“Perfect choice for dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013 via mobile

Another lovely evening at this lovely pub. Even on a Monday evening the place was busy with a mixture of locals, walkers, romantic couples and people celebrating special occasions. A great mix! We arrived without having booked and were greeted warmly and given a table straight away. The pub had a lovely atmosphere, it felt cosy and homely with candles on the tables. I ordered the Lamb Shank frOm the specials board and my husband had the Sirloin Steak, both were perfectly cooked and delicious. Next came Bread and Butter Pudding and Pimms Jelly with Strawberry and Mint Compote- again absolutely delicious! Can't wait to return.

This place is fantastic. Spotlessly clean, fantastic attentive and personal service, gorgeous food, beautiful view. Location is ideal for walkers. Will be returning very soon. The staff are lovely, and it is well worth staying for tea if you are just passing through.

A friend, who did the C2C last year told me not to miss a meal here. I convinced my walking companions we needed to try it and was a little nervous about it. BUT it was an amazing meal at an amazing price. All meals were just wonderful. They were well prepared by a chef who knows about honest and creative food preparation. It was also a pleasing wine list. The service was efficient, warm and friendly. Go out of your way to eat here. You won't be disappointed.

Stopped here for one night on a C2C bike ride (Sat 13th July'13). All the B&B's we stayed in were very good but what a great surprise this was. Great 'pub', lovely rooms, excellent food, great host. Bit of a treat for the night before our last day cycling.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Golden Lion on the Coast to Coast walk. The double ensuite room was very comfortable, clean and quiet all night, even with the extra noise from the bar. The shower room was fantastic and the bed equivalent to the best hotels. The food was of a very high standard and we really enjoyed our evening meal and breakfast. We recommend the Golden Lion as it definitely stands out from all the other pubs on the Coast to Coast route.

As 2 coast to coast walkers we have stayed at some very nice places, but the Golden Lion beats them all. We were in room 5 downstairs, which initially I was concerned because it was close to the toilets, but I should not have been, sound did not travel and we were isolated. Beautiful king size bed that was so comfortable, and I never wanted to leave the shower... A massive newly tiled room with a great shower head, amazing water pressure and heat. The pub was closed when we arrived so we went across the street. When I saw the doors open to the pub , we came back and never left. Christie (? Sp) was a great host. The whiskey selection could keep you here for weeks. The local pub atmosphere made it more welcoming. Food.... Wow... Mussels, brie, chicken, cheese, chocolate cake. Everyone had a great sense of humour. Highly recommend. This location is not in Stedman's c2c book which is a pity because it is an absolute gem.. Nicola/Jason

Arrived here from Danby Wiske for a one night stay on the Coast to Coast walk.
We received a warm welcome and enjoyed a few pints of Deacon ale in the bar.
We had booked a twin room, ensuite which was very comfortable and clean. The ensuite was a very large wet room, great after a long day walking.
We enjoyed a fantastic evening meal here, the food was excellent along with the service.

Breakfast was excellent, with a varied menu.
We would highly recommend this place and would certainly stay again.
