it was always cold. The buffet food, there was always a good selection, however always cold. Real pity as some of it was looked well and was tasty. Bird problem nibbling at the bread here too as is in most parts of the hotel, and infact anywhere. They have made efforts to combat this by putting up netting but the wee one gets through.

Self catering or half board is the way to go here, taxi ride though to Peurto Del Carmen if you are eating out, small complex down the road, very little on offer though.

We stayed at this Hotel from March 3rd to 11th. It was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in in over 30 years of travelling. The last 5 years we have had all inclusive in Greece, Maderia, and Egypt. (all we expected and more)
When arriving at check in, there were two people checking at the desk, one of whom promptly
left us at the desk and walked away. No explanation, no apology. (Aparently her shift had ended!)
That left one man only to check in, and answer two telephones at the same time.
After check in, we had to find our room, ouside, in the rain, up two steep path ways, to find the keys did not open the room. We asked a cleaner to let us in, and were so upset when we saw the room. It was a self-catering unit, .very well used, smelly, and bedclothes so old, covers with pulled threads all over, overlooking the childrens play area. I called reception asking to be moved to a double room, as booked but they said they were unable to as they were full.
Never the less, my husband went back to reception and requested to see the manager.
She arranged to move us straight away.
The room allocated was acceptable in comparison to the previous one, but still old bedlinen, and the bathroom extractor fan not working. there was a large leak stain in the ceiling above the bed.
The food was poor to very poor, and the dining room looked like a canteen. we had booked 1/2 board, but eat out in the evening and lunch time.
Our room was cleaned most days, but at a different time each day, ranging from 8,20am on our last day, to 3.00pm in the afternoon.
There was no free wi-fi available, and a charge of 2 euros for 15mins.
The acutual resort was clean and friendly, and the promenade was lovely.
We would not re-commend this hotel to anyone, and may not return to Lanzarote after this horrible experience.

Room Tip: You cant choose a particular room, as they will allocate whatever they want to.

Just had two weeks at, this hotel, and had such a good time. The hotel itself is very clean, we had a nice spacious apartment with a fabulous sea view, and it was cleaned practically everyday and towels were changed whenever we asked ,by dropping the dirty one on the floor- which is what they ask you to do . We found the staff very helpful, yes there was the odd gloomy face, but not surprising when you heard the way some guests spoke to them ! The food was not bad at all, no different from most all inclusive whether in spain or turkey etc, catering for many nationalities, don't know why us brits expect a full english when we go away !

The location of the hotel is good, it is not in Puerto Del Carmen, but Matagorda and it is situated between two nice shopping centres with bars, restuarants and shops and of course the beach is right there in front of the hotel. a taxi into puerto Del Carmen costs 4.70 Euro.

Anyway we are certainly back now , freezing but nicely tanned thank you very much !!

So go and enjoy - as I am sure you will unless you are ultra picky!
