We heard about Wild Horses from a friend who lives in Harrismith when we were looking for a wedding venue.. We went to view in the beginning of the year and loved the place from the start. Seeing as we love the dam and the lodge was breathtakingly beautiful. A venue you only dream about and hear about in fairy tales came true. We stopped looking for venues straight away as we fell in love with Wild Horses and the people were amazing. Both Hosts are amazing people, Esmeralde (true organiser, and makes mouth-watering cocktails :-) was also our wedding planner and she did an excellent job (I am so grateful for everything she planned and organised) and van Heerden (makes food to die for) Thanks Wild Horses for the most amazing wedding (15 September 2012) we could ever dream off. We left after the wedding not only happy that we had the most amazing and perfect day we could wish for with special memories but with new friends we made as well. We can only thank Es and van Heerden for special and fun times and also lots of laughter and for making our special day even more special and also the owners who were there to help if we needed anything and who also shared in our special day. We’ve been to Wild Horses a couple of times, sometimes just popped in and twice stayed over (when we viewed and also our wedding weekend) and everytime we’ve been met with the same friendliness and efficiency as the first time we’ve been to Wild Horses. We will definitely be back often.

Room Tip: All rooms are stunning and have gorgeous views

I question when this establishment received their 5* rating as it fell short of such a rating - There is not 24 hour service. You can only have brown bread (no white or whole wheat, or other) for toast in the morning. Don't expect a muffin in the morning even though you have asked the night before, you are told there is no flour !!

The Manager is aka chef, aka handyman (plumber, electrician etc), aka Front manager, aka general manager aka barman - his wife who should be the front person only does admin and don't expect a smile

As I like my privacy and like to keep to myself and not interact with other guests when I am away (as it is my 'recharge the battery time') & my 55th birthday, we asked to have the dinning table for supper in a room they call the cellar. As the Manger was more than quin-tasking did not notice we had arrived I had to call for assistance

Even though the establishment rates itself as 5* dont expect a chocolate on the pillow or tea time mid morning or mid afternoon, you must pre-ask for it !!! Due to its decor and quality of decor I give it a maximum 4*

Our stay at Wild Horses was most enjoyable. Stunning setting, fantastic food, very relaxing and peaceful. The hosts are both attentive and welcoming, making you feel at home immediately. We were only able to stay one night but would have loved to stay longer.

When Chef Van Heerden makes a suggestion for breakfast take him up on it, you will not be disappointed. Both the 3 course dinner and breakfast were absolutely perfect and delicious.

We would definitely recommend the Lodge to anybody.

My husband and I spent a perfect romantic weekend at Wild Horses Mountain Lodge and enjoyed the tranquility of the environment as well as the hospitality of our hosts, Chef Van Heerden (who is an all-rounder young gentleman - also the "Captain of the Ship") and his charming wife, Esmeralde. One can enjoy an intimate dinner in the private wine cellar or opt to enjoy a superbly prepared three-course meal in the cosy dining area with a stunning view over the Sterkfontein Dam. The Guinea Fowl suite is tastefully decorated, comfortable and neat. The spa bath lends the room to a more romantic atmoshpere. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat cruise on the Sterkfontein Dam. The Dam's beautiful, clean water (no river flowing in or out of this Dam), is a deep blue colour and reminds one of ocean water. We spotted quite a few game along the banks of the river. The mountainous landscapes of this area are beautiful and a jewel of the Drakensbergs. The lodge also offers horse rides, spa treatments (although this must be booked in advance) and romantic picnics on the "koppie". A true treasure of the Drakensberg. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Guinea Fowl suite is a ground floor unit, has a spa bath and a view over part of the establishment...

We stayed only one night - but it was a perfect one!
Our hosts were warm and charming and the personal attention to detail, food and accommodation was evident. We enjoyed every minute of our stay.
The surrounding natural beauty allows for great walks with soul cleansing views. The area is teaming with wild life and it's a bird watchers paradise. We loved the "almost secret" drive along a winding, narrow road to find this hidden gem in the Drakensberg mountains on the Sterkfontein dam. The most perfect stress-relief weekend-break for Joburgers.
