“Unpleasant hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2008

Our experience of this hotel was very poor.

We stayed for one night as a family group, occupying several rooms in the stable block. The decor was dated and tired, mattresses saggy and the central heating did not seem to be working properly. One room smelled very strongly of tobacco smoke. Another had no towels.

Breakfast was a fiasco. There was no tea available (apparently the water heater had broken down!), so it was stewed coffee or nothing. There was no toast offered. It appeared that they had run out of bread.

Wouldn't recommend this hotel under any circumstances

I have stayed here once before because it is in a convenient location for visiting a particular client. It is really a pub with a few rooms and cannot really be called a hotel. The bar is ok and the bar food is of good pub food standard. The bar staff are not proficient in handling bookings and greeting guests, some training needed here. My allocated room had not been cleaned, the receptionist did not know how to print my VAT receipt. breakfast starts too late (7:30) I was allocated another room in the main building which was comfortable and clean but in need of refurbishment, the en suite bathroom was very good except there was no hot water the following morning. In short I will not be going there again!

Unfortunately I wasn't present at check-in or I would have asked to be reallocated another room. Although the room was clean, had queen-size bed, tea making facility and wardrobe an illegal cigarette type-smell greeted us and everyone else staying there along the corridor before the door to the room was opened. We think it may have been from the mouldy shower and carpet in the bathroom...... Thankfully we only had to stay one night (wedding reception stay-over). I wasn't particularly looking forward to breakfast but was pleasantly surprised (in fact two people in our party enjoyed it so much they had another)! The guy serving was polite and very helpful. I understand that the hotel closes in January for a refurbishment - good idea!

Stayed for 2 nights for a wedding, reception held there. The exterior and downstairs interior were of a high standard. The accommodation was of a very poor standard. Initially there were problems with the booking arrangements even though we had booked months in advance. We were supposed to have a family room and were firstly given a stable bedroom in the grounds which had just one double bed. Then we were given a room in the hotel which had 3 single beds. It was shabby and in desperate need of renovation. The carpets were dirty, beds had dirty headboards, mattresses on beds were so soft you sank. The "en suite" which was a shower sink and toilet in a very small space smelt of bad drains and then worst of all the shower didn't work when we all needed to bathe before the wedding. The staff gave us 4 different room keys and none of the showers worked. Luckily one room had a bath. Hairdryers were available on request but when requested there wasn't one. The bride and groom were disappointed by the bridal suite which i personally did not see but I cannot imagine it to be of a high standard when all rooms we saw were poor. Cannot fault the downstairs bar area, reception room, quality of food or staff, but the whole experience was marred by the accommodation. It was worse than any bed and breakfast i have ever stayed in and a lot of work needs to be done to bring it up to the standard you would expect for a hotel. we were charged £60 per night instead of £75 but I wouldn't stay there again for free. Very disappointed.

  • Liked — The facilities were good, bar, function room nd food.
  • Disliked — No working showers, poor shabby rooms.

Business Trip.
Accommodation in stable block annex. The room was pretty clean but VERY hot with no air con or fan and only two small windows. Mattress was very saggy (and needs replacing) and pillows hard. Toilet seat needed refitting and there were no toothbrush glasses. One of the cups on the breakfast table was not very clean. More attention to detail is needed. The pub-style menu is limited but good value for money and well served.

  • Liked — Fairly spacious bathroom
  • Disliked — Room far too hot with very poor ventilation

I Stayed at The Elms on a buisness trip, it was described as a nice hotel in nice settings. I was concerned when I saw my room was in a two storey block of accommodation to the side of the main building but thought the room was acceptable. At 8pm the music started and did not end till 1.15am, I could hear every word to every song as the rooms have no double glazing. There is no phone in the room to contact anyone either. I had to endure noise till 3am with drunken staff running around the grounds outside my room as well as other guests. The walls and ceilings are paper thin and every noise can be heared, the couple next door were noisy long after the music. As a lone female I was very affraid, I had no way to get to reception to complain without passing the drunken mob. This hotel is not worthy of any stars as it turned out the noise was staff having a party. £50 a night for a single room what a rip off. NOt suitable for anyone other than drunken yobs. I'm no shrinking violet but it was a nightmare.

  • Liked — Leaving in the morning
  • Disliked — The noise all night
