“Don't ever go here”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

First the good news: as we drove up the hotel looked lovely –the receptionist (Amy) was very friendly and efficient and soon had our details confirmed. When we left she also gave us a partial refund as our stay had been so bad.
We were in the converted stables to the side of the building.
Now the bad news – and plenty of it , the first thing we noticed was a large roof slate hanging dangerously over the edge of the guttering (if it had fallen it could have killed someone!) which although we immediately reported to reception nothing was done about it. The room was really hot –so we turned the radiators off and opened the small window but it made little difference so we saw the manager (Graeme Cameron) who was very unsympathetic with his off-hand manner: he said the hotel was full so we couldn’t change rooms, and they had no fans –so he could do nothing to make our stay comfortable. That evening there was a live band playing in the function room very near our room - which we had not been informed of previously. They played very loudly until about 1:30 am. There was no chance we could get any sleep. Then as the drunken people came out of the hall they were shouting to each other and playing loud music for about another hour. Then someone started a very loud motorbike that had been parked just near our room. No chance of sleeping –and as we didn’t have a TV remote (and the reception was not manned) we had to put up with it until about 3:00 am when it eventually went quiet and we got a few hours sleep. In the morning we decided to leave early without breakfast as we couldn’t bear to stay there a minute longer. We also noticed in the car park next to the rooms there was old furniture, an old mattress, rotting grass cuttings and a dead bird.
Nice hey!

We stayed here for one night in room 19 of the annexe. The room and bathroom were a good size and clean but there were sufficient shortcomings which meant we wouldn't stay here again. Specifically, there were no drinking glasses in the room for water; there was nowhere to hang clothes (no coat hangers and no clothes rail), so we had to put coats over the backs of the chair. There were no drawers and only one small shelf for folded clothes. The sink drained very slowly and seemed partially blocked and the loo flush handle was loose and needed several attempts to work.
Previous reviewers have mentioned the creaking floorboards and whilst I realise that it is due to it being previously a stable it did prove to be a real problem for our ability to get a good nights sleep. We were awoken by people coming in late and by others leaving early (early as in 5.30am!)
We didn't eat at the hotel.
Reception were generally helpful, giving us a glass from the bar when we requested one, but it felt unusual to be queueing up behind pub customers buying drinks when we checked in at the reception area, which was also the bar. We weren't actually sure we were at the reception until a lady came to check us in and some signage would have been useful.
The hotel is in a nice area with a good size car park but we felt overall that the establishment was trying to be a mass market pub (meals are two for ten pounds) at the expense of being a nicely maintained hotel.

On arrival at this hotel all looked lovely from the outside. We were greeted by a pleasant young lady in Reception and were allocated a room in the stable annex. We were very pleasantly surprised, the decor was lovely, the room was of ample size with a good size private bathroom. The best part was the wonderfully powerful shower. Only very slight downfall was the creeking floorboards in our room along with the room next door as we could hear their every move.. however this did not put us off and would return again.

Stayed here on the way home from a trip to lego land with the intention of visiting shirwood forest but due to the bad weather we didn't go. The staff were very pleasant and check in was quick .We were in a room in the stable block. It was classed as an executve room and it was nice enough. It was a large room that was divide into two rooms and a bathroom which meant the children had their own space .We ate in the pub on the evening. The food was reasonable with two meals for 10 pound although the portions were't huge.Overall the room was pleasant and having the pub next door was convenient.

Myself and my partner stayed here for one night on the bank holiday monday of the jubilee weekend. We attended a wedding reception. We booked the room about 2 months prior to travelling and paid £60.00 for a double room which excluded breakfast.

Although small, our room was spotless and comfortable. Extra pillows were located in the wardrobe and the bed was one of the most comfortable we've had. The flat screen TV was of good quality and we had decent sized coffee mugs for a change! The bathroom was small but clean. We didn't have any problem with noisy neigbours. And the late check out was a
plus-11am on weekends and bank hols. We slept very well. Went for a couple of drinks prior to going out in the restaurant-very reasonable prices and friendly staff. The restaurant provides typical pub grub-including breakfast at £7.50. We didn't try any of the food but the menu was big and included specials and kids meals. A family/large group could eat here very cheaply. The outside seating area is lovely with plenty of space for kids to run about. Also, very adequate parking at the front of the building.

On the downside-the rooms are quite small so whilst they were great for a night, a longer stay may be pushing it. They are also very warm and quite dark-girls, you will have to sit next to a window to do your make-up!! Whilst we heard no noise from neighbours we did hear pipes banging loudly early in the morning this is annoying someone turns a tap on you here BANG BANG BANG. The restaurant is very reasonably priced but could do with a bit of renovation-the furniture was worn. However, we could smell fresh paint in the accomodation area, so they are obviously making an effort to do it up.

On the whole it served our purpose well and I'd be happy to recommend it.

We had arranged for refreshments to be served here after my father-in-law's funeral and can only say we were ripped off. We paid £7.95 a head for 50 people and were presented with a couple of trays of sandwiches that had obviously been made for some time as they were curling up at the corners and drying out, very cheap sausage rolls which tasted disgusting and the cheapest possible swiss rolls and scones (cut into halves with butter and jam to make it look like there were a lot of them). They just didn't provide decent quality food let alone the fact that had 50 people turned up then it is doubtful there would have been enough food. The coffee was a joke - someone had to ask the staff to put more coffee in as you could literally see the bottom of the cup. They made no effort to make the room look inviting; not even pulling across the curtain that splits the room into two and one of the staff members was still cleaning mirrors when guests were arriving. The room hadn't even been cleaned properly...it looked like it was some time since it was vaccumed. In fact the whole place looks tired and grimey. Due to the occasion we really didn't feel like complaining on the day but felt we were ripped off big time and would certainly not recommend anyone having a function here!

This is our second time staying at the hotel, and all I can stay is what a difference! When we stayed over two years ago and we were allocated a room in the stable block. Upon arrival I said I wouldn,t let my dog stay in there as it was disgusting and we were then allocated a room in the main building which wasn,t much better, but clean.

This time though after reading that the rooms had been refurbished we decided to give it another go as it is close to my mums house. We booked a executive room for us and a standard double for our daughter and fiance. Both were in the stable block and the executive room on the ground floor had a small lounge with flat screen tv, separate bathroom and double bed with lovely egyptian cotton linen. All very nice. One thing though, elms managers. Send somebody around the back of the building to clear the debris of empty bottles and rubbish that was on view when you opened the bedroom curtains! Our daughters room was again clean and tidy, this was upstairs. Separate bathroom, but what is needed is small complimentary toiletries aside from the dove soap holders that are fixed to the wall. Reasonably priced bar menu with literally everything on offer with chips! Two for ten pounds etc with reasonably priced drinks.

Very shabby dining room though. Money needs to be spent here too. i.e. paint peeling off radiatiors, chipped table and chairs etc.

Breakfast ok, but we paid £64 per night so I would have expected it to be included at this price for a hotel of this quality.

All in all though it did the job for our fleeting visit to Retford, but still NO BABY COTS!

200 miles on a train with a travel cot is not good!!!

Room Tip: book executive room direct with hotel rather than agency. You get more space and little less expensi...
