“One of the nicest places to stay in Yorkshire, a walkers heaven”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

We initally booked a room here in November for our wedding anniversary, as keen walkers we planned an 8 mile hike around the area but unfortunately we got lost (husbands fault) so decided to come back in December to complete the walk. We had a fabulous time on both occasions, the food was delicious to say the least, and very good value for money. The rooms have all been recently refurbished with beautifully locally crafted oak furniture, with fluffy pillows and divine duvets, the attention to detail was lovely. Breakfast very hearty and yet again all local food.
Thank you to the manager for your very kind and generous hospitality, we will visit again very soon.

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely hotel. The room was modern and excellent - the food truly delicious, breakfast and dinner. A lovely, friendly, warm and welcoming place to stay!
Can recommend without hesitation.

This really is a very fine hotel. The rooms are large and superb - all seems newly redeveloped, or refurbished, or something, up there and what you get is a lovely sort of "modest luxury", if that makes sense. Very classy, maybe a bit of a Scandinavian feel? Lots of wood and nice lighting; superb bathroom. The landlord kindly let me look round and I can confirm that all the rooms are equally gorgeous. It's really a very striking, high quality place. They could clearly have squeezed in a bit more accommodation if they'd gone for smaller bedrooms and bathrooms and instead they've clearly taken the high road for quality and, my goodness, it pays off.

We had a really fantastic meal in the restaurant. It was all great but I must mention the Pimms jelly with lemon ice-cream (*not* sorbet) which was out of this world.

Osmotherly is a lovely village anyway but staying somewhere as nice as this, just a short diversion off our C2C walk, was the icing on the cake. It's not in the Stedman C2C book but maybe it wasn't open in this form when that was published. So get your Osmotherly info from TripAdvisor and book yourself into the Golden Lion - it really was an absolute treat to stay there.

We booked to stay here as my husband runs in a ultra race that is held in Osmotherly every year.

The room was stayed in was lovely and we had our own separate door to come and go as we pleased. The shower was fantastic and one of the best I've ever had.

The food - well there isn't a lot I can apart from it was very good. Typical northern size of portions and well cooked. I particularly enjoyed my morning porridge.

The host was welcoming and was genuinely interested in us as people. He made us feel very welcome and he staff were very attentive.

Overall we had a fab time at the Golden Lion and would recommend it to anyone.

We stayed three nights at the Golden Lion in late September 2013 for a driving weekend of the North Yorks Moors and Yorkshire Dales. Everything about the Golden Lion was exemplary: the welcome, the rooms, the beers, the food, even the parking. If others did things as well as the team at the Golden Lion, they would have some very stiff competition; but as it is, no-one does, so they don't! Plus the location is perfect, in between the North Yorks Moors and the Dales. For walkers, walking starts straight from the (picturesque, well-kept) village. Perfect.

Room Tip: They're all beautiful

All of the pubs we ate or stayed at on the Coast to Coast were great in a ‘pub grub’ kind of way, but the Golden Lion was on a whole other plain. It simply got all the core details (food, drinks, atmosphere, music, lighting, service) exceptionally right. The lighting (candles on all the tables & fun fairy lights strung across the bar) created a warm, rosy glow; the music was well chosen old time jazz (Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald) – comforting to listen to & not intrusive or abusive; interesting local brews & tempting drinks list; effectively efficient & polite service; and last but not least, seriously delectable food.

We decided to up our lunch game a bit as the menu was too good. For a starter, we opted for the Bresaola, Rocket & Shaved Parmesan salad (£5.95) - exquisite. I opted for an all time fave – Duck Confit on Colcannon Mash in a Tarragon Cream Sauce (£15.95). Perfecto combo of flavours and textures & accompanied by wonderful selection of steamed veggies.

And my partner also took direct aim for one of her faves – Chicken (Free Range!) Kiev (£13.95). The dish got 2 big thumbs up & lots of hhhhmmmmmm’s.

All was pleasingly washed down with the aid of some local ales…so if you ever happen to be doing the Coast to Coast or find yourself within striking distance of Osmotherley, do yourself a huge food favour and get thee to the Golden Lion!

The Golden Lion in Osmortherley is unassuming from the outside, and sits next to the "Boot and Coffee Shop", but inside it is warm and cozy. Our room was large and seemed to be recently redecorated. It opened onto a patio built into the hill behind the inn. The shower was the best I have ever encountered. The food and service at dinner and breakfast were excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room opening on the outdoor patio.
