Parkdean - Sundrum Castle Holiday Park
Reviewed May 27, 2011

My partner and 3 children went for a long weekend on the 13th may.first impressions on arrival was good.directions to caravan was not so good.there wasn't much space between caravans and if you had a car it was even less room.all the caravans at my wee site was full of cars so it looked very small.the pool was lovely my kids had a ball at it but it was very cold.first night we arrived we went to the kids club which was good but service at the bar was very slow but very friendly.at a certain time of night they put bingo on just after the kids entertainment so if you were still there with your kids god help you If they made a noise.we had to leave when it started cause my kids would not
Be quiet so I wasn't very happy about that.we had the chippy one night as well and I must say I binned my dinner it was disgusting.the on site shop is well stocked but a tad expensive but the staff are very friendly.we had breakfast one morning in the restaurant which was tasty enough but you had to pay for your tea and toast separate which does add up to be quite expensive.but kids couldn't go into playarea cause of dreadful weather.caravan was nice.only thing was tv remote didn't work and the signal was awful.very isolated if you didn't drive.but I would imagine it would have been a lot better if the british weather had been better.overall I would visit again.

We booked Sundrum Castle as a spur of the moment thing for a 7 day break over the Easter break (Friday to Friday), we had not heard anything about the site before our visit and had only previously ever been to Craig Tara in Ayr.

I don’t have many negatives to say about this caravan park, one thing i will say and it’s not really a negative, but just something to consider before booking, You really do benefit from a car when visiting this site, it’s about 4 miles from the centre of Ayr and can be costly using taxi’s (Approx £10 each way), there is seemingly a bus service runs to Ayr from the main road (This is a good 15 minute walk from the camp), if you do drive then the west coast is on your door step.

We don’t drive and still had a great trip, just wanted to make this clear to anyone as it is an additional expense.

Accommodation: Caravan was great, double bed, two other rooms with single beds and a pull out double bed in the lounge area of the van; we paid £270 for 7days, great price.

Onsite Attractions: They have a children’s play area, now it’s not the greatest but it kept my 5 year old and 2 year old happy, you can sit and have a drink or snack and watch the kids from either the bar or outside the bar (Both overlook the play area).

Restaurant: Great food and great prices, one of the most reasonable eating areas i have came across out of numerous parks (Craig Tara is the costliest and poorest quality i have came across), this also doubles as a bar and show area when in high season.

Show Bar: This is where the main entertainment is held, it can easily hold about 200 people and has an adults bar and a child area where they can get soft drinks and toys (Beware, it is like a magnet and will cost you a fortune, more so after a few drinks). The bar prices are great, on par with most town pubs, in this day and age you don’t find this too often, they normally inflate the prices given the captive audience.

On Site shop: Again, this is well priced and equipped; it’s a cost cutter and stocked everything you could need and more. For those who drive don’t feel obliged to stick to the onsite shop, you have the small town of Coylton which is just a 5 minute drive up the road, here you will find shops, bars and takeaways. Another slightly strange one i found was the lack of a cash machine onsite, they do not take card as payment and do not offer cash back, so again, Coylton is your nearest point of call for cash, this was my biggest gripe given i do not drive.

They have a heated swimming pull with a flume, the swimming is on hourly sessions and they have 2 adult only sessions during the week, the pool is not massive and not very deep, but this is great for the kids, not suited for those who want to do lots of swimming.

Lastly they have an outdoor football area, this is located next to the kids play area and means you can still have a snack or drink while watching your kids.

All in all its a great little park, it’s not as big as some and many may feel it isn’t as well equipped, but take my word, it’s got everything you need to keep you happy and entertained, we have two kids under 5 and they had a ball, we also managed to have a great time and will be returning again. I don’t normally do these sort of reviews, but i felt strongly enough to try and open people’s eyes to holidaying in Scotland, even more so the Scottish people, we have so much on our doorstep we sometimes think it has to be abroad to be fun, well that’s not the case, you can go to places like this and have a ball, we did, try it.

having just returned from the site i will start with some positives the site grass and gardens are maintained nicely and the caravan which we booked was top of the range and lovely . Other than that we found people to be less than friendly with the only exception being the young man who worked in the site shop. The facilities are not up to much the astro turf is ok with some wooden boarded fence around it and nothing organised on here just do your own thing! The pool changin rooms were so dirty i made my daughter keep her flip flops on and we never ventured back after one visit! There is a really poor crazy hole with no numbers or flags but they have the cheek to want to charge for this! One chip shop take away which was not tried and only saw it open once. The park is four miles from ayr and you really need a car to do anything or you ll be stuck here perish the thought ! Ayr has an excellent children play area just off the sea front but beware it feels very intimidating in the evening with many young boy racers using the immediate area as race circuit! All in all not to be repeated. To sum it up a "poor mans haven"

Just returned from our 3rd time at Sundrum and again we all loved it. (2 adults and 2 toddlers) We took our tourer for a long weekend. The touring block is very clean and well equipped, the showers have good pressure but do cool at peak times but this is to be expected. The park itself is very clean and staff are all friendly. The location is ideal for going into Ayr and enjoying what it has to offer. When the weather is good it is even better. The sight facilities are great just the right amount of activities for the size of the site. What else is good is that there is always a friendly fellow tourer willing to guide you into your pitch safely.

My only complaint is that when checking in late it is done at the bar and on all three occassions I have had to wait almost 20 minutes before being seen as there is only one person on the bar taking food and drink orders an no seperation for check in but I suppose it gives me 20 minutes away from the kids after being in the car with them for 45 minutes being over excited about visiting their favourite caravan park.

Looking forward to going again soon

This is a great site with loads to do - our caravan was booked privately through a webpage www.bebo.com/caravanayr . The van itself is right next to the faciities which meant we could watch the kids from the window but still be far enough away for peace and quiet. Our caravan was packed with games and dvd's for the kids which was great.
The linen was included too which was a bonus. The lady was really helpful and was really relaxed about us renting her new caravan. The site has great entertainment and we even got a few hours peace whilst the kids went to the kids club. Staff are very professional. There is no ATM on site but the spar shop 10 mins away has one which is handy. Great hol all round and would recommend the caravan site.

Great little park. Maxi and Milli worked their charms on our granddaughter. Nice clean pool. Excellent food reasonably priced. Even the dog loved it. Beautiful countryside with lots of long walks, very visitor friendly and good shopping in nearby Ayr. We'll be back!
