We wanted to try somewhere different and were very pleased we did. We made a reservation but when we arrived on a Sunday evening, there was only one other couple there. The owner came to greet us and and talked briefly about our choices from the menu. When we had finished our starters, he came back again and we had an interesting conversation about Madeira, his birth place and families. The food was delicious and we were very pleased we made the decision to go there. We would certainly recommend The Black Scabbard.

Ate in this family owned and run restaurant recently as part of a group. We were the only diners - should have been a warning sign. Majority of group had Prawn Rissoles for starter - bland flavour and unimaginative presentation. Sauce on the chicken livers was barely peri-peri and had strong undertone of vinegar. Disaster struck with mains when my wife's sole - on special - did not arrive with the other mains. It had obviously been overlooked in the kitchen and when it did arrive 20 mins later it was not cooked through and had to be returned. The missing dish could perhaps be excused as a mix up in the orders for a large group but undercooked presentation was a cardinal error. When eventually returned to the table, a further ten minutes later, it was the same piece of fish now saturated in the original sauce, flavourless and unappetising. Dessert choice was all chocolate based dishes or vanilla ice cream. The wines were a choice of 2 whites or 2 reds - all cheap blends at premium prices.
This is all very sad as the restaurant was in ascendency until a few weeks ago when there was a family rift from which it has clearly not recovered. I would hesitate to revisit.

Fed up with hotel food we saw this Portuguese restaurant by the side of the road. Being early evening we dropped in and what a wonderful find. Operated by Portuguese husband and wife, Maria and Paulo, with true Portuguese hospitality and service, we sat and gorged ourselves, sitting outside, taking in the spell binding view of the mountains.
Do not miss the beef espetata, perfectly marinated and coupled with the best prawns we had eaten for a long time. Make sure you have the home made Peri Peri sauce, it is dangerous but delicious! All are served with freshly made potato chips, a delight after being served the frozen variety for all of our trip. All washed down with a very reasonably priced bottle of wine, we couldn't wait to return the following day for lunch. A plate of prawns, an espetata, fries and salad and a bottle of wine, came to R245.00.
If you visit the Drakensbergs or more specifically Winton, you will doing yourself a miss service if you do not eat at the delightful restaurant.

We arrived and were met with a warm handshake. The food was very good and the best espetata I have ever had. Very tasty. Their portions are big and the desert was to die for.

If ever I go to the Drakensberg again I will make a point to visit them again
