We have been going to eat here for years and the standard is always excellent. Along with the thriving tables it is a real village pub. The food is of a high standard, well above 'pub grub' but not trying to earn a Michelin star, but it is often very busy so do book ahead!

I have been to the Golden Lion many times and my husband and I decided to book a table for 2 last minute on a Saturday night. We were informed that we could have a table at 8.45pm.

We arrived on the dot, but unfortunately we weren't seated until 9.25pm. If we had been informed that we may have had to wait when booking we wouldn't have minded but nothing was mentioned of it. To make it worse, the girl behind the bar did not seem very impressed when we asked her to chase up our table.

Once we were seated, The Golden Lion was as delicious as always. The food was good; large portions of high quality ingredients kept simple following the pub's standard theme. The main course did arrive a little quickly after the starter which was a shame...people don't always want to eat super fast!

The puddings were out of this world; Christian, the owner, was also very helpful advising my husband of a pudding he might like that would be suitable for his gluten free diet.

We will back and know that it will be just as good next time. We'll just make sure we ask for more time between courses and ensure that we book an earlier table so we get seated when we're supposed to!

The Golden Lion is worth a trip from London by itself - yet alone being on the beautiful C2C walk.
I slept in a comfortable, tastefully decorated contemporary room on the ground flloor, calm decor and beautiful carpentry with a huge en-suite shower wet room and a high pressure hot steamy shower. What more could you ask for after a long day's walk except for a pint of beer on arrival and a tasty dinner of fresh market food with a decent selection of wine? All that is provided along with an imaginative breakfast menu. I will return.

Stayed here for one night on the Coast to Coast
We arrived early in Osmotherley after a short section from Danby Wiske and found that the Golden Lion did not open at lunch time on a Monday and Tuesday (it was a Tuesday !!), so we grabbed a drink in the pub opposite and viewed what appeared to be a rather featureless pub from the outside.
We popped into the village shop and they said to go round to the back of the pub and there we found some staff and were quickly shown to our room. WOW!! - what a surprise - a large, recently refurbished room, with very clean and contemporary features (stunning bathroom with walk in 'wet room' style shower, large comfy bed etc etc). All the rooms are in an old extension at the back of the pub so there is no noise from the bar.
We ate in the pub (along with several other coast to coasters and a lot of locals) and what a treat, wonderful food and very good value
One word of warning - Mt Grace Priory is closed on a Tuesday & Wednesday, so don't be tempted to walk the 1.5 miles down to it and all the way back up to Osmotherley!!
All this in the wonderful village of Osmotherley, 3 pubs, local shop, a tea room and a fish and chip shop - what else could a coast to coast walker ask for? Perfect.

I've been returning to the Golden Lion for over ten years, and always the food is amazing and the service is exceptional. The Ambience is very relaxing, so we were delighted to stay the night in one of the beautiful contemporary rooms. With a pristine walk in bathroom and imaginative touches of French chic at the Golden Lion. Breakfast was served by Christie, nothing was too much trouble, chilled fresh orange, home made bread toasted, French Butter a fantastic English breakfast and Italian coffee. With views down the beautiful village and plenty of walking from the doorstep a stay at the Golden Lion was truly wonderful.

Like most of the reviewers, we were walking the Coast to Coast and couldn't have asked for a better place to rest our legs and refresh the rest. The rooms are outstanding by any standards: well above what one might expect from a country pub. Good range of beers, an excellent breakfast and friendly staff who couldn't have done more to make us welcome.

We booked the Golden Lion in Osmotherley as we found some great walks in the area and needed some where to stay. When we arrived in the village on the saturday morning we drove past the pub without seeing it. The pub it self does not have a car park so had to park about half a mile away as the village was so busy with walkers. The pub is set around the village green along with two other pubs a real nice setting. After we completed our walk in the countryside around Osmotherley we noticed a parking spot right outside the pub so i rushed to the car and got parked in front of the pub, and we sat outside and had a couple of well earned beers then checked in. The rooms are nice and light with a great big walk in shower. We booked a table for dinner then had a couple of beers in the other two pubs in the village then returned to the golden Lion for our meal. The pub was packed with people eating and the meal was very nice as was the breakfast the next morning. When we checked out after breakfast the owner said he would email us some offers later on in the year when not as busy so we are looking forward to going back for a long weekend as could not fault the rooms, food, and area.
