“Fabulous food and amazing location”
Reviewed May 14, 2011

This restaurant came highly recommended to us by a number of friends who live on the island, and we weren't disappointed.

My fish was superbly fresh and cooked perfectly, with a terrific green sauce which was almost sweet, My wife had a huge piece of fillet steak in a sauce.

When reading a 5* menu, it is often quite difficult to anticipate exactly how the dish will be presented and how it will taste. With the dessert, this was certainly the case, but it was a fantastic surprise! A touch of Heston Blumenthal with a deconstructed Mohito at one end of the dish, and a chocolate cigar with burnt sugar "ash", a crispy casing and wonderfully rich mousse filling. My wife had a smile on her face for days afterwards!

The service was very good but the only criticism could have been, that they were slightly more attentive. However, this is a personal choice, as some diners prefer an unobtrusive table waiter/ waitress.

The view from the restaurant was spectacular as they have their own swimming pool which was beautifully lit, and added to the ambience. The background music again was quiet and either classical or local, which again enhanced the complete dining experience.

Although the bill was not inexpensive, you'd be paying at last 3 or 4 times the amount in a London restaurant, and you wouldn't get the view or weather. If you have a careful budget, it's well worth a visit for a special celebration. It's still good value for money if you are happy to pay a little more for top food. I believe they do a breakfast menu and lunch menu which is more economical with less lavish dishes, but we didn't get the opportunity to test it this time.

Great food service & location. For first timers get a taxi, hard to find & parking limited. Just behind old town in Carmen. We ate here twice in 1 week. more expensive than most but worth it, cheaper than at home. Roast lamb for 2 FAB! There is even a kids play area on site for the little ones.

“Wonderful atmosphere and food”
Reviewed March 20, 2011

We visited this Restaurant twice during our holiday. Fabulous surroundings in a very upmarket villa complex, which did take a bit of finding on foot but no problem to taxi driver on the second occasion. Attentive service, excellent menu and a good choice of 'specials'. First visit we had veal and the fish of the day followed by a beautifully presented dessert. Second visit we shared smoked salmon from Uga, both had different fish of the day then we shared a strawberry dessert which had the lightest pastry and fresh cream (not the canned stuff you get everywhere else). Only comment would be to watch out when paying the bill by card that you are charged in Euro's and not pounds as costs a little more when converted. Will definitely go back on next holiday in Lanzarote.

“Excellent food and setting”
Reviewed March 10, 2011

Weve been to the arena restaurant twice now and on each occassion found the food and service amongst the best on the island, we actually have a villa about 200 metres away and didnt bother trying it out at first, but one night decided to stroll round and we were more than pleasantly surprised. The food is first class the service 5 star and the setting is one of the best around i highly reccommend a visit.

“Truly poor on every level”
Reviewed March 5, 2011

We read the reviews and heard on the local grapevine that Arena was probably the best restaurant in town and sadly it wasn't when we dined there last night, it was truly awful. Maybe they were having an 'off' night, maybe the head chef was on holiday... who knows?? The bottom-line remains the same sadly... very poor service, very mediocre food at very high prices.
For starters the ‘local’ smoked salmon was of a similar quality to that which I regularly buy from my local Aldi store, yes it was arranged rather prettily on my plate and was centred around a slice of orange topped with some tasteless something or other…neither of us could work out precisely what it was. We also ordered the Lamb Ravioli which was truly dreadful. It came to the table lukewarm and swimming in grease. What added insult to injury was the fact that it took a good 45 minutes from ordering for the starters to arrive!!
For mains, I had the Hake and my partner ordered the Filet Steak with Morel sauce. Again, there was an utterly unacceptably long delay for the food to arrive and when it did again it was simply most disappointing. The Hake was slightly overcooked but it was really salty too, the beef was cooked to perfection but strangely tasted of liver and the sauce was similar to school dinner gravy. Both dishes were served with lukewarm vegetables… a tasteless slice of courgette, two cold slices of potato and something orange that we could not identify as sadly it had no flavour at all.
Did we bother with a pudding? Nope. The whole experience including half a bottle of very ordinary red wine cost nearly 90 Euros. Was there a saving grace? Yes… the restaurant and grounds are utterly charming and most tasteful, it’s a shame that the food wasn’t!
