“Lovely appealing house with fantastic views”

Hilltop Cottage in Collorus is one of the very best holiday rentals we've ever had. We'd a great week there in 2014 and were delighted to return. It's located on the Beara Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way, and has fantastic views across the bay to an ever-changing panorama of the mountains and headlands of the Iveragh Peninsula, where the famous Ring of Kerry is. On this occasion, the weather didn't give us much opportunity to sit out on the patio and gaze at the views but we knew they were there! And there was plenty else to enjoy in the house and in the area.

The house is genuinely old (quite unusual for rentals on Ireland's west coast - too many carbon copy bungalows) and has been wonderfully renovated in a way that makes it spacious and comfortable and yet showing its thick walls and other traditional features. It's full of interesting pictures and objects to look at along with cosy rugs and cheerful colours - so it's not a sleek or luxurious style, instead it's the kind of house that you know is genuinely loved and lived in.

Hilltop Cottage is incredibly quiet and peaceful: it's away from roads, traffic and towns, so the sounds to be heard are the birds, the wind in the trees and occasionally Colette's dogs. There are no shops, pubs or restaurants within walking distance but the house is so comfortable and well-equipped that we were very happy to eat there most evenings. It's about 20 minutes drive to Josie's lovely restaurant in Glanmore; a similar distance to the great Eyeries Bistro, and to O'Sullivan's pub and seafood bar in Kilmackillogue; and maybe half an hour to both Kenmare and to Castletownbere. So plenty of options - but visitors to Ireland should be aware that the roads are quite narrow and twisty in places!

As so many other reviewers have said, Colette is wonderfully welcoming and generous, and we enjoyed her tasty offers of eggs, potatoes and herbs, as well as conversations on life and culture in Beara and her travels elsewhere - but as noted in a previous review, she's also very good at allowing guests to enjoy our own company too.

Beara is still uncrowded and off the beaten tourist track, and at the same time has lots to do for anyone interested in hillwalking, garden visits, art galleries, archaeology, food, pubs, islands and much else. We had fantastic - and quite easy for anyone who's fairly fit - walks on the Beara Way nearby from Drung Hill to Cashelkeelty, on Knockatee, on the Rábach Way in a remote valley, along the Eyeries coastline, towards Crow Head south of Allihies and near the Dzochen Beara Buddhist Centre. There's a beautiful small beach for swimming at Garinish south of Allihies; there are incredible rock shapes and formations on the mountains; the views from the Healy Pass never fail to elicit gasps; there are several good pubs in the area including the justly famous McCarthy's Bar in Castletownbere; the new Beara Gallery only five minutes from Hilltop Cottage has interesting and affordable art for sale or simply for viewing, with a great welcome and lively chat from Sue; and the Garra Fadó garden and plant centre near Eyeries is another lovely and welcoming attraction.

We're delighted to have stayed at Hilltop Cottage again and hope this recommendation will encourage more guests to enjoy it as much as we did.

“Hilltop Cottage is a Reason Itself to Travel to Ireland”
Reviewed May 26, 2016 for a stay in May 2016

HIlltop Cottage is situated on the Beara Peninsua, one of Ireland's best kept secrets. If (and hopefully when) we return to Ireland, we'll skip Dingle and RoK and just spend all our time on the Beara because a week isn't enough to explore all it's treasures and soak in its beauty.

Hilltop Cottage itself is a beautifully restored farm cottage. It's got comfortable amenities such as wifi, a dishwasher, well stocked kitchen, central heating (but the wood stove is a better and more delightful heating alternative), and a clothes washer. But many of the details of its original life are still in the cottage and have been lovingly restored and highlighted. These details allow the cottage to retain its authenticity and connection to its past; when you are there, you feel as though you are in a home...not a vacation rental.

The cottage is situated with stunning....truly remarkable views of the water and rolling green hills. Colette, the owner, has restored the farm to honor its historical purpose by growing organic fruits and vegetables, herbs, and native flowers. She has a free range chicken coop in another portion of the property. It's beautiful and feels very alive. While we were there we felt like we were participating in the experience of living in Ireland, not just visiting and observing.

Colette herself is a lovely host. She is nearby and always available with recommendations for places to eat, visit, hike, and explore. Her love of the area is apparent. We enjoyed spending time talking to her and adored her three dogs, who were always up for a belly rub if offered.

We spent 2 weeks in Ireland and stayed in some nice accommodations throughout the country before coming to the Beara, but if/when we return to Ireland, we'll plan to spend our entire trip at Hilltop Cottage because it was there that we truly fell in love with Ireland.

“Our Favorite Place in Ireland: Colette's Cottage.”

My husband and I were touring Ireland for 11 weeks from August 30th to November 15th and stayed in many places over this time. This was, by far our favorite. We stayed at Collete's home for 2 weeks from September 26th to October 10th, 2015. The cottage is set on a hill with a sublime view overlooking Kilmakilloge/Collorus Bay. It is a place of quiet and rest, where your can refresh and renew your body and spirit. Colette provides a tasteful accommodation, filled with original art, antiques and an outside patio that has a handcrafted natural screen for privacy, while surrounded by a pastoral setting and the Wild Atlantic Way It is a traditional Irish cottage that has been transformed with all the modern conveniences, without losing its original beauty and charm. But, so much more than all this, is Colette herself, and her canine companions, Fifi, Foxy and Timmy. Colette is generous and kind, sharing bounty from her lovely vegetable garden and her delicious baking. Possessing great knowledge of this area and its history, Colette is a guide, as well. We went on several hikes together and discovered many hidden treasures of the Beara. There are also other fine places to visit nearby: Gleninchaquin Park; Derreen Gardens; lovely Kenmare (dont' miss Seafari EcoTour of Kenmare Harbor); Killarney National Park; touring the Wild Atlantic Way from Ardgrom to Allihies (a rapturous and thrilling ride); the Healy Pass with its fantastic vista and climb over the Caha Mountains; and lastly do not miss the excellent cuisine at Josie's in Lauragh. This is a wonderful place to stay and we highly recommend it, as we hope to return here again.

“Perfect relaxation with superb views”
Reviewed October 4, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We had two wonderful weeks here and just enjoyed the very local area, the views and the peace. Collette was amazing; we enjoyed her knowledge, fresh produce and returned home recharged. The weather was very mixed but the light and the rainbows well worth the rain. Crab sandwiches on the harbour were unforgetable. We walked most days, and loved the quietness and the many late morning starts . The log fire was fabulous. Thank you, we will return

“a cottage retreat to experience a simpler way of life”
Reviewed September 24, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

our second most enjoyable stay at hilltop cottage. We plan to return again. The reasons are many, The beautifully restored cottage, peaceful surroundings, but more importantly the warm welcome we always receive from Colette. Her connection to nature, knowledge of the surrounding countryside, love of animals and simpler life-style makes our visits richer and more meaningful.

My wife and I have rented cottages in the UK, France, Italy, and Ireland and this is the only cottage we have come back to a second time, and many of the other ones were wonderful. Colette has an artistic ability to mix interesting objects and art together with the authentic rustic features of this cottage, yet it has all the conveniences. Make sure you look through her great assortment of books. There are fabulous walks from the door down to the water, sheep out front to watch while you're sipping wine at the patio table, her loveable puppies and Colette is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Beara. She showed us great walks on the map as well as great places to eat and explore. This might be only cottage we'll ever stay at a third time!

“lovely cottage - exceptional views”
Reviewed July 16, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

The light around coastal cottages is almost always special and Hilltop Cottage is no exception. The inside is tastefully decorated more as a home than a "holiday let" . We spent cool evenings in front of the log stove and enjoyed selecting from the wide range of reading and dvd items. Days were spent exploring the exceptional coast and local towns or just "hanging out" and taking in the views as the light changed. Colette is an exemplary host and landlady, nothing is too much trouble and she takes the utmost care to ensure her guests enjoy their stay to the full. A cottage to please the sporty, active, artistic, romantic or just plain idle.
