Elche is a phenomenon in itself as it has thousands of palm trees. As you travel around the town they are everywhere. Although this is a little away from the main tourist areas, if you have a car it is well worth a visit.

Elche is worth a trip, but not on a sunday when its 36 celcius an virtually everything (tourist office, cathedral, museum, most restaurants an bars) is closed.
We were very happy to find the bar across from the cathedral.
But, the palm groves along the river (a 1 mtr wide trickle in juli) are spectacular and the restaurants look good.
The center of Elche has a nice feel but the old part is small and in a few locations spoilt by new buildings. And the newer part looks like it could be buzzing on any other day.

Elche is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. There are palms everywhere. The municipal park is stunning and I could have spent the whole day in there. Lots of places for children to play.

Difficult to find from the motorway as there are no signs at all. Impossible to park if you are lucky enough to find it, we drove around for an hour and finally gave up. We don't have a problem parking in any other Spanish cities including Madrid. We would have loved to visit the other attractions but had nowhere to put the car.
